Essay about Small Change
Small Change What determines a movement? Malcolm Gladwell defines what pushes a
movement to make a difference. He analyzes the concept of strong ties and weak ties and how
these relationships affect an individual s willpower and determination to help a cause. Gregory
Orr puts these ideas into context in his memoir, Return to Hayneville , in which he recounts his
experience and involvement in the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Malcolm Gladwell s Small
Change: Why the Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted , focuses, in particular, on the civil rights
movement concentrates to the lunch counter sit ins in Greensboro, North Carolina. Gladwell s
ideas and opinions of social and political emancipations are given a real world setting, as... Show

Orr s experience helped him learn about himself and primarily helps an individual discover the
importance of living. Gladwell would classify Orr as someone who shared no relationship with
the cause and only joined because because he wanted to find himself in the midst of chaos not
necessarily because he was passionate about the civil rights movement. Gladwell describes the
movement of sit ins across the south as a fever . Orr found himself caught up in the contagion,
he endured the beatings and the injustice the same as everyone else but his motives were not set
for civil rights, he realized this when he was taken and held captive, Even as I sank into
depression and brooded in the stifling heat of that jail barn, I was learning that I wanted to live,
(Orr, 223). When he was released Orr left without alerting the COFO office because he felt
ashamed. It was easy for him to walk away from the cause for him to walk away from the cause
because he as he left he wasn t leaving anything or anyone behind. Gladwell s explains that weak
ties seldom lead to high risk activism (Gladwell, 137). In Gregory Orr s essay, Return to
Hayneville , published by The Virginia Quarterly Review, Orr revisited the place of his abduction
by armed vigilantes in Alabama as a Civil Rights worker in 1965. Even though the events of this
essay take place in 1965, for Orr it started with the death of his younger brother in a hunting
accident when Orr was

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Pit Mining
Extraction:
Mining involves digging, blasting, hauling rock, exploring, extracting and refining.
It is a high tech industry.
There are three ways minerals are mined,
I.Open pit mining
Referred as a surface mining technique of extracting rock or minerals from the Earth.
It is used when deposits of commercially useful minerals or rocks are found near the surface.
Metal ores (unpurified metal) are extracted through open pit mining if they are near the surface.
In open pit mining overburden is removed.
Holes are drilled 10 to 15 meters deep and filled with explosives. The rock is blasted apart.
Ore is loaded into large trucks (which may carry 90 to 250 tonnes) by huge shovels.
Quarries are open pit mines that produce building ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Effect on the Environment:
Sometimes there is low forest degradation and sometime sudden and catastrophic clear cutting for
mining.
Deforestation affects the amount of water in soil and moisture in atmosphere.
When there are no trees to keep soil in place, there are more chances of soil erosion.
Heavy rainfall washes soil into rivers.
Essential nutrients are washed out of the soil which results in insufficient growth of new plants.
Deforestation also contributes to decreased transpiration, which lessens cloud formation. This
ultimately reduces the sources of rain.
Forests extract CO2 and pollutants from the air, thus contributing to biosphere sustainability.
When mining happens a lot of waste is dumped which pollutes the land that decreases sustainability.
Mining involves the use of explosives in a large amount and drilling, when explosives are used a
lot of harmful chemicals such as NO2, CO2 and sulphur are released in to the atmosphere which
increases global warming.
Sulphide chemical is the result of acid rain.
Coal is used as a source of energy when mining, when coal is burnt it releases coal ashes in to the
atmosphere that contain heavy chemicals such as mercury, arsenic and

Transferal of Guilt in Maus
The books Maus I and Maus II are biographical comic books written and illustrated by Art
Spiegelman. In these books Spiegelman tells his father s story of survival through the horrors of
the Holocaust. Spiegelman simultaneously presents an inner story of the conflict between him and
his father, Vladek Spiegelman as both he and his father try to come to terms with the past, and
work to have a normal life. This feelings of tension and conflict suffered by Vladek and Art in Maus
I and II is caused by a transitional and rebounding feeling of survivor s guilt caused by Vladek s
passing down of his own guilt, Art s guilt of neglect, and Art s attempts to come to terms with his
own guilt of survival. Art and his father Vladek have a rocky... Show more content on

(pg. 39, The Perversion of Loss) He feels guilty about having been born after the Holocaust, and
that his parents had to live through it, while his life has been easy. This strains Art and pushes
him further away from his father, when he asks himself which of his parents he would save
from a concentration camp he tends to pick his mother. This guilt is visible when Art is talking
to his wife and tells her that he somehow wishes he could have be in Auschwitz with his parents,
so he could really know what they lived through. Art also feels guilt for being born after his
older brother Richieu, whom he describes as his Ghost Brother . Part of the tension between Art
and his parents is caused by the invisible presence of Richieu, who Art believes his parents held
him in comparison to constantly. Art creates his own sibling rivalry with his brother s picture,
seeing himself in a way as an unsuccessful replacement for Richieu. This causes Art to continue to
rebel against his parents, and coupled with his conflicts with Vladek, definitely influence the path
in life that he chooses. Starting in Maus II, Art suffers from even more depression. It has now
been four years since the publication of his first book. Even though his book is successful, Art
does not gain any happiness from it, and actually only feels more guilty. Now he feels as if he is

Essay on A Girl Named Paige
I walk through the doors to the fourth building, aiming towards the bathroom but instead,
continue to the hallway next to the library and sit across and diagonal from this girl who always
makes me curious with the way she looks, the way she acts. Everyday I see her, sitting alone. It s
only seven thirteen and I know her friends will join her soon; I stay sitting across from her.
Everyday, my curiosity grows. I see her all day and I know next to nothing about her. She sits alone
most of the time, an almost forlorn lookplastered to her face. Alone now, I know she sees me. Her
eyes dart up at me as I sit then return to their staring at a random splat on the floor, wall,
anywhere. Part of me wants to think she s just socially awkward and... Show more content on

They converse about fictional characters and how marvelous they are. Tired of this
conversation, I decide to venture elsewhere, although I intend to keep an eye on Paige in first
hour. During first hour, Paige is just as vivacious, even more so than earlier. I notice then how
small she is. Slim, but not puny, and somewhat tall is her body stature. She s just small enough
to be swallowed by any crowd. The dark clothes make her shrink into herself. The incessant
hoodies she wears contribute to absorbing her. I suppose it reflects her personality, always drawn
in, like a tortoise in a shell. I wonder how her friend, Courtney, is friends with her. They seem
polar opposites. Courtney looks outgoing, confident. As I look at Paige, I can tell she isn t. I can
see her low self esteem in the way she slouches and the dullness in her eyes when she s
contemplating. On one hand, I feel sympathetic for her. It s as if life for her is so gruesome. On
the other hand, however, her demeanor is disgusting. Low self esteem is the least attractive
quality in others. She seems comfortable, so why is it she always seems so sorrowfully somber?
I shake my head and stand as the bell rings, heading to second hour. On our way to second hour, I
walk behind Paige. Once she steps outside the classroom her face instantly takes on that
disheartening expression. I wonder silently, is her life really that poisonous? Does she return home
and act this way? I

An Analysis of the Falling Ladder Problem
Introduction This investigation which I carried out is closely related to statistics, where its main
objective is to help us understand how a large amount of data is analysed and tabulated with the
help of sampling and estimation, as well as its application in real life. In this investigation, we were
instructed to analyse the census data tabulated from the respondents, where they input the data
through a survey form available online. The respondents consist of students who are taking South
Australian Matriculation course at Taylor s College Subang Jaya. We were to carry out a series of
analysis regarding the variables derived from the census data, and interpret the results obtained with
the application of statistics knowledge.

