Sustainability in Packaging: Insight from Big Ideas 2017Amcor
Creating a circular economy is challenging, and recycling is key to success. Based on insights from Big Ideas 2017, our SlideShare explains why choosing more Sustainable Packaging should be a top priority for your business.
Packaging serves four main purposes: protection, safety, branding, and usability. It protects products from damage during transport and storage, ensures safety by containing important information and preventing harmful substances from transferring to contents, enhances branding through distinctive designs that attract customers, and provides convenient and sustainable packaging options that meet consumer needs and preferences. Customers now consider the environmental impact of packaging materials and their reusability and recyclability.
Reckitt Benckiser is a global consumer goods company that produces health, hygiene, and home products. The presentation discusses sustainability in packaging and identifies key factors to consider. It emphasizes the importance of aligning sustainability goals with customer wants, maximizing sustainable materials, and communicating sustainability efforts to motivate recycling. Case studies on Vanish powder packaging compare options like rigid tubs to flexible pouches based on factors such as materials used, recycling rates, production efficiency, transport, and more.

A Review on Recent Advances of Packaging in Food IndustryPriyankaKilaniya
Effective food packaging provides number of purposes. It functions as a container to hold and transport the food product, as well as a barrier to protect the food from outside contamination such as water, light, odours, bacteria, dust, and mechanical damage by maintaining the food quality. The package may also include barriers to keep the product's moisture content or gas composition consistent. Furthermore, convenience is vital role in packaging, and the desire for quick opening, dispensing, and resealing packages that maintain product quality until fully consumed is increasing. To facilitate trading, encourage sales, and inform on content and nutritional attributes, the packaging must be communicative. For storage of food there is huge scope for modified atmosphere packaging, intelligent packaging, active packaging, and controlled atmosphere packaging. Active packaging has a variety of uses, including carbon dioxide absorbers and emitters, oxygen scavengers, antimicrobials, and moisture control agents. Smart packaging is another term for intelligent packaging. Edible packaging, self-cooling and self-heating packaging, micro packaging, and water-soluble packaging are some of the advancements in package material.

products such as our ready for recycling PE-based
Skin, PE-based Shrink, our PP-based rigid films
or our new range of OPP lidding and flow wrap
films featuring all typical options such as peel
or reclose. Additionally, we have invested in new
developments such as PE- or PP-based shrink
bags and PP flexible film.
Increasing research into and usage of flexible
mono and polyolefin materials has led to important
advances in the field of recycling and creating a
circular economy. Recycling multi-material films
results in heterogeneous materials that are more
difficult to reuse for the manufacture of new
products. For this reason our R&D department
is focused on accelerating the development of
recyclable films without compromising on the
other important functions that packaging needs
to perform: preserving and protecting products
and optimising shelf life.
OUR 5R APPROACH
ENABLES A 360-DEGREE
VIEW OF
SUSTAINABILITY.
PACKAGING NEEDS TO FULFIL A
WIDE RANGE OF REQUIREMENTS
Protect and preserve: It should protect the
product against damage, dirt, light and oxygen.
It should allow products to be transported
and stored in safety. Good protection reduces
food wastage.
Attract and sell: Packaging needs to be attrac-
tive to consumers as well as providing important
information such as product usage, ingredients,
shelf life and disposal of packaging.
Innovate and safeguard: Technical innovation
means that packaging material can be reduced,
recycled or replaced. It involves taking respon
sibility for the future of our planet to find
renewable resources and making the necessary
changes throughout the packaging life cycle.

3. RReplace
Underpinning the other pillars of our 5R sustainability policy is our pledge
to replace all non-recyclable materials with recyclable ones.
This includes:
• Replacing plastics with environmentally friendly
materials such as E-base and DanaFibre.
• Replacing aluminium foil with alternative
metalised solutions.
• Replacing existing materials with new solutions
such as Ultra-Thin, Recycable and DanaFibre,
and replacing PS with PP.
• Replacing existing packaging types with flexible
solutions such as flow pack, stand up pouches
and thermoforming.
At Schur, sustainability means investing in
continuous development to find solutions
that keep our planet’s ecosystems in balance.

Our ultra-thin lightweight films
require less material. This ensures
less storage space which in turn
leads to fewer transport loads. It
enables more efficient use of fuel,
electricity and water, resulting again
in less raw material being used
and a lowering of CO2
emissions.
Renewal
The resources of our planet are
finite. Sustainability implies that
we keep a balance in our planet’s
ecosystems – we allow them to
regenerate at the same or a
higher rate than the rate at which
we remove materials from that
system. Therefore, we need to
focus on raw materials that do
not exploit our planet. One exam-
ple of this is using FSC-certified
paper. Furthermore, when Schur
Flexibles developed products such
as DanaFibre we replaced fossile
raw materials with renewable
ones. Constant RD has allowed
us to keep innovating in this field.
Our renewable portfolio now
includes paper packaging, waxed
paper, PE from renewable re-
sources (bioethanol), DanaFibre
and sugar-based films.
Reduction
The best way to reduce waste is not to produce any. Therefore we try
to develop the thinnest possible structures for our films, always making
sure that product safety is not jeopardised. We currently hold the title
of the world’s thinnest laminate films (Super-Thin) and are among the
best with BarrierTop X 35, VACUshrink FM 45 or VACUshrink CP55HT.
At Schur Flexibles we are striving to
achieve a carbon-neutral footprint.

