Secrets of the dead handel
1. Secrets of the Dead“Death at Jamestown” By Jordan Handel History 140 4/20/10
2. Conflict In Jamestown Most common theory was that the settlers died from starvation but archeological evidence displays that that might not have been the case and disease might have been at fault. Illness hit the settlers camps hard, and 440 people lost their lives, the legendary john Smith was one of the ones who survived. However starvation did play a role in the harshness of life for the settlers and cause many deaths in the starving years of 1609 & 1610, as was scene through written documents during that time.
3. Conflict In Jamestown The settlers came to the new world expecting to be able to trade the natives for food, but once they arrived the natives were very hostile and didn’t care for much trading with them and the few times they did the natives didn’t have much to give them because they themselves were going through a famine as well. The starvation and thirst could have been the cause of many diseases that went around from being forced to drink the dirty river water. Arsenic poisoning, was then seen to be the thing that was very likely to have caused most of the deaths. After putting together all of the symptoms that were documented it matched the direct effects on humans that arsenic poisoning causes.
