Any aggrieved person or protection officer can apply to the magistrate for relief under the act. The magistrate must consider the domestic incident report before making a decision and can order compensation to be paid. They must also schedule a hearing within 3 days and dispose of the application within 60 days of the first hearing. The magistrate provides notice of the hearing to the protection officer, who ensures the respondent is served within 2 days. The magistrate may direct the respondent and aggrieved person to undergo single or joint counseling with a service provider member and will schedule the next hearing within 2 months of the counseling date.
