Natural
Resources
Natural Resources
Everything available in our nature which
can be used to satisfy our needs, provided,
it is technologically accessible,
economically feasible and culturally
acceptable can be termed as ‘Natural
Resource’.
TYPES OF RESOURCES
On the Basis of Origin
1)Biotic Resources:These are obtained
from biosphere and have life such as
human beings, flora and fauna, fisheries,
livestock etc
2) Abiotic Resources:: All those things
which are composed of non-living things
are called abiotic resources. For example,
rocks and metals.
On the Basis of Exhaustibility
Renewable Resources: The resources which can be
renewed or reproduced by physical, chemical or
mechanical processes are known as renewable or
replenishable resources. For example, solar and
wind energy, water, forests and wildlife, etc. The
renewable resource may further be divided into
continuous or flow
Non-Renewable Resources: These occur over a very
long geological time. Minerals and fossil fuels are
examples of such resources. These resources take
millions of years in their formation. Some of the
resources like metals are recyclable and some like
fossil fuels cannot be recycled and get exhausted
with their use..
Forestand Wildlife
Resources
We share this planet with millions of other living
beings, starting from micro-organisms and bacteria,
lichens to banyan trees, elephants and blue whales.
This entire habitat that we live in has immense
biodiversity. We humans along with all living
organisms form a complex web of ecological system
in which we are only a part and very much
dependent on this system for our own existence. For
example, the plants, animals and micro-organisms
re-create the quality of the air we breathe, the water
we drink and the soil that produces our food without
which we cannot survive. Forests play a key role in
the ecological system as these are also the primary
producers on which all other living beings depend.
Flora and Fauna in India
If you look around, you will be able to find
that there are some animals and plants
which are unique in your area. In fact,
India is one of the world’s richest
countries in terms of its vast array of
biological diversity. This is possibly twice
or thrice the number yet to be
discovered. You have already studied in
detail about the extent and variety of
forest and wildlife resources in India. You
may have realised the importance of
these resources in our daily life. These
diverse flora and fauna are so well
integrated in our daily life that we take
these for granted. But, lately, they are
under great stress mainy due to
insensitivity to our environment.
Uses of Forests
● Fuelwood. For the rural
population, wood is an
important source of energy for
cooking and heating.
● Fodder. Fodder from the
forest forms an important
source for cattle and other
grazing animals in the hilly
and the arid regions and
during a drought.
● Wind breaks and shelter belts
● Soil erosion check
● Soil improvement.
Vanishing Forests
The dimensions of deforestation in India
are staggering. The forest and tree cover
in the country is estimated at 79.42
million hectare, which is 24.16 per cent of
the total geographical area (dense forest
12.2 per cent; open forest 9.14 per cent;
and mangrove 0.14 per cent). According to
the State of Forest Report (2015), the
dense forest cover has increased by 3,775
sq km since 2013. However, this apparent
increase in the forest cover is due to
conservation measures, management
interventions and plantation, etc., by
different agencies.
Steps to prevent deforestation
1.Plant a Tree where you can.
2.Go paperless at home and in the
office.
3.Buy recycled products and then
recycle them again.
4.Buy certified wood products. ...
5.Support the products of companies
that are committed to reducing
deforestation. ...
6.Raise awareness in your circle and
in your community.
Water Resources
Three-fourth of the earth’s surface is
covered with water, but only a small
proportion of it accounts for
freshwater that can be put to use. This
freshwater is mainly obtained from
surface run off and ground water that
is continually being renewed and
recharged through the hydrological
cycle. All water moves within the
hydrological cycle ensuring that water
is a renewable resource.
WATER SCARCITYAND THE NEED
FOR WATER CONSERVATIONAND
MANAGEMENT
Given the abundance and renewability of
water, it is difficult to imagine that we
may suffer from water scarcity. The
moment we speak of water shortages, we
immediately associate it with regions
having low rainfall or those that are
drought prone. We instantaneously
visualise the deserts of Rajasthan and
women balancing many ‘matkas’ (earthen
pots) used for collecting and storing
water and travelling long distances to get
water. True, the availability of water
resources varies over space and time,
mainly due to the variations in seasonal
and annual precipitation.