Persuasive Essay On Henrietta Lacks
Have you ever wondered what scientists use to test diseases on? Scientists use the immortal cells of
cancer victim Henrietta Lacks to test various diseases and infections. Science, a never ending quest
of destruction and salvation, throughout history many historical figures such as Henrietta Lacks,
Douglas Mawson, and Phineas Gagehave sacrificed much to feed it s endless hunger. Science is
like a great and powerful king that shall never be slain, it forever saves it s people but at the
same time causing destruction among the enemy. Henrietta Lacks has had greater adversities in
the course of contributions to science (feeding the beast) over Douglas Mawson, and Phineas
Gage. The cliche phrase Heroes never die proves true for Henrietta Lacks, over Douglas
Mawson, and Phineas Gage. The story of Gage, Mawson, and Lacks are all interesting topics,
but the Lacks still faced the most adversity out of the three. Henrietta Lacks lost her life for
science, faced great pain during her life, and a slow mental deterioration from knowing with
almost all certainty that she would die. Meanwhile, Mawson led an arctic exploration, and
somehow survived with his life. Gage had a horrible accident and somehow fully recovered from
it. Lacks faced the most adversity due to some quite unethical actions from people around her and
from nature itself, sometimes life just does not work out and that was true in Lack s case. The most
important fact that Lacks faced the most adversity over

Sustainable Tourism
Sustainable Tourism I. Introduction Sustainable tourism is stated to be tourism development that
avoids damage to the environment, economy and cultures of the locations where it takes place. The
aim of sustainable tourism is to ensure that development is a positive experience for local people;
tourism companies; and tourists themselves. (The London School of Economics and Political
Science, 2012) The tourism industry is such that produces significant impacts on natural resources,
consumption patterns, pollution and social systems. (The London School of Economics and
Political Science, 2012) The facts on tourism include that 980 million individuals travel
internationally (2011 data) and that number is estimated to reach 1.5 trillion by 2020. Travel and
tourism is representative of 10% of the total global Gross Domestic Product (GD), which is
inclusive of other related tourism businesses such as catering and cleaning. Finally, there are
approximately 25 million individuals across 52 countries that have been displaced by violence,
persecution and other disasters all of which affects tourism receipts in every country throughout the
world. (The London School of Economics and Political Science, 2012, paraphrased) Sustainable
tourism is stated to be about В¦re focusing and adapting. A balance must be found between limits
and usage so that continuous changing, monitoring and planning ensure that tourism can be
managed. This requires thinking long term (10, 20+ years) and

Taking a Look at Poliomyelitis
Polio which may also be called poliomyelitis is a viral disease that can be spread or transmitted
from individual to individual mainly through the fecal oral route. The word polio is of Greek
origin polios meaning grey and myelos meaning marrow which refers to the grey particle of the
spinal cord. It is noted that about 90% of polio infections are asymptomatic but affected patients
can show an amount of if the virus enters their blood circulation. In rare cases, the virus can enter
the central nervous system which could lead to the destruction of some motor neurons which
automatically causes muscle weakness and possible flaccid paralysis. Polio may occur in three
different forms: Spinal polio: this is the most commonly noted form of polio characterized by
paralysis most often involves the lower limbs (legs). Bulbar polio: this kind of polio could be
very severe and can lead to muscle weakness (muscles innervated by the cranial nerves).
Bulbospinal polio: this is the combination of spinal and bulbar paralysis. HISTORY Polio was
first discovered as a coition by Jakob Heine in 1840. The virus known to cause this disease or
infection is the POLIOVIRUS which was first noticed in 1908 by Karl Landsteiner. Major polio
epidemics started to appear in the late 19th century in Europe. Polio soon became one of the most
occurring childhood diseases in the 20th century. Proper hygiene and sanitation decreased the
prevalence of this disease in young children which are likely to

Australian Involvement In The Vietnam War
The Vietnam War was a Cold War era proxy war sparked in the 1950s between the capitalist
supported South Vietnam and the communist supported North Vietnamese. Marking history as the
world s first ever televised war, the Vietnam War was subject to widespread criticism and protest,
sparking a clear divide between the Australian population. The Vietnam War period and its political
fallout have left a staggeringly significant impact on both Australian foreign affairs and culture.
While there were a variety of factors leading the Australian population to the conflict, the main

For many years following the war, large numbers of Vietnam veterans had a sense that they
themselves were blamed for the war and the manner in which it was conducted, not the

upon their return to Australia. For men who regarded themselves as generally having fought
more humanely and professionally than their American counterparts, this was a harsh, bitter
blow. For mere men whom had lost friends in combat and viewed war atrocities through their

caused a divide between former veterans and newly arrived veterans from seeking comradeship and

An Analysis Of Pope Innocent IV
This source is an excerpt from a letter from Pope Innocent IV to King henry III of England on the
23rd January 1245, shortly after the sacking of Jerusalem by Khwarezmian forces in the same year.
When a Pope traditionally launches a crusade it is accompanied with excitatoria, formal letters
appealing to nobility and kings for contribution to the forthcoming campaign. Although this letter
was intended for the English king, Peter Jackson implies that the missing letter to King Louis IX
would have almost have been identical concerning its content, language and the overarching appeal
for the crusade to respond to the sacking of Jerusalem at the hands of the Khwarezmians.

He immediately found himself in a difficult position as pope, with numerous issues arising, such
as the hostility escalating between the Holy Roman Emperor and the papacy, the increase of
Islamic incursions into the Holy Land and of course the Mongol invasion of Europe. There was
indeed prior warning of the defensive vulnerability of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, as Pope
Innocent IV received a letter complaining that there were only one hundred pilgrim knights
defending the city, and more reinforcements from Western Europe was needed for protection.
Although this may have been note by the newly appointed Pope, the struggle with the Holy
Roman Emperor through the continuation of Pope Gregory IX s policy against Frederick II
may have overshadowed this plea from the Holy Land. In fact, Pope Innocent IV s position was
so untenable in Rome due to the Emperor s actions to increase dissent, that he fled to Lyon and
immediately set about organising the Council of Lyon for 1245. His letter to Henry III was part
of an effort from his base in Lyon to call for a crusade in reaction to the sacking of Jerusalem by
the Khwarezmians, but he struggled to garner much support for the crusade due to the internal
struggles within Europe, with only King Louis IX fully committed to the campaign. The
relationship between Pope Innocent IV and King Henry III is one of note, as since the ties
between Rome and the English King were established early through the papal support given to
Henry at the end of the Baron s war. The papacy desperately needed political allies due to the
increasing threat posed by the military might of the Holy Roman Emperor and Henry II could be
said to be one of them. Although the papacy could find respite through their relationship between
the King of France and King of England respectively, the relationship between the two kingdoms
was strenuous. A crusade

