This document summarizes a presentation on converting to dissolving pulp (DP) technology. It discusses how DP production has traditionally been sulfite-based but is increasingly using sulfate pulp. Worldwide DP consumption is expected to grow steadily. Currently, there are no continuous cooking references for DP. Converting to PHK (pre-hydrolysis kraft) cooking can produce DP with over 92% alpha cellulose content. The fiberline and bleaching can use proven technologies, but the mill design requires special considerations like higher residual alkali levels. Recent advances have made the PHK process more attractive for robust control and stable feed volumes. Several mills have announced plans to convert lines to DP production.
