Create a Compose file, package it in an image, and voilà! You now have an "app-in-a-box"! Not convinced yet? No worries! It took a while for me to be convinced too! In this session, we'll start off by diving into how Docker Application Packages actually works, which will help us understand the use cases. We'll see how dev environments can hook in to this app-in-a-box by replacing the service being worked on with a dev container. Then we'll move on to see how end-to-end functional tests are much easier to run. And, finally, we'll see how to maintain an "app-in-a-box" with the latest versions of each component in a CI/CD pipeline, allowing for a unique app-in-a-box for each feature branch under development. Lots of good material! And lots of live demos!

Federation is typically thought of as the only way to do multi-cluster operations, but that's not the case. I explore more secure and scalable methods for connecting clusters together. This is key to hybrid scenarios where you want two or more clusters set up in a consistent way, and then deploy an application in all regions or on all clouds. I will dive deep into sharing RBAC roles and resource limits, plus setting up the same namespaces with important default config like Pod Security Policies.

We’ll discuss how SRE principles can guide the design of more advanced and proactive Operator features.

Kubernetes: one cluster or many

When we think about establishing a Kubernetes capability for our organization, our instinct, or perhaps just habit, might lead us to stand up a single cluster that will then be a shared resource across numerous tenants. Kubernetes offers namespaces that are intended to carve up the capacity across different users or groups of users. And while this may work well in some scenarios, it does impose certain constraints and limitations on its use. For example, it is well understood that the multitenancy in Kubernetes is soft, meaning it does not guard against deliberately malicious attacks from one tenant to another. If instead, we align tenant boundaries to Kubernetes clusters, effectively creating many single tenant clusters we can not only avoid certain limitations but we gain some significant advantages. Add a control plane for managing these sets of clusters and we have a powerful solution built on decades of maturity in machine virtualization. In this session we will present both models, multi-tenant clusters and multi-clusters and study the tradeoffs of each.

MetLife has outlined the early stages of their journey at past DockerCons, but have now moved past the POC stage and are in the process of transforming our technology portfolio globally. We are driving change on multiple levels in many ways, and now we've created a long-term strategy outlining how we will reach our technology goals using containers. At MetLife, we realized that once a PoC is complete, incorporating an entire application portfolio can be challenging: Where do you focus for the largest benefit to the organization? How and what do I spend the savings on if I want to ensure maximum value? How should people & processes change to align to match our transformation goals? In this session you’ll hear more about how MetLife has built their strategy to go forward, and you’ll learn how Docker's strategic approach to containerization and transformation can be applied in your company, too. A proof of concept is a great way to see if your traditional applications are worth Dockerizing. However, getting that first application into production in an enterprise can pose many challenges, both technical and organizational. In this talk, I will take you through the journey starting with high-level decisions such as what applications and components to Dockerize and methodology, then move on to more detailed decisions such as what components to put in images, configuration management, and version control. I will also cover how this impacts the development pipeline and strategies for operationalizing and scaling out the application onboarding process.

What if we didn’t have to worry about all of that? In this session, I’ll be speaking about what kinds of open source projects and tools enable you to write a serverless function with superfast boot and response times and built-in resource optimization. Then, you’ll understand how these capabilities take you to advanced DevOps practices as well as business acceleration. Furthermore, developers can avoid the extra work of developing a function from scratch, optimizing the application, and deploying it to Kubernetes.

OpenStack, Containers, and Docker: The Future of Application Deployment Twenty years ago, developers built static applications on well-defined stacks that ran on proprietary, monolithic hardware. Developers today want freedom to build applications using their choice of services and stacks and, ideally, want to be able to run those applications on any available hardware. Of course, this raises questions about service interaction, the practicality of migrating applications across environments, and the challenges of managing unlimited combinations of services and hardware environment. By promoting an opensource approach to flexible and inter-operable infrastructure, OpenStack goes a long way towards achieving this vision of the future. This talk discusses the application and platform side of the equation, and the interplay between OpenStack, Container technology (e.g. LXC), and the opensource Docker.io project. Docker.io enables any application and its dependencies to be deployed as lightweight containers that run consistently virtually anywhere. The same containerized application that runs on a developer's laptop can run consistently on a bare metal server, an OpenStack cluster, a Rackspace cloud, a VM,etc. While providing isolation and compatibility, containers have significant size, performance, and deployment advantages over traditional VMs. Recently, the community created an integration between Docker and OpenStack Nova, opening up exciting possibilities for web scale application deployment, continuous integration and deployment, private PaaS, and hybrid cloud. This session will give an introduction to Docker and containers in the context of OpenStack, and will then demonstrate cross-environment deployment of applications.

This session compares and contrasts various Docker orchestration systems (Swarm, Machine, and Compose), the batteries included with Docker itself, Mesos, Kubernetes, CoreOS/Fleet, Deis, Cloud Foundry, and Tutum. It includes a demo of how to deploy a Java 8 app with MongoDB on several of these systems.
