3. What is the Gratnells system?
All the storage areas in a school have a specially designed compatible set of four trays, with furniture designed for them.
The furniture either takes the trays on shelves (which restricts the depth of trays) or with tray runners, so that any depth of tray can be fitted.

Gratnells manufactures square tube storage frames, under- bench units and trolleys in 25mm square tube.
The tube is slotted at 25mm intervals to give maximum adjustment according to the height of the contents.

23. Summary
By standardising the trays throughout the schools, it is easy to tender.
Manufacturers can gear up specifications, resulting in overall lower prices.
This has been proven in that all the UK’s 33,000 schools have used this standard width of trays since 1960 (52 years).
The external width of the tray is 312mm x 427/433mm front to back.
Four depths: 75mm, 150mm, 225mm, and 300mm, with all storage based around this standard width.

Gratnells manufactures all the trays, fittings, plastic frames and metalwork in their 10,000m2 factory in Harlow, Essex, UK.
