Science takes over Valletta

Student organizations in Valletta, Malta held a science and art festival with over 20 events to showcase how science can be fun and interesting. Experiments were conducted throughout Valletta and information points were set up for the public to learn through discussions. The House of Representatives was also used to help Members of Parliament familiarize themselves with university research programs. The goal was to engage the public in science in an entertaining way.

This document summarizes the results of a visitor survey conducted at 21 museums in the Highland Museum Forum over the summer of 2012. The survey aimed to create a profile of typical visitors and collect data to support future funding applications. A total of 1,871 surveys were collected, representing 1.7% of the 112,761 total visitors across 18 participating museums. Key findings include that visitors were mostly domestic and foreign tourists visiting the area for holidays, interested in Scotland's history and heritage, and likely to visit one other museum. Over 90% rated their overall experience as excellent or good.

Scientix collects best practices in STEM teaching and promotes teacher training. Additional online portals like eTwinning and GoLab are tailored for students and link vocational and secondary education to help reduce early school leaving. Scientix provides resources for teaching, learning, training courses, news, projects and a community for STEM educators. To effectively enhance STEM curriculum, schools must be the primary focus of new programs. Scientix offers opportunities to tackle issues in STEM education across Europe.

SCIENCE: SCALE, OPENNESS AND TRUSTSocial Media and Museums
Museums are missing opportunities to utilize social media to engage visitors and crowdsource exhibit content and conversations. While some museums are currently using social media for marketing, visitor interactions, and extending their physical spaces, more can be done to turn visitors into active contributors who add and share content, direct exhibits and conversations, and become part of the exhibit themselves. However, challenges around content ownership, accuracy, and resources must be addressed. If implemented successfully, social media could create new learning opportunities, personalize experiences, and build community engagement at low cost.

The third project meeting of the "Adopt Your Heritage" project was held on Milos Island, Greece from June 25-28, 2010. The 17 participants from Lithuania, Turkey, Romania and Greece presented their choices of 3-5 cultural heritages for each country to be included in a booklet. They developed strategies for encouraging public participation in cultural events and education. The group visited important historic sites on Milos Island like the Venus of Milos statue and ancient theatre, as well as a unique lava landscape. They experienced local culture through dining at small tavernas and traditional music.

No hope for the human race

Drunk driver gets probation
A 20-year-old British man living in Malta pleaded guilty to getting drunk on New Year's Eve, crashing a car belonging to his former employer into a villa, and driving without a license or insurance. He was sentenced to one year probation, a one month suspension of his driving license, and ordered to pay €1,500 in damages.
Zuckerberg sister in Facebook gaffe
Mark Zuckerberg's sister Randi posted a picture on her personal Facebook profile that was meant to be seen by friends only. However, a marketing director who had a mutual friend with Randi was able to see the picture and posted it to her Twitter account with over 40,000 followers. Randi tweeted at the marketing director upset that the picture was shared more widely than she intended due to Facebook's privacy settings. Many people reacted saying Facebook's privacy settings are difficult to navigate.

Pope Benedict will begin tweeting on December 12th under the handle @pontifex, which means "pope" and "bridge builder". The Vatican spokesperson said the Pope wants to reach out to everyone on Twitter. The first tweets will answer questions sent with #askpontifex in several languages. The tweets will contain spiritual messages from the Pope's weekly audiences and blessings, rather than being written by others.

The Pope met with over 7,000 circus performers from around the world who had gathered at the Vatican to celebrate the Year of Faith. During the meeting, the Pope stroked a lion cub and applauded the performers for bringing joy to the world through their art. He welcomed them and thanked them for expressing the joy of being Christian through their unique performances and abilities.
Deficit widens
The central government recorded a deficit of €322.5 million in the first 10 months of the year, up from €289.6 million in the same period last year. While recurrent revenue increased by €162.9 million, total expenditure rose by €195.8 million, widening the deficit by €32.9 million. Recurrent expenditure increased by €125 million primarily due to higher social security benefits, medicines, EU contributions, assistance for church schools and help for the elderly to live independently.

Women in court for stealing ring
Two women, Michelle Bugeja and Charlotte Vella, were accused of stealing a €400 ring from a jewelry shop in St. Paul's Bay, Malta on June 23, 2010. Bugeja distracted the salesgirl while Vella asked to see necklaces, and Bugeja stole the ring. When they got to their car, Bugeja handed the ring to Vella, who sold it for €140. Both women were found to be accomplices, though Bugeja pleaded guilty while Vella denied involvement. They received a probation order and conditional discharge from the court.

- 1. Science takes over Valletta Science took to the streets of Valletta this evening, bringing students together participate and share thoughts on how science can be fun and interesting. Various student organisations got together to hold a science and art festival, navigating through over 20 events spread around Valletta. One of the spots used was the House of Representatives which was used, at the invitation of Speaker Michael Frendo, to help Members of Parliament familiarise themselves with a number of the research programmes being conducted by researchers and the university. Throughout Valletta, a number of information points were set up where the public could ask questions and discuss events. Experiments were conducted by university students, who passed kebab sticks through balloons, extinguished flames without water and made Elephant’s Toothpaste. Tooth fairies, games, and a giant tooth model were used to give the public oral health advice in an entertaining way. Science in the City is supported by the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme and the Malta Arts Fund.