How Does Prufrock Show The Importance Of Time
T. S. Eliot s main purpose for writing The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock is to show the
importance of time. Prufrock, the main character and narrator of the story seems to think he has
plenty of time to sit around and wait forever to ask, whom we assume is someone he likes, an
overwhelming question (page 2524). Prufrock seems to be a big procrastinator, and uses the timehe
should be using to make excuses as to why he shouldn t rush since he has time later. Time for
you and time for me, And time yet for a hundred indecisions, And for a hundred visions and
revisions, Before the taking of a toast and tea (page 2525). In this quote Prufrock seems to stall
his question even more deciding that there is time to be indecisive before taking his toast and
tea. Prufrock s stalling and convincing of himself that there is more time, is exactly what makes
him not have time and grow old. Before we know it, Prufrock is an old man who now wonders
whether or not he should have used his time wisely when he was younger and would it have been
worth it, after all (page 2526). In the end, there is nothing he can do to get back the time he wasted
so he simply walks the beaches wondering whether the mermaids will come sing to him.

Reflection Of A Discourse Community
Introduction
Paul Ryan once said, Every successful individual knows that his or her achievement depends on a
community of persons working together. We do not often realize how important it is for everybody
to work together to achieve a goal. A community is a group of individual people gathered together
to form a whole, like a school, local church, government entity, non profit organization, sport team,
etc. This whole can make reference to a discourse community.
According to John Swales, discourse communities are unions where individuals have a common
purpose, and communicate to achieve this. There are six characteristics that make up a discourse
community. They are a set of common public goals, mechanisms of communication among its ...

Literature Review
In the article, The Concept of Discourse Community, John Swales defines what a discourse
community is, and yet, he strongly argues that a discourse community must meet six specific
characteristics. A social group must have a set of common goals, methods of intercommunication
between its members, feedback, the usage of genres, a determined lexis, and a rank that defines the
level of expertise each member has.
With that being said, Swales highlights the need of a clarification of what differs a discourse
community from a speech community. In Erik s Borg (2003) article, Discourse community , the
concept of a speech community refers to actual people who recognize their language use as
different from other language users. (p.398) Additionally, Swales states that discourse communities
recruits its members by persuasion, training, or relevant qualification and speech communities
recruits its [members] by birth, accident or adoption . Even though speech communities do share
similar linguistic rules among its members, norms, and theories, they do not share common a
common goal. They lack communication among its members, and lastly, they do not accomplish
the utilization of genres like a discourse community does.
Moreover, it is established that genres are how things get done, when language is used to
accomplish them (Martin, 1985). Swales (1990) indicates that discourse

Dark Side Leadership And How They Can Get Into Power
Dark side leadership creates problems for organisations and the individual, the most common
form of this being derailment. Smart (1999) estimated that the cost of a failed executive to be
$2.7 million. This essay is going to focus on what dark side leadership is and how they can get
into power when the consequences can be so great. The drawbacks of such research will be
discussed and alternative explanations explored. Before concluding that an inclusive approach must
be adopted.
The majority of research into how destructive leaders can get into power has focussed on the
individual themselves. Kenny and Zaccaro (1983) investigated leader emergence and found that 48
82% of the variance in leadership emergence was due to personality. The area of dark side
leadership lacks coherence around definitions and causations (Slattery, 2009). The majority of
this essay will focus on personality explaining dark side leadership emergence. Firstly, it is
important to look at leadership emergence with regards to dark side traits as proposed by Hogan
and Hogan (1997). Dark side traits are defined as traits that are undesirable, that are present in
excess and not traits in which they are lacking (Hogan Hogan, 2001). They identified 11
subclinical traits that can be present in dark side leaders, e.g. narcissism, by using the Hogan
Development Survey. They are termed subclinical because they are perceived to be less prominent
than clinical traits but still measure the degree to which a

Proposition 140 In California
Dating back to its admission into statehood, reform has been an undeniable element of California. It
could even be argued that many important landmarks in our state history were defined by acts of
reform, such as the implementation of direct democracy into its state constitution during the
progressive era of the late 19th and early 20th century. In modern California, it could be argued that
there has been no greater landmark than the passage of Proposition 140. In short, Proposition 140
was an initiated constitutional amendment that sought to reform several key aspects of its own
state legislature. One such reform limited the amount the of expenditures the legislature could spend
on staff. Another reform barred state legislaturesfrom earning... Show more content on

During the 1980s, the California legislature had built a reputation as one of the most professional
legislatures in the country and for good reason. For one, the legislature enjoyed relatively low
turnover rates between 1979 and 1989, with the assembly ranked in the 16th country and the
senate ranked 3rd (Petracca, pg.11). But, following implementation of Proposition 140, instability
was very pronounced in the in the first years particularly in the assembly. For the first 8 years after
the implementation of term limits, speakers of the assembly were generally inexperienced and
ineffective, lasting only for budgets and an election. It was not until the appointment of John A.
Perez in 2009, that the assembly began to stabilize Another aspect of instability and ineffectualness
of the assembly has been its committees. Due inexperience of assemblymen, the process of
identifying flawed legislation through gatekeeping has not been used as effectively as it has in the
past. Prior to term limits, the percentage of failed bills stood at around 36.3%. After term limits, it
was 23.3%. So, without experienced assemblymen, bad policy is more likely to go through

Grendel s Influence On The Role Of Christianity In Beowulf
In addition to the pagan beliefs, there are many Christian attributes that appear in the characters and
the plot. Beowulf, the main protagonist, is directly affected by the Christian God. God helps
Beowulf to have his physical appearance and he also helps him stay alive in the midst of danger.
First and foremost, let the Almighty Father be thanked for this sight...But now a man, with the Lord
s assistance, has accomplished something... (line 927 955). After Beowulfdefeats Grendel, Hrothgar
proclaims that God, the Almighty Father, brought Beowulf back to them. The Christian God and
not the pagan gods were the reason that Beowulf was allowed to live. This inclusion of the one
God removed fate from the story because God controls everyone, including Beowulf s, life.... Show

Grendel is the main antagonist in Beowulf, and he is described as Cain s descendent, ...he had
dwelt for a time in misery among the banished monsters, Cain s clan... (line 104 106). This
allusion to the biblical story of Cain and Abel brings a reference point to Grendel s evil. The evil of
Grendel is comparable to killing one s brother, like Cain did (Genesis 4 NIV). Another example of
Christianity is the use of the Christ figure archetype. Beowulf has many attributes of a Christ
figure, for example, he is self sacrificial and also has twelve disciples, ...and was now added as
the thirteenth to their number (line 2407). Christ figures are described as having those two
attributes and Beowulf is heavily influenced by his sacrificial attribute where he places his own
life above his people (Foster 119 120). Christ figures are a huge part of Christianity because
Christian leaders are believed to be Christ figures and Beowulf is described as one. Overall, the
Christian attributes in Beowulf, help to make the story more civilized and tame than the original

Two U.S. Vacation Hot Spots Essay
In all of my travels across the United States of America, the `hottest vacation spot hands down is
in Key West, Florida and the `coolest place to travel to is Denali National Park in Denali, Alaska.
These vacation destinations are the two most beautiful and most relaxing places in the nation! I
personally have experienced a week of enjoyment at both locations and find myself wanting to go
back to each of them in the future because I had such a great time. Even though these are both
awesome places to spend a week of vacation time, they differ in weatherand climatepatterns, they
each have unique attractions and activities to do, and both vary in travel costs and various other
expenses.