WE WILL DO EVERYTHING
IN OUR POWER TO SUPPORT
OUR CUSTOMERS
AND SAFEGUARD OUR PLANET.
Responsibility
There are certain non-ecological elements in the
flexibles packaging production that, as yet, cannot
be avoided. Our RD representatives are hard
at work to find solutions as quickly as possible.
Beyond this, every Schur Flexibles employee is
committed to responsible use of our resources,
starting with light and heating in offices and
moving on to the use of raw materials and waste
reduction in production.
The UN Brundtland Commission defined sustain-
ability as follows: “Sustainable development is
development that meets the needs of the present
without compromising the ability of future gener-
ations to meet their own needs.”
At Schur Flexibles we act in accordance
with this holistic vision of sustainability:
In society we assume responsibility for our employ
ees, our customers and for society as a whole. We
cooperate with social initiatives, scientific institu-
tions, universities, municipalities, authorities and
government organisations. We respect human
rights and condemn child labour.
In the environment we strive to permanently
reduce our material consumption and optimise
our production processes. We will accelerate
the use of recycled raw materials as much
as possible. We will optimise existing and imple-
ment new processes in order to reduce both
waste and energy consumption.
In business we strive to establish long-term,
sustainable partnerships with our customers and
suppliers. We support the use of innovative new
raw materials, intelligent technologies and sus-
tainable equipment.
SUPPORTING OUR CUSTOMERS
– THE IMPORTANCE OF RD
We work hand in hand with our customers to
develop concepts that will help their business
and the environment. Furthermore, by 2030
clear EU-wide targets for a circular economy
and a reduction of waste will come into effect.
This includes:
• A common EU target
for recycling 70 % of
packaging waste
• Incentives for produ-
cers to put greener
products on the market
and support recovery
and recycling schemes
Together with our customers and our state-of-
the-art research centres in Finland, Germany
and Denmark we continuously work to achieve
greater sustainability and ensure that all EU tar-
gets are met by 2025. We offer our customers
collaborative processes, advice and research to
address their challenges every step of the way.
One example of this is our PackScience Center
in Kempten, Germany, where customers are
invited to participate in the development pro-
cess. We provide the opportunity of hands-on
collaboration to solve future challenges. Pack-
ages can be designed and tested; packaging
processes simulated and optimised. Addition-
al services that we offer include the manufac-
turing of mock-ups, tool design, laboratory
analyses and specialised training workshops.
Sustainability concerns us all and at Schur
Flexibles we will do everything in our power
to support our customers and safeguard our
planet.

for sustainable
solutions
5. Sustainable packaging
saves food and resources
On the journey from field to store
shelves to consumers’ homes,
products undergo manufacturing
and transportation processes
that use a wide range of environ-
mental resources. Packaging only
accounts for around 3% of these
resources, but packaging can make
all the difference to ensuring that
the other 97% are not wasted.
At Schur Flexibles we understand
that responsible and sustainable
packaging guarantees a product’s
integrity and extends shelf life.
Food that stays fresh longer leads
to a reduction in food waste, which
in turn reduces wastage of all
the other resources that went
into making the final product.
Pharmaceutical products need
packaging that protects them
from contamination to remain
intact for as long as possible,
thus also leading to a reduction
in waste.
Product sustainability is enhanced
by the development of packaging
that uses less material while still
providing the protective barriers
that maintain product quality. Our
films and packaging solutions are
designed to provide maximum
protection and ensure minimal
environmental impact.
Sustainable solutions
from one source
With our comprehensive range
of packaging perfectly tailored
to individual requirements, we
offer our customers the conven
ience of complete solutions from
a single provider. Naturally, this
also includes our support in all
aspects of sustainability. We are
at your side to advise, develop
concepts and implement proces
ses. Through our rethink initiative
we work hand in hand with our
clients to analyse their portfolio
and make it more sustainable.
Our sustainability
strategy
We are striving to overachieve
the EU sustainability goals by
reducing the environmental
impact of all aspects of flexible
packaging from producer to
retailer to consumer.
By 2025 the vast majority of
our products will be
• recyclable,
• made from renewable
resources or
• the best in the market in
raw material consumption.
Our sustainability values
We take our environmental
responsibility seriously. Under-
lining our commitment is our
membership of two important

6. CEFLEX is the collaborative project of a European
consortium of companies representing the entire
value chain of flexible packaging. We are currently
developing recycling guidelines and processes, as
well as a post-consumer recycling infrastructure
across Europe.
SAVE FOOD is an initiative that aims to drive inno-
vation and generate solutions to stop the waste of
food. One third of all food is either wasted or lost
– an amount that would meet global food needs.
SAVE FOOD promotes dialogue and debate with all
elements of the food value chain. We aim to change
attitudes and raise awareness of sustainable thinking.
