The study of semantics
Introduction to semantics
Semantics is the study of the meaning, phrases and sentences. It is an attempt to focus on
what the words conventionally mean, rather than on what an individual speaker might want
them to mean on a particular occasion
Introduction to linguistics
Linguistics is the scientific study of language. The word language here means language in general, not
a
particular language.
Why scientific? Because Linguists study language systematically.
They apply the scientific method by making observations, testing
hypotheses, anddeveloping theories.
The relation between semantics
and linguistics
Linguistics is the scientific study of language. It has many branches and Semantics is
one of them. Semantics is the study of meaning, which is encompassed in language.
Semantics includes topics such as:
-synonyms – words with similar meanings, e.g. Detest and loathe
-antonyms – words with opposite meanings, e.g. Crispy and soggy
-word families – words with related meanings, e.g. Chair, table, bed, and sofa are all
furniture
-homophones – words with same pronunciation but different spellings and meanings,
e.g. Bear and bare
-homonyms – words with same pronunciation and spelling but different meanings,
e.g. Deck (of a ship, of cards, for playing music, to decorate.)
