1. INT. POLICE INTERVIEW ROOM. 24
Frampton and Hickock are interviewing Noel. With his
solicitor sat next to him, Noel slouches wearing a sneering
smile like a shield.
DI FRAMPTON
Tell me about Mr Attwell.
NOEL
Who?
DS HICKOCK
Leonard Attwell. The old man you
and your mates murdered in the
pedestrian walkway.
NOEL
I don’t know what your talking
about.
25 INT. POLICE INTERVIEW ROOM. 25
Carl Hughes is now in the interview seat. Brawny in build,
Carl is tough and capable, with a hard glint in his eye.
DS HICKOCK
Killing a pensioner. That must
have been hard work for you?
Carl kisses his teeth with disrespect and says nothing.
26 INT. POLICE INTERVIEW ROOM. 26
Mark Hathaway, known as Marky is next in the interview
room. Marky appears to be very much the weakest. One
senses that without the protection of the others, his tough
guy persona would dissolve and be less on show. He is the
only one who glints with any signs of fear.
DI FRAMPTON
(Her voice low,
sympathetic)
I know your scared, Mark, but I
can’t help you if you don’t tell
me the truth.
MARKY
(Trying hard to put on a
front)
I ain’t scared. What truth? I
don’t know nothing.
27 INT. POLICE INTERVIEW ROOM. 27
Dean Saunders, the scrawny junkie in the filthy tracksuit,
who Harry and Leonard witnessed scoring heroin, is taking
his turn being interviewed.
Despite the ravages of drugs, Dean has probably seen more
jail cells than any of them put together. In prison or
out, it makes no difference to Dean, as long as he can get
high.
DI FRAMPTON
Dean!
Dean’s half-closed eyes open.
DS HICKOCK
2. (With emphasis)
Dean, look at me. You spend half
your life in that pedestrian
subway, scoring or shooting up.
What happened?
DEAN
No comment.
Dean looks white, withdrawn and sweats profusely.
DS HICKOCK
You don’t look too clever there,
Deano.
Dean just shakes his head.
DI FRAMPTON
If you help us understand what
happened, I can get you into
rehab and then maybe you can get
your life back.
DS HICKOCK
It’s better than prison.
DEAN
No comment.
DI FRAMPTON
No comment. Is that all you can
say?
Dean mumbles something, his eyes slide closed as if he’s
fallen asleep again.
DI FRAMPTON
(Slaps her hand on the
desk)
Dean!
Dean’s eyes snap wide to attention.
DEAN
No comment.
28 INT. POLICE INTERVIEW ROOM. 28
Carl is laughing it all off.
CARL
Yeah, no comment. It’s like a
catch phrase, isn’t it!
DI FRAMPTON
(With an authoritative
manner)
I’m glad your taking it so
lightly, Carl. Considering
you’ve got a list of convictions
for violence, aggravated assault,
wounding with intent and
possession of a deadly weapon.
Carl leans in to Frampton and matches her serious tone.
CARL
That’s the way it goes. These
days you need protection on the
3. street.
CARL(cont'd)
When my little brother got
himself cut up, where the fuck
were you lot? Shining your
fucking shoes?
(Once again he kisses
his teeth in
disrespect)
Maybe if he was carrying, he’d
still be alive. Someone comes at
you with a weapon, you better be
prepared to defend yourself,
otherwise you're fucking dead.
DI FRAMPTON
(Her manner now
understanding)
Is that how it happened, Carl.
You were just defending yourself?
CARL
No comment.
29 INT. POLICE INTERVIEW ROOM. 29
Marky fidgets in his chair.
DS HICKOCK
(There is a dark force
to his voice)
Did it feel good to stick it to
the old man?
MARKY
I don’t know what you’re talking
about!
DS HICKOCK
(Leans in)
I bet it did. I bet it made you
feel powerful.
(Emphasising the phrase)
Sticking it to someone else.
Because you’ve had it stuck into
you all your life!
Marky looks over at Frampton’s cool presence at the other
side of the desk.
MARKY
What the fuck is he talking
about?
DI FRAMPTON
I have a report from social
services that tells me you’ve
been in and out of foster care
since you were six years old and
you’ve made some serious
allegations of sexual abuse.
4. Angrily Marky stands up.
MARKY
(Exploding)
That’s all bollocks, man. I just
made it all up, you know what am
saying. No one ever messed with
me like that.
DS HICKOCK
(Firm)
Sit down!
Marky considers for a moment and then slides back into his
seat.
30 INT. POLICE INTERVIEW ROOM. 30
Noel sits in the chair, cool and indifferent. Frampton and
Hickock are trying to find an angle.
DI FRAMPTON
You’re looking at a life
sentence. Is prison really what
you want, Noel?
DS HICKOCK
Yeah, Just like your dad. He’s
doing life for murder, isn't he?
NOEL
My dad was the fucking king of
this estate.
DS HICKOCK
So he thought. What is he now?
King of the bunk bed.
NOEL
Fuck off, you used to shit
yourselfwhen ever you came up
against my old fella. The last
time it took six of you cunts to
put him in the back of the van.
(His face twists into a
grin as he leans in
close, eyes burning
with intensity)
NOEL(cont'd)
Now I know my rights! This is
harassment. You want to charge
me with something, go ahead.
Otherwise, you’ve got to let me
go.
Noel flops back in his seat, arms folded. His face is a
mask of white hot hate and silence.
