Alpacas are grazing animals related to llamas but smaller, with banana-shaped ears. They live in herds and prefer cooler climates, eating grass and hay. While they rarely spit at people, alpacas will spit at each other as a form of defense, regurgitating foul-smelling cud. As herd animals, alpacas can become stressed if separated from their companions.
