12. Jaguars are not specialized with their food, but eat almost anything they get: big and small
mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and livestock. It is an ambush predator. When hunting, they usually
try to secretly get very close to the prey, and then the jaguar suddenly jumps at it and throws it
down. Jaguars kill their prey in an unusual way: they bite directly through the skull between the
ears and into the brain.
The jaguar is largely a solitary, opportunistic, stalk-and-ambush predator at the top of the food
chain (an apex predator).
The jaguar is a near threatened species and its numbers are declining. Threats include loss and
fragmentation of habitat. While international trade in jaguars or their parts is prohibited, the cat is
still frequently killed by humans, particularly in conflicts with ranchers and farmers in South
America. In Argentina, the jaguar is in critical condition, only living in some areas in Misiones.
12
13. LION
They are mammals that belong to the order of
carnivores.
Male lions usually weigh 159 to 250 kilograms
(350 to 550 pounds) . But they can weigh more.
It is the only cat with a mane.
Lions are mostly found in Africa and in reserve in
India. They can live in cool areas, very hot areas
or in thick forests. This cat lives in virtually every
type of habitat. The African continent is absent
inside the rainforests, but Asians is where they
live. Except for the interior of the Sahara Desert,
they can be found in much of Africa, provided
they have not been killed in that region.
They live for 10to/14 years when they are in the
wild. When they are captured, they can live
longer than 20 years. They usually live in the
savanna and grass land, though they sometimes
live in bushes and forests.
The lion is the second largest member of the cat
family that lives in Africa. It hunts many animals,
for example, gnus and antelopes, and eats a lot
of meat.
Lions live in groups that are called prides; ten to
forty lions may live in a pride. Each pride has a
home area that is called its territory.
Most of the food consists of large mammals,
zebras, buffalo, antelope, etc., but they also hunt
small mammals, birds and reptiles. They are also
scavengers.
Hunting: Lions are most active at night, it is
during this time that most of the hunts happen.
During daylight hours also made some
persecution (as long as the occasion permits),
these are the ones that usually are achieved
documented. But the night world in the African
grasslands is extremely active.
Natural enemies: Hyenas attack those lions falling
wounded, sick or old. They also try to attack
females and cubs. When there is a female alone
against a pack of hyenas, the lioness usually
loses. With healthy lion, it is a different story and
one or more of the hyenas that do not flee may
be killed. It is also constantly stealing food from
hyenas and lions. Crocodiles might be dangerous
too, even for an adult lion.