Since both vacation spots have different climates, they both offer a variety of different activities to
do and adventures to have. In Key West, vacationers are literally surrounded by water and have
numerous water activities to partake in like deep sea fishing, boating, swimming, snorkeling, scuba
diving, jet skiing, going to the beach, etc. I would suggest packing your travel bags full of shorts,
tee shirts, water apparel, and extra sunscreen! In the arctic area of Alaska, recreational activities
include biking, climbing, camping, fishing, hiking, winter sports, scenic driving, wildlife viewing,
and visiting various exhibits. Your travel bags for Denali National Park should consist of warm,
water resistant clothing, hiking equipment, camping equipment, and nutritional and energizing
camping food.
One of the most important issues about traveling and vacations is the cost and the overall
expense of the trip. From Allentown, Pennsylvania, a round trip ticket for a week to Key West,
Florida is going to cost between four hundred and five hundred dollars, including a rental car and
gas. However, a round trip ticket for a week to Anchorage, Alaska, and also gas and a rental car
to drive four hours north to Denali, is going to be slightly more expensive. It is going to cost
between six hundred and nine hundred dollars to travel. These costs do not even cover food,
hotels, or shelter you are going to stay in. There will also be numerous activity costs like boating,
fishing

Fire And Post Fire Management
Introduction
In 2005, Pomeroy, Washington experienced a storm with multiple lightning strikes causing
ignitions that started a large scale fire. This was designated as the School Fire Complex the
location of our study (Figure 1). The fire burned for fourteen days, consuming 21,000 hectares of
land, including 87 buildings and 56% of the Umatilla National Forest Land. Almost half the
federally owned land had been previously thinned for fire management (MODIS 2005). During
the 2015 Fire Ecology and Management class (FOR 326) field trip to the School Fire Complex, the
class surveyed a series of sites in order to create a research project to obtain a better understanding
of fire and post fire management. The goal of this research is to ... Show more content on

Both hypothesizes can be combined to one; that if an area is high severity, high pre fire density, and
logged (HHL) it will have a higher density than the high severity, low pre fire density, and logged
(HLL).
Methods
The lands that burned during this fire were mainly comprised of a mixed conifer forest. The main
tree species found before and after the fire are Douglas fir, grand fir, Pinus ponderosa (ponderosa
pine; PIPO), and Pinus contorta (lodgepole pine; PICO). Other species found include other
varieties of spruce, pine, and larch. In some areas of the site a rich understory has formed or still
exists; these were dominated by Salix scouleriana (Scouler s willow; SASC) with a limited
variety of forbs present beneath the shrubs. Post fire management tactics included salvage logging
and grass seeding. This seeding of native grasses was spread across burned areas in combination
with mulch in the form of agriculture straw as well as shredded wood strips (Robichaud, 2009).
In order to collect data, protocol was followed as described in by P. Morgan and P. Higueraa s
(YEAR)School Fire Field Trip Handout and Assignment packet. In September 2015 the FOR 326
class from University of Idaho followed this protocol to find and collect data from 32 sites on two

Essay On State Legislatures
Legislatures Today and Vermont State House
Visiting the Vermont State House seems to be an exercise in finding order in chaos. What I am
sure is the methodical adherence to a complicated set of rules seems to an outsider like me to be
madness. The following are a few observations of what I saw in relation to Squire and Moncrief s
book State Legislatures Today.
First, Squire and Moncrief note that in 2014 Vermont s legislaturewas at least one third women,
which was higher than the national average.1 In the Senate committee on Health and Welfare
there was only one male senator, Senator McCormack, and four women. This might be what
Professor Nelson refers to in class as a token role for women an area in the government where
women are considered competent and unlikely to cause trouble. The committee is an important
one, however, and the amount of women on it shows the trend towards gender inclusivity in places
of power. Still, there was only one Black man in the Health and Welfare committee room for the
duration of the two reports; he was a staffer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

keep on schedule, though they were behind by ten in the morning. Overall there was a relaxed
atmosphere. It seemed like there was always a group of people talking loudly by the signs saying
to keep quiet. Senator Cummings spent the morning knitting while she listened to the reports.
Though I cannot compare the atmosphere to how it feels to be in, for example, the California State
House, I would guess that Vermont was relaxed partly because it is not as

Pricing Policy
Q2
PRICING POLICY
Pricing policy refers to how a company sets the prices of its products and services based on costs,
value, demand, and competition. Managers should start setting prices during the development stage
as part of strategic pricing to avoid launching products or services that cannot sustain profitable
prices in the market. This approach to pricing enables companies to either fit costs to prices or
scrap products or services that cannot be generated cost effectively. Through systematic pricing
policies and strategies, companies can reap greater profits and increase or defend their market
shares.
FACTORS INVOLVED IN PRICING POLICY
The pricing of the product involves consideration of the following factors: (i) Cost Data in ... Show

(iv) Competition Factor in Pricing:
Market situation plays an effective role in pricing. Pricing policy has some managerial discretion
where there is a considerable degree of imperfection in competition. In perfect competition, the
individual producers have no discretion in pricing. They have to accept the price fixed by demand
and supply.
In monopoly, the producer fixes a high price for his product. In other market situations like
oligopoly and monopolistic competition, the individual producers take the prices of the rival
products in determining their price. If the primary determinant of price changes in the competitive
condition is the market place, the pricing policy can least be categorized as competition based
pricing.
(v) Profit Factor in Pricing:
In fixing the price for products, the producers consider mainly the profit aspect. Each producer
has his aim of profit maximization. If the objective is profit maximization, the critical rule is to
select the price at which MR = MC. Generally, the pricing policy is based on the goal of obtaining
a reasonable profit. Most of the businessmen want to hold the price at constant level. They do not
desire frequent price fluctuation. (vi) Government Policy in Pricing:
In market economy, the government generally does not interfere in the economic decisions of the
economy. It is only in planned economies, the government s interference is very much. According to

The Importance Of Secret Identity Or Stolen Identity
Secret Identity or Stolen Identity
How many, in this group has a computer, phone, and/or a tablet? How many have a mobile
internet connection, or a local internet connection available for you to use? If you said yes to
any of those, then it is likely you have an email address, you have given your home address on a
website, entered credit card information, and possibly do online banking. Life is filled with hoops,
jumps, and seemingly impossible boundaries. However, when including technology, it allows an
extra vulnerability to you. Unfortunately, some of those vulnerabilities are directly related to
people with only one goal, to cause problems. In the growing world of technology, the ability to
steal personal information is becoming much easier than ever before. With society switching to the
cyber world as a more convenient way of life, it is imperative to take the proper methods for
protecting your information.
Before taking the proper methods, it s important to know what the criminal does to steal your

software being used against the user s permission. Forms of malware, such as ransomware,
spyware, and root kits are some you may heard of, but are only a portion of the tools used to steal

