Matter can exist in three states - solid, liquid, and gas. Solids have a definite volume and shape with particles packed tightly together and unable to flow or be compressed. Liquids have a definite volume but no fixed shape as particles are able to flow over one another while maintaining contact. Gases have no definite volume or shape as particles are spaced far apart and able to flow and be compressed.
