Plate tectonics describes the large-scale motions of the Earth's seven major tectonic plates and many smaller plates. Hot magma rises from the mantle at mid-ocean ridges, pushing the plates apart and causing earthquakes along fractures. The primary factors driving plate movements are thermal convection in the Earth's interior, ridge push from plates sliding down rising magma at mid-ocean ridges, and slab pull as the weight of subducting plates sinks into the mantle at trenches.