Loss Of Chance Is An Alternative Cause Of Action
Loss of chance is identified as an alternative cause of action , particularly, in cases of medical
negligence. In recent cases, where actions based on causation have failed, it has succeeded. The
onus lies on the plaintiff to prove negligence by the defendant and loss of a chance of a better
outcome. However, a plaintiff cannot establish that the defendant s negligenceprobably caused their
injury. The concept of loss of chance is defined as a doctrine that permits the recovery of damages
upon destruction or reduction of prospects to ultimately achieve a more favorable outcome. In the
case of Rufo v Hosking, the court found that In order to recover damages for the loss of a chance
of a better outcome, the plaintiff is required to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Consequently, provided negligence is found, more than a one percent (1%) chance of a better
outcome needs to be proven by a plaintiff in order to be awarded damages. However, the
quantification of damages is related to the quantification of the loss of chance in relation to the
injury. The value of the injury could be a small or a large fraction of the amount.
Most recently courts have established the loss of chance doctrine as an alternative or additional
cause of action in medical negligence litigation. Although loss of chance had earlier been
recognised in the High Court of Australia as an suitable cause of action in non medical cases of
negligence as well, in the matter of Sellars v Adelaide Petroleum NL, and had been considered
but not implemented in the medical cases of Chappel v Hart, and Naxakis v Western General
Hospital, it was a major factor in the New South Wales medical case of Rufo v Hosking.
Subsequently, the loss of chance has been the basis of several other successful cases of negligence
against doctors or health authorities in New South Wales, including Halverson v Dobler, State of
New South Wales v Burton, and Tabet v Mansour. It was also successful in the matter of Gavalas v
Singh.
In contrast, the concept of loss of chance was rejected in the case of Gregg v Scott, and has not yet
been reconsidered by the High Court. Despite the fact that this case has no authority in Australia, the

The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Role Play Activity

context by asking to perform dialogues, negotiate with your partner on an item such as computer or

This activity will help them to know the right place of each discourse and give them an

In simulations, 1st year EFL learners could bring items to the class to create a realistic
environment. For instance, if a learner is acting as a singer, she brings a microphone to sing and
so on. Role plays and simulations have many advantages. First, since they are entertaining, they
motivate the learners. Second, as Harmer (2001, p. 275) suggests, they increase the self confidence
of hesitant learners, because in role play and simulation activities, they will have a different role
and do not have to speak for themselves.
Storytelling
First year EFL Learners could create their own stories to tell their classmates or summarize a tale
or story they heard from somebody else. Story telling could help learners developing creative
thinking and to know how to develop ideas from introduction, body, and then conclusion without
forgetting to include the characters and the setting. Learners also can tell riddles or jokes. For
instance, at the beginning of each class, the teacher should call few learners to tell short riddles or
jokes as an opening. In this way, he will not only address their speaking ability but getting the

Examining The Nature Of God In The Hebrew Bible
Since the dawn of human consciousness our species has labored with the thought of something
bigger than us, someone like the best part of us, something divine. Whether an individual believes
in or doesn t believe in a higher power, there is no question that a lot has been done both in and for
that higher powers name. Wars have been fought, commitments have been made, and borders have
been pushed in the name of god. People have come together and been torn apart because of their
belief in a higher power. Through the use of fiction, poetry, and prose, we have used literature to
define, explain, and argue the nature of god. And God created the human in his image, (A: 159),
this line from The Hebrew Bible is one of the most influential lines

The Economic Crisis Of Western Central Banks Essay
Because of the extreme severity of the Great Recession in 2008, western central banks have since
applied a series of unconventional monetary policies besides normal ones. One of the
characteristics of the unconventional policies is the intended near to zero interest rates, so those
policies are also named Zero Interest RatePolicies (ZIRP). ZIRP are designed to help the financial
market escape from the liquidity trap , a situation in which normal expansionary monetary
policies fail to decrease interest rates below zero and thus become ineffective. Without a doubt,
ZIRP are necessary tools for policymakers to intervene in the financial catastrophe of 2008;
however, even though the recession has officially ended in June 2009, ZIRP are still in effect
now. The application of ZIRP in the US demonstrates the necessity of the Federal Reserve (FED)
for both monetary and fiscal policies in the regulatory system. However, ZIRP are in fact
encouraging institutions and individuals to seek risks rather than avoid them, and the
accumulating dangers as a result make ZIRP necessary to protect the financial market and the US
Treasury from greater destruction. Therefore, people are trapped in a downward spiral, and the exit
and economic recovery are postponed.
The negative effects of ZIRP begin from an unequal distribution of new money inflows. In the US,
quantitative easings (QEs) and Fed loans were first targeted at large financial institutions.

Makerbot Extruder Case Study
Makerbot extruder
3D printing technologies are changing the way we produce objects. 3D printing is part of a
process known as an additive manufacturing, where an object is created by adding layer by layer.
Additive manufacturing allows designers create complex parts for machines.
Extruder is a part of the printer which draws and melts the filament. If the pressure and speed are
kept constant then the material flow is maintained uniform. The material should be in a semi solid
state when it comes out from the nozzle and should be able to solidify and bond to the previously
extruded material to form the 3D object.
How does it work?
The first step in 3D printing is to create a blue print of the object. Makerbot replicator 2 have a

Rationale And Issues That Occurs When Managers Read A...
This paper will discuss the rationale and issues that occurs when managers read a popular book by a
management guru and hastily tries to implement its idea and one size fits all recommendations
without proper regards for the organization s unique problems and needs. The quick fix mentality
that fosters this problem can be avoided by remaining current with managementliterature from the
field, ensure that the concepts are applied based on science rather than advocacy. The First 90
Days: Proven Strategies for Getting Up to Speed Faster and Smarter by Michael D. Watkins is a
remarkable book that covers all the issues listed above with real scenario. Mr. Watkins was
asked by Johnson Johnson s Corporate Management Development Group (J J) to develop
workshops and coaching processes to accelerate the company s leaders in transition, and his
work soon evolved into an engaging partnership with J J as the testing bed for his new
development and deployment of his ideas. I really enjoyed reading this book, because it made me
think of all the times when I faced these problems and did not understand why or what went
wrong in many situations by reading the book it changed the way I think about many things. The
actions are taken during the first few months in a new role will largely determine if there is
success or failure, when this happens the problems can be traced to vicious cycles that develop in
the first few months on the job, whether failure to lose your opportunities or

Wholesome Hamburger Company Case Study
Business Ethical Dilemma
California is facing a big drought which is affecting society as a whole as well as business.
People are being advised to preserve the water and used as less as possible. Water is a limited
resource which cost will increase for the society because of the drought. However, Wholesome
Hamburger Company s water resource is allocated by the government, giving the company the
privilege of not increasing the cost of water supply for the business. In other words, the company
will not incur an extra expense which could affect the business profit.
Furthermore, the dilemma on hand is that the company is only taking into consideration the
business profit. They are ignoring the drought that is affecting the society and the effect ... Show