STEPSTO PREVENTWATER
SCARCITY
1.Sustainable water
management. Improving water
infrastructure must be a priority,
as water conservation and
efficiency are key components
of sustainable water
management. ...
2.Reclaimed water. ...
3.Pollution control & better
sewage treatment. ...
4.Awareness & Education.
SOIL AS A RESOURCE
Soil is the most important renewable
natural resource. It is the medium of plant
growth and supports different types of
living organisms on the earth. The soil is a
living system. It takes millions of years to
form soil upto a few cm in depth. Relief,
parent rock or bed rock, climate,
vegetation and other forms of life and
time are important factors in the
formation of soil. Various forces of nature
such as change in temperature, actions of
running water, wind and glaciers,
activities of decomposers etc. contribute
to the formation of soil.
SOIL EROSION
The denudation of the soil cover and
subsequent washing down is described as
soil erosion. The processes of soil formation
and erosion, go on simultaneously and
generally there is a balance between the
two. Sometimes, this balance is disturbed
due to human activities like deforestation,
over-grazing, construction and mining etc.,
while natural forces like wind, glacier and
water lead to soil erosion. The running
water cuts through the clayey soils and
makes deep channels as gullies. The land
becomes unfit for cultivation and is known
as bad land. In the Chambal basin such lands
are called ravines. Sometimes water flows
as a sheet over large areas down a slope.
SOIL CONVERSATION
Ploughing along the contour lines can
decelerate the flow of water down the
slopes. This is called contour ploughing.
Steps can be cut out on the slopes making
terraces. Terrace cultivation restricts
erosion. Western and central Himalayas
have well developed terrace farming. Large
fields can be divided into strips. Strips of
grass are left to grow between the crops.
This breaks up the force of the wind. This
method is known as strip cropping. Planting
lines of trees to create shelter also works in
a similar way. Rows of such trees are called
shelter belts. These shelter belts have
contributed significantly to the stabilisation
of sand dunes and in stabilising the desert in
western India.

Science project

  • 1. PMS Public School (Session:2020-21) Science Report File Submitted by: Submitted to: Aksh Sharma Mrs.Shweta Sharma X-E Mr.Ashutosh Dixit 4 Mr.Amit Bharadawaj
  • 2. Ackonowledgement I express my whole hearted regards for honourable principal Mr. Mathews P. Alinchiril who has been providing me all possible facilities to complete this project successfully I am gratefully to my respected subject teachers Shweta maam Ashutosh sir and Amit sir who have been guiding me for preparing this project efficiently.
  • 3. Certificate This is to certify that Aksh Sharma , a student of class 10th has completed the project file under topic Natural Resources under a guiding light of all my subject teachers.
  • 5. Natural Resources Everything available in our nature which can be used to satisfy our needs, provided, it is technologically accessible, economically feasible and culturally acceptable can be termed as ‘Natural Resource’. TYPES OF RESOURCES On the Basis of Origin 1)Biotic Resources:These are obtained from biosphere and have life such as human beings, flora and fauna, fisheries, livestock etc 2) Abiotic Resources:: All those things which are composed of non-living things are called abiotic resources. For example, rocks and metals.
  • 6. On the Basis of Exhaustibility Renewable Resources: The resources which can be renewed or reproduced by physical, chemical or mechanical processes are known as renewable or replenishable resources. For example, solar and wind energy, water, forests and wildlife, etc. The renewable resource may further be divided into continuous or flow Non-Renewable Resources: These occur over a very long geological time. Minerals and fossil fuels are examples of such resources. These resources take millions of years in their formation. Some of the resources like metals are recyclable and some like fossil fuels cannot be recycled and get exhausted with their use..
  • 7. Forestand Wildlife Resources We share this planet with millions of other living beings, starting from micro-organisms and bacteria, lichens to banyan trees, elephants and blue whales. This entire habitat that we live in has immense biodiversity. We humans along with all living organisms form a complex web of ecological system in which we are only a part and very much dependent on this system for our own existence. For example, the plants, animals and micro-organisms re-create the quality of the air we breathe, the water we drink and the soil that produces our food without which we cannot survive. Forests play a key role in the ecological system as these are also the primary producers on which all other living beings depend.
