Any aggrieved person or protection officer can apply to the magistrate for relief under the act. The magistrate must consider the domestic incident report before making a decision and can order compensation to be paid. They must also schedule a hearing within 3 days and dispose of the application within 60 days of the first hearing. The magistrate provides notice of the hearing to the protection officer, who ensures the respondent is served within 2 days. The magistrate may direct the respondent and aggrieved person to undergo single or joint counseling with a service provider member and will schedule the next hearing within 2 months of the counseling date.

Section 12 – Any/aggrieved person/P.O can make an application to the Magistrate for
seeking relief under the Act; The magistrate shall consider the DIR before passing any
The magistrate can issue an order of payment of compensation; The magistrate can also fix
date of hearing within 3 days of receipt of application and dispose the application within 60
days of 1st hearing.
Section 13 - The Magistrate will give the notice of hearing to the P.O who will ensure that
the notice is served by the respondent within 2 days of the receipt of the notice
Section 14 – The Magistrate can direct the respondent/aggrieved person for single/joint
counselling with any member of the service provider; After issuing this direction, the
magistrate shall fix the next date of hearing within 2 months of the date of counselling