This strategy will benefit the company as well as the society as a whole. Every company has to
consider the corporate social responsibility. According to Hollender Fenichell, Corporate Social
Responsibility is: an ongoing commitment by business to behave ethically and to contribute to
economic development when demonstrating respect for people, communities, society at large, and
the environment. In other words, Wholesome Hamburger Company is behaving ethically by
saving as much water as possible, because they are taking into consideration the needs of the
society as well as the importance of preserving water, which is a limited environmental resource.
When a firm is social responsible, customers as well as employees develop a strong loyalty to the
company. If we implement the executive suggestion of ignoring the water drought because it will
not affect the company expense. It will show that the company is not socially responsible. This will
result into loosing customers and valuable employees.
Moreover, every time that a company take a decision need to consider long tern consequences. If
Wholesome Hamburger Company continue using the same amount of water, the company in the
long run will be affected. The more water they used, the less water resource that will be available.
Then, in the future, the company will have to pay more for the same amount of water. This will
increase the expenses of the company and decrease the company profit. As a result, society and the
environment will be

Analysis Of The Shawshank Redemption By Frank Darabont
Alec Heitz
Katherine Wagner
HUM 224 02
Evaluative Essay
October 13th, 2015
Evaluative Analysis: The Shawshank Redemption When it comes to movies, I am not exactly
what you could consider well versed. Had it not been for several close friends of mine, I would
have never even seen blockbuster hits such as Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, or Back to the
Future. The reason for this is not because I dislike watching movies, but rather due to the restrictive
nature of my parents. Thus, I have not had the privilege to enjoy The Shawshank Redemption,
Frank Darabont s 1994 adaptation of the Stephen King novel, until recently. Due to countless
positive reviews and the recommendations of friends, I anticipated that it would be a must see for
those mature enough to appreciate its commentary on the human condition. After viewing the flick,
I can certainly verify The Shawshank Redemption deserves its must see status, as it contains such
relatable themes and excellent cinematic techniques. Various themes are presented in the film;
however, the most prevalent of these themes are the severity of isolation and the redeeming
qualities of hope. The Shawshank Redemption follows the story of Andy Dufresne, a man wrongly
convicted of the murder of his wife and her lover, and his time spent at the Shawshank prison, as
well as Andy s eventual escape. Early on, it becomes extremely evident that those imprisoned at
Shawshank must deal with unbearable isolation on multiple levels. Shawshank

How Does George Orwell Use Literary Techniques In 1984
1984 Essay
In his novel 1984, how does George Orwell use literary techniques in order to position readers to
consider Government Control?
1984 is a novel that was published by George Orwell in 1949. Orwell uses different literary
techniques throughout the novel to show the reader how he saw the future in thirty five years time.
To show manipulation, power, rebellionand loyalty, Orwell uses different literary techniques to
show the reader the key ideas of the novel. The reader can tell from the start of the novel that the
novel has a boring and bleak society because the first few words of the novel read It was a bright
cold day (Orwell, 1949) which shows that it is not a happy society. The novel was set in Oceania,
1984 which would have been the future at the time the novel was written, since 1984 was written in
1948.
Manipulation is a big part of 1984. Orwell uses many different techniques to show every way the
government is controlling the people both psychologically and physically as shown in detail
through Winston. There is proof of this when Orwell uses repetition when Winston starts shouting

There is nothing anyone can do if the party decide to do something that the public do not like.
Orwell uses imagery to prove that when Nothing was gone from the room except his mother and
sister ,(Orwell, 1949) this really shows the power that the party had over the people. The real
power of the party was shown at the end of the novel when someone as strong minded as Winston
gave up, he gave up and accepted that he loved Big Brother (Orwell, 1949). Orwell uses self
reflection to recap all of Winston s struggles throughout the novel. The power of government
control has been reached after Orwell proved that someone as rebellious as Winston has accepted

The Soldier By Rupert Brooke Analysis
Compare and contrast the language features used by Wilfred Owen and Rupert Brooke to express
their perception of war.
World War 1 was known at the time as the, the war to end all wars. The war fought between July
28, 1914, and November 11, 1918, during this period of time the perception of war and the
casualties of war changed immensely. This changed of perception can be established through the
poets of Wilfred Owen and Rupert Brooke. In the poems, The Soldier (1914), by Rupert Brooke,
and Dulce et Decorum Est (October 1917), by Wilfred Owen, both poets use language techniques
to assist the readers to comprehend each text. The Soldier is a portrayal of Rupert Brooke s
eternal love for his country as he goes to war. Rupert uses personification to structure his poem in
the outline of a sonnet to portray the soldier s extreme nationalism for England. While Wilfred
describes the ugly reality of war in his poem, Dulce et Decorum Est. Through the efficient use of
metaphors and a rhyme scheme, Owen s poem leaves a lasting image on the mind s of the audience.
Among the poems Dulce et Decorum Est and The Soldier, there are a numeral similarity. The use of
Titling, is created to mislead the reader, in the sense that the terms are used to contradict the content
of the poem. The Soldier evokes melancholy, but in reality the poem reveals that fighting in war is
for the lone purpose of defending one s country, and showcasing your nationalism. Hence
encouraging the act think this heart, all evil shed away , to then state his true extreme nationalism
through the passage no less gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given . While
contrastingly the Dulce et Decorum Est, reflects jingoism. But the poem itself exposes the cold
truth about war through the tone of resentment, thus disheartening glory. When considering the
structure of each poem, they are very similar in the way that they are both written as an iambic
pentameter. Within addition they both share a notable structure rhyme pattern. With Dulce et
Decorum Est, portraying a rhyme that is broken at one main point GAS! quick boys An ecstasy of
fumbling this break, can be interpreted through the audience as a sense of panic that would have

Proximal Convoluted Tubule Structure
Describe the structure and location of the proximal convoluted tubule, loop of Henle, distal
convoluted tubule, collecting duct, and papillary duct. The proximal convoluted tubule measures
approximately 14 mm long and 60 Ојm in diameter. Simple cuboidal epithelium makes up its wall.
The cells rest on a basement membrane, which forms the outer surface of the tubule. The loops of
Henle are continuations of the proximal convoluted tubules. Each loop has two limbs: the
descending limb and the ascending limb. The first part of the descending limb is similar in structure
to the proximal convoluted tubules. The loops of Henle that extend into the medulla become very
thin near the end of the loop. The lumen in the thin part narrows, and an abrupt transition