  • 8. Flora and Fauna in India If you look around, you will be able to find that there are some animals and plants which are unique in your area. In fact, India is one of the world’s richest countries in terms of its vast array of biological diversity. This is possibly twice or thrice the number yet to be discovered. You have already studied in detail about the extent and variety of forest and wildlife resources in India. You may have realised the importance of these resources in our daily life. These diverse flora and fauna are so well integrated in our daily life that we take these for granted. But, lately, they are under great stress mainy due to insensitivity to our environment.
  • 9. Uses of Forests ● Fuelwood. For the rural population, wood is an important source of energy for cooking and heating. ● Fodder. Fodder from the forest forms an important source for cattle and other grazing animals in the hilly and the arid regions and during a drought. ● Wind breaks and shelter belts ● Soil erosion check ● Soil improvement.
  • 10. Vanishing Forests The dimensions of deforestation in India are staggering. The forest and tree cover in the country is estimated at 79.42 million hectare, which is 24.16 per cent of the total geographical area (dense forest 12.2 per cent; open forest 9.14 per cent; and mangrove 0.14 per cent). According to the State of Forest Report (2015), the dense forest cover has increased by 3,775 sq km since 2013. However, this apparent increase in the forest cover is due to conservation measures, management interventions and plantation, etc., by different agencies.
  • 11. Steps to prevent deforestation 1.Plant a Tree where you can. 2.Go paperless at home and in the office. 3.Buy recycled products and then recycle them again. 4.Buy certified wood products. ... 5.Support the products of companies that are committed to reducing deforestation. ... 6.Raise awareness in your circle and in your community.
  • 12. Water Resources Three-fourth of the earth’s surface is covered with water, but only a small proportion of it accounts for freshwater that can be put to use. This freshwater is mainly obtained from surface run off and ground water that is continually being renewed and recharged through the hydrological cycle. All water moves within the hydrological cycle ensuring that water is a renewable resource.
  • 13. WATER SCARCITYAND THE NEED FOR WATER CONSERVATIONAND MANAGEMENT Given the abundance and renewability of water, it is difficult to imagine that we may suffer from water scarcity. The moment we speak of water shortages, we immediately associate it with regions having low rainfall or those that are drought prone. We instantaneously visualise the deserts of Rajasthan and women balancing many ‘matkas’ (earthen pots) used for collecting and storing water and travelling long distances to get water. True, the availability of water resources varies over space and time, mainly due to the variations in seasonal and annual precipitation.
  • 14. STEPSTO PREVENTWATER SCARCITY 1.Sustainable water management. Improving water infrastructure must be a priority, as water conservation and efficiency are key components of sustainable water management. ... 2.Reclaimed water. ... 3.Pollution control & better sewage treatment. ... 4.Awareness & Education.
  • 15. SOIL AS A RESOURCE Soil is the most important renewable natural resource. It is the medium of plant growth and supports different types of living organisms on the earth. The soil is a living system. It takes millions of years to form soil upto a few cm in depth. Relief, parent rock or bed rock, climate, vegetation and other forms of life and time are important factors in the formation of soil. Various forces of nature such as change in temperature, actions of running water, wind and glaciers, activities of decomposers etc. contribute to the formation of soil.
  • 16. SOIL EROSION The denudation of the soil cover and subsequent washing down is described as soil erosion. The processes of soil formation and erosion, go on simultaneously and generally there is a balance between the two. Sometimes, this balance is disturbed due to human activities like deforestation, over-grazing, construction and mining etc., while natural forces like wind, glacier and water lead to soil erosion. The running water cuts through the clayey soils and makes deep channels as gullies. The land becomes unfit for cultivation and is known as bad land. In the Chambal basin such lands are called ravines. Sometimes water flows as a sheet over large areas down a slope.
  • 17. SOIL CONVERSATION Ploughing along the contour lines can decelerate the flow of water down the slopes. This is called contour ploughing. Steps can be cut out on the slopes making terraces. Terrace cultivation restricts erosion. Western and central Himalayas have well developed terrace farming. Large fields can be divided into strips. Strips of grass are left to grow between the crops. This breaks up the force of the wind. This method is known as strip cropping. Planting lines of trees to create shelter also works in a similar way. Rows of such trees are called shelter belts. These shelter belts have contributed significantly to the stabilisation of sand dunes and in stabilising the desert in western India.
