After taking this course you will be able to:
1. Explain why building their own home is such a sense of pride for people.
2. Explain ways to use this understanding to be people to protect their homes from wood-destroying insects.
3. Demonstrate what a new-housing development looks like from raw land to finished homes being built.
4. Articulate the reasons why termite protection is especially important in new developments.
5. Convince the homeowner to protect their homes from termites now and in the future.
2. The Big Idea
• After taking this course you will be able to:
• Explain why building their own home is such a sense of pride for people.
• Explain ways to use this understanding to be people to protect their
homes from wood-destroying insects.
• Demonstrate what a new-housing development looks like from raw land
to finished homes being built.
• Articulate the reasons why termite protection is especially important in
new developments.
• Convince the homeowner to protect their homes from termites now and
in the future.
3. Pride of Building
Your Own Home
• People have a great sense of pride
when they build their own homes.
• The process is a long one with
several bumps in the road.
• The good part of that is they learn
quite a lot about the process.
• This not only heightens their sense
of pride but, also gives you
ammunition to sell to them based on
the entire building process.
• A general knowledge of the building
process is crucial for you to be
successful in convincing them to
protect their homes from termites.
4. Back to Raw Land
• To really understand the depth of
termite issues in new
developments, you have to go
back to the raw land stage.
• Before the house was built, most
are a mix of trees and/or
farmland.
• As you can imagine, those trees
all have roots that extended
below the ground.
• Of course, you know the trees
were removed but, where did
they go?
5. Predators of
Termites
• Before homes are built on a raw
piece of land termites have
several predators.
• Two of these main predators are
skunks and ants.
• The problem is when new homes
are built people have the skunks
trapped and removed. They also
start killing off all the ants.
• What you’re left with is an area
where termites ha e free run of
the land.
6. Bring in the
Bulldozers
• The first part of the land clearing
process is to bulldoze down all
the trees.
• I want you to picture all this wood
debris getting pushed up into
piles.
• Now, some of you have seen these
piles being burned as mass heaps.
• Stop and think for just a minute
how much if this wood debris just
gets pushed under the soil. What
about the tree’s underground root
systems?
7. • You see at this point a termite buffet
has been started.
• You have a ton of dying and decaying
tree parts and roots under the soil.
• This not to mention all the scrap
lumber, empty boxes and beer cases the
construction crew will bury under the
soil. (Not that anyone would ever
believe construction guys would drink
on site.

9. Built on a Termite
Colony
• As this picture depicts, your new
home has now been built on a
termite colony.
• Just imagine the longer those roots
rot in the soil the happier the
termites are.
• Over a period of time, the termites
will finish off those roots and work
their way up into your house.
• This happens very quickly when they
swarm and branch out new colonies.
• Of course they are always foraging
looking for new wood to consume
anyway.
10. • To compound the issues almost every
new home has mulch installed.
• This again lays out even more of a
buffet for the termites.
• Oh but there’s more, then they’ve also
added a sprinkler system that
constantly keeps the soil wet.
• We may as well give the termites a
“Come on in sign.”

11. What About my Pretreatment
• You will definitely hear people tell you about pretreatment done
on their homes.
• Those pretreats don’t compare to a full-liquid Termidor termite
treatment.
• Also, those treatments are only good for one year and they will
need on-going termite protection.
12. The Logical Conclusion
• At this point the only logical conclusion is to protect your home
from termites.
• All the conditions are ripe for termites to enter and infest your
home.
• You’ve just a major investment into you future.
• Unfortunately, homeowner’s insurance doesn’t cover termite
damage.
• It is your responsibility to protect your home.