He analyzes the concept of strong ties and weak ties and how these relationships affect an individual s willpower and determination to help a cause. Gregory Orr puts these ideas into context in his memoir, Return to Hayneville , in which he recounts his experience and involvement in the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Orr s experience helped him learn about himself and primarily helps an individual discover the importance of living. Gladwell would classify Orr as someone who shared no relationship with the cause and only joined because because he wanted to find himself in the midst of chaos not necessarily because he was passionate about the civil rights movement. Gladwell describes the movement of sit ins across the south as a fever . Orr found himself caught up in the contagion, he endured the beatings and the injustice the same as everyone else but his motives were not set for civil rights, he realized this when he was taken and held captive, Even as I sank into depression and brooded in the stifling heat of that jail barn, I was learning that I wanted to live, (Orr, 223). When he was released Orr left without alerting the COFO office because he felt ashamed. It was easy for him to walk away from the cause for him to walk away from the cause because he as he left he wasn t leaving anything or anyone behind. Gladwell s explains that weak ties seldom lead to high risk activism (Gladwell, 137). In Gregory Orr s essay, Return to Hayneville , published by The Virginia Quarterly Review, Orr revisited the place of his abduction by armed vigilantes in Alabama as a Civil Rights worker in 1965. There are three ways minerals are mined, I.Open pit mining Referred as a surface mining technique of extracting rock or minerals from the Earth. Effect on the Environment: Sometimes there is low forest degradation and sometime sudden and catastrophic clear cutting for mining. This ultimately reduces the sources of rain. Forests extract CO2 and pollutants from the air, thus contributing to biosphere sustainability. When mining happens a lot of waste is dumped which pollutes the land that decreases sustainability. Mining involves the use of explosives in a large amount and drilling, when explosives are used a lot of harmful chemicals such as NO2, CO2 and sulphur are released in to the atmosphere which increases global warming. In these books Spiegelman tells his father s story of survival through the horrors of the Holocaust. Spiegelman simultaneously presents an inner story of the conflict between him and his father, Vladek Spiegelman as both he and his father try to come to terms with the past, and work to have a normal life. This feelings of tension and conflict suffered by Vladek and Art in Maus I and II is caused by a transitional and rebounding feeling of survivor s guilt caused by Vladek s passing down of his own guilt, Art s guilt of neglect, and Art s attempts to come to terms with his own guilt of survival. This guilt is visible when Art is talking to his wife and tells her that he somehow wishes he could have be in Auschwitz with his parents, so he could really know what they lived through. Art also feels guilt for being born after his older brother Richieu, whom he describes as his Ghost Brother . I see her all day and I know next to nothing about her. She sits alone most of the time, an almost forlorn lookplastered to her face. Alone now, I know she sees me. The incessant hoodies she wears contribute to absorbing her. I suppose it reflects her personality, always drawn in, like a tortoise in a shell. I can see her low self esteem in the way she slouches and the dullness in her eyes when she s contemplating. On one hand, I feel sympathetic for her. It s as if life for her is so gruesome. On the other hand, however, her demeanor is disgusting. Low self esteem is the least attractive quality in others. She seems comfortable, so why is it she always seems so sorrowfully somber? I shake my head and stand as the bell rings, heading to second hour. On our way to second hour, I walk behind Paige. Once she steps outside the classroom her face instantly takes on that disheartening expression. I wonder silently, is her life really that poisonous? Does she return home and act this way? I ... Science is like a great and powerful king that shall never be slain, it forever saves it s people but at the same time causing destruction among the enemy. Henrietta Lacks has had greater adversities in the course of contributions to science (feeding the beast) over Douglas Mawson, and Phineas Gage. The story of Gage, Mawson, and Lacks are all interesting topics, but the Lacks still faced the most adversity out of the three. Henrietta Lacks lost her life for science, faced great pain during her life, and a slow mental deterioration from knowing with almost all certainty that she would die. Meanwhile, Mawson led an arctic exploration, and somehow survived with his life. Gage had a horrible accident and somehow fully recovered from it. Taking a Look at Poliomyelitis Polio which may also be called poliomyelitis is a viral disease that can be spread or transmitted from individual to individual mainly through the fecal oral route. The word polio is of Greek origin polios meaning grey and myelos meaning marrow which refers to the grey particle of the spinal cord. It is noted that about 90% of polio infections are asymptomatic but affected patients can show an amount of if the virus enters their blood circulation. In rare cases, the virus can enter the central nervous system which could lead to the destruction of some motor neurons which automatically causes muscle weakness and possible flaccid paralysis. Polio may occur in three different forms: Spinal polio: this is the most commonly noted form of polio characterized by paralysis most often involves the lower limbs (legs). Bulbar polio: this kind of polio could be very severe and can lead to muscle weakness (muscles innervated by the cranial nerves). Bulbospinal polio: this is the combination of spinal and bulbar paralysis. HISTORY Polio was first discovered as a coition by Jakob Heine in 1840. The virus known to cause this disease or infection is the POLIOVIRUS which was first noticed in 1908 by Karl Landsteiner. Major polio epidemics started to appear in the late 19th century in Europe. He immediately found himself in a difficult position as pope, with numerous issues arising, such as the hostility escalating between the Holy Roman Emperor and the papacy, the increase of Islamic incursions into the Holy Land and of course the Mongol invasion of Europe. There was indeed prior warning of the defensive vulnerability of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, as Pope Innocent IV received a letter complaining that there were only one hundred pilgrim knights defending the city, and more reinforcements from Western Europe was needed for protection. Although this may have been note by the newly appointed Pope, the struggle with the Holy Roman Emperor through the continuation of Pope Gregory IX s policy against Frederick II may have overshadowed this plea from the Holy Land. In fact, Pope Innocent IV s position was so untenable in Rome due to the Emperor s actions to increase dissent, that he fled to Lyon and immediately set about organising the Council of Lyon for 1245. His letter to Henry III was part of an effort from his base in Lyon to call for a crusade in reaction to the sacking of Jerusalem by the Khwarezmians, but he struggled to garner much support for the crusade due to the internal struggles within Europe, with only King Louis IX fully committed to the campaign. The relationship between Pope Innocent IV and King Henry III is one of note, as since the ties between Rome and the English King were established early through the papal support given to Henry at the end of the Baron s war. The papacy desperately needed political allies due to the increasing threat posed by the military might of the Holy Roman Emperor and Henry II could be said to be one of them. • 21. How Does Prufrock Show The Importance Of Time T. S. Eliot s main purpose for writing The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock is to show the importance of time. Prufrock, the main character and narrator of the story seems to think he has plenty of time to sit around and wait forever to ask, whom we assume is someone he likes, an overwhelming question (page 2524). Prufrock seems to be a big procrastinator, and uses the timehe should be using to make excuses as to why he shouldn t rush since he has time later. Time for you and time for me, And time yet for a hundred indecisions, And for a hundred visions and revisions, Before the taking of a toast and tea (page 2525). In this quote Prufrock seems to stall his question even more deciding that there is time to be indecisive before taking his toast and tea. Prufrock s stalling and convincing of himself that there is more time, is exactly what makes him not have time and grow old. Before we know it, Prufrock is an old man who now wonders whether or not he should have used his time wisely when he was younger and would it have been worth it, after all (page 2526). In the end, there is nothing he can do to get back the time he wasted so he simply walks the beaches wondering whether the mermaids will come sing to him. