SYLLABUS: PGDM -TPS (2T1) DEPT: OPERATIONS
CREDITS: 3 TERM : III

Objective of the Module:
1. To acquaint the students with importance of material and information flows in
production and service operations
2. To gain knowledge about process and sub-process of management of material
flow, design, operation, control of such flow system and their components
3. To know the various tools and techniques for the management of supply chain
and its constituents
4. To understand adoption and application of SCM in practice
Value Addition: At the end of this Module, the student will be able to appreciate the
various entities involved, their role & responsibilities, in Supply chain. It will also help
him to monitor the performance of a supply chain.
Pre-requisite: A course on Operations Management, Further reading: Logistic and
distribution Management, Functional modules – ERP (MM, S&D), CRM
Program Goals: Basic concepts regarding the effect of external Factors on
delivery mechanism

 The total value chain-Unit 1
Chapter 1-(Introduction to SCM, Importance of SCM, Origin of SCM, Important
elements of SCM)
 Total costs – elimination of unnecessary cost; Improving delivery mechanism-
Unit 2
(Chapter 2-Purchase Management- Role of purchasing in organization,
Purchasing process, sourcing decisions, Role of Supplier base, supplier
selection, Number of suppliers, Centralised or decentralized purchasing,
International / global sourcing.
Chapter 3-Supplier Relations Management-Creating and managing Supplier
Relationships, Developing successful partners, Supplier evaluation and
Certification, supplier development, Supplier awards, SRM Software
Chapter 4-Strategic sourcing for SCM- developing strategic sourcing strategies,
supply base reduction program, strategic alliance, outsourcing, managing and
developing 2nd tier supplier relationships, use of e-procurement system,
benchmarking
Chapter 5-Domestic and international transportation-Impact of transportation on
SCM, Fundamentals of transportation, warehousing, e-commerce &
transportation