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 22. Reflection Of A Discourse Community Introduction Paul Ryan once said, Every successful individual knows that his or her achievement depends on a community of persons working together. We do not often realize how important it is for everybody to work together to achieve a goal. A community is a group of individual people gathered together to form a whole, like a school, local church, government entity, non profit organization, sport team, etc. This whole can make reference to a discourse community. According to John Swales, discourse communities are unions where individuals have a common purpose, and communicate to achieve this. There are six characteristics that make up a discourse community. Literature Review In the article, The Concept of Discourse Community, John Swales defines what a discourse community is, and yet, he strongly argues that a discourse community must meet six specific characteristics. A social group must have a set of common goals, methods of intercommunication between its members, feedback, the usage of genres, a determined lexis, and a rank that defines the level of expertise each member has. With that being said, Swales highlights the need of a clarification of what differs a discourse community from a speech community. In Erik s Borg (2003) article, Discourse community , the concept of a speech community refers to actual people who recognize their language use as different from other language users. (p.398) Additionally, Swales states that discourse communities recruits its members by persuasion, training, or relevant qualification and speech communities recruits its [members] by birth, accident or adoption . Even though speech communities do share similar linguistic rules among its members, norms, and theories, they do not share common a common goal. They lack communication among its members, and lastly, they do not accomplish the utilization of genres like a discourse community does. Moreover, it is established that genres are how things get done, when language is used to accomplish them (Martin, 1985). Swales (1990) indicates that discourse ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 23. Dark Side Leadership And How They Can Get Into Power Dark side leadership creates problems for organisations and the individual, the most common form of this being derailment. Smart (1999) estimated that the cost of a failed executive to be $2.7 million. This essay is going to focus on what dark side leadership is and how they can get into power when the consequences can be so great. The drawbacks of such research will be discussed and alternative explanations explored. Before concluding that an inclusive approach must be adopted. The majority of research into how destructive leaders can get into power has focussed on the individual themselves. Kenny and Zaccaro (1983) investigated leader emergence and found that 48 82% of the variance in leadership emergence was due to personality. The area of dark side leadership lacks coherence around definitions and causations (Slattery, 2009). The majority of this essay will focus on personality explaining dark side leadership emergence. Firstly, it is important to look at leadership emergence with regards to dark side traits as proposed by Hogan and Hogan (1997). Dark side traits are defined as traits that are undesirable, that are present in excess and not traits in which they are lacking (Hogan Hogan, 2001). They identified 11 subclinical traits that can be present in dark side leaders, e.g. narcissism, by using the Hogan Development Survey. It could even be argued that many important landmarks in our state history were defined by acts of reform, such as the implementation of direct democracy into its state constitution during the progressive era of the late 19th and early 20th century. In modern California, it could be argued that there has been no greater landmark than the passage of Proposition 140. But, following implementation of Proposition 140, instability was very pronounced in the in the first years particularly in the assembly. For the first 8 years after the implementation of term limits, speakers of the assembly were generally inexperienced and ineffective, lasting only for budgets and an election. It was not until the appointment of John A. Perez in 2009, that the assembly began to stabilize Another aspect of instability and ineffectualness of the assembly has been its committees. Due inexperience of assemblymen, the process of identifying flawed legislation through gatekeeping has not been used as effectively as it has in the past. The main tree species found before and after the fire are Douglas fir, grand fir, Pinus ponderosa (ponderosa pine; PIPO), and Pinus contorta (lodgepole pine; PICO). This approach to pricing enables companies to either fit costs to prices or scrap products or services that cannot be generated cost effectively. (iv) Competition Factor in Pricing: Market situation plays an effective role in pricing. Pricing policy has some managerial discretion where there is a considerable degree of imperfection in competition. In perfect competition, the individual producers have no discretion in pricing. In other market situations like oligopoly and monopolistic competition, the individual producers take the prices of the rival products in determining their price. If the primary determinant of price changes in the competitive condition is the market place, the pricing policy can least be categorized as competition based pricing. (v) Profit Factor in Pricing: In fixing the price for products, the producers consider mainly the profit aspect. Each producer has his aim of profit maximization. If the objective is profit maximization, the critical rule is to select the price at which MR = MC. Generally, the pricing policy is based on the goal of obtaining a reasonable profit. Most of the businessmen want to hold the price at constant level. They do not desire frequent price fluctuation. Examining The Nature Of God In The Hebrew Bible Since the dawn of human consciousness our species has labored with the thought of something bigger than us, someone like the best part of us, something divine. Whether an individual believes in or doesn t believe in a higher power, there is no question that a lot has been done both in and for that higher powers name. Wars have been fought, commitments have been made, and borders have been pushed in the name of god. People have come together and been torn apart because of their belief in a higher power. • 42. The Economic Crisis Of Western Central Banks Essay Because of the extreme severity of the Great Recession in 2008, western central banks have since applied a series of unconventional monetary policies besides normal ones. One of the characteristics of the unconventional policies is the intended near to zero interest rates, so those policies are also named Zero Interest RatePolicies (ZIRP). ZIRP are designed to help the financial market escape from the liquidity trap , a situation in which normal expansionary monetary policies fail to decrease interest rates below zero and thus become ineffective. Without a doubt, ZIRP are necessary tools for policymakers to intervene in the financial catastrophe of 2008; however, even though the recession has officially ended in June 2009, ZIRP are still in effect now. The application of ZIRP in the US demonstrates the necessity of the Federal Reserve (FED) for both monetary and fiscal policies in the regulatory system. However, ZIRP are in fact encouraging institutions and individuals to seek risks rather than avoid them, and the accumulating dangers as a result make ZIRP necessary to protect the financial market and the US Treasury from greater destruction. Therefore, people are trapped in a downward spiral, and the exit and economic recovery are postponed. The negative effects of ZIRP begin from an unequal distribution of new money inflows. In the US, quantitative easings (QEs) and Fed loans were first targeted at large financial institutions. According to a list of recipients of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 47. Analysis Of The Shawshank Redemption By Frank Darabont Alec Heitz Katherine Wagner HUM 224 02 Evaluative Essay October 13th, 2015 Evaluative Analysis: The Shawshank Redemption When it comes to movies, I am not exactly what you could consider well versed. Had it not been for several close friends of mine, I would have never even seen blockbuster hits such as Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, or Back to the Future. The reason for this is not because I dislike watching movies, but rather due to the restrictive nature of my parents. Thus, I have not had the privilege to enjoy The Shawshank Redemption, Frank Darabont s 1994 adaptation of the Stephen King novel, until recently. Due to countless positive reviews and the recommendations of friends, I anticipated that it would be a must see for those mature enough to appreciate its commentary on the human condition. After viewing the flick, I can certainly verify The Shawshank Redemption deserves its must see status, as it contains such relatable themes and excellent cinematic techniques. Various themes are presented in the film; however, the most prevalent of these themes are the severity of isolation and the redeeming qualities of hope. The Shawshank Redemption follows the story of Andy Dufresne, a man wrongly convicted of the murder of his wife and her lover, and his time spent at the Shawshank prison, as well as Andy s eventual escape. Early on, it becomes extremely evident that those imprisoned at Shawshank must deal with unbearable isolation on multiple levels. Shawshank ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This changed of perception can be established through the poets of Wilfred Owen and Rupert Brooke. In the poems, The Soldier (1914), by Rupert Brooke, and Dulce et Decorum Est (October 1917), by Wilfred Owen, both poets use language techniques to assist the readers to comprehend each text. The Soldier is a portrayal of Rupert Brooke s eternal love for his country as he goes to war. Rupert uses personification to structure his poem in the outline of a sonnet to portray the soldier s extreme nationalism for England. While Wilfred describes the ugly reality of war in his poem, Dulce et Decorum Est. Through the efficient use of metaphors and a rhyme scheme, Owen s poem leaves a lasting image on the mind s of the audience.
