Scaling Drupal in AWS Using AutoScaling, Cloudformation, RDS and moreDropsolid
Given at DrupalJam 2015 - Netherlands.
This presentation explains some of the fundamental issues you have to overcome when designing software for distributed systems that can fail. Also called "Cloud" in other terminologies. The presentation uses AWS components to explain these fundamentals and uses Drupal as the example application. The example is by no means perfect, but gives you a good idea how to design your system from scratch.
Technologies used:
Cloudformation
EC2 Instances
RDS MySQL Database
Elastic Load Balancer
ElastiCache (Memcache)
Example can be found here:
https://gist.github.com/nickveenhof/601c5dc1b76ff26896bf
Take note that the example does not include components such as VPC for simplicity, but it is highly recommended to add this.

(ARC311) Extreme Availability for Mission-Critical Applications | AWS re:Inve...Amazon Web Services
More and more businesses are deploying their mission-critical applications on AWS, and one of their concerns is how to improve the availability of their services, going beyond traditional availability concepts. In this session, you will learn how to architect different layers of your application―beginning with an extremely available front-end layer with Amazon EC2, Elastic Load Balancing, and Auto Scaling, and going all the way to a protected multitiered information layer, including cross-region replicas for relational and NoSQL databases. The concepts that we will share, using services like Amazon RDS, Amazon DynamoDB, and Amazon Route 53, will provide a framework you can use to keep your application running even with multiple failures. Additionally, you will hear from Magazine Luiza, in an interactive session, on how they run a large e-commerce application with a multiregion architecture using a combination of features and services from AWS to achieve extreme availability.

AWS re:Invent 2016: Host a massively scalable website around the world for a ...Amazon Web Services
A worldwide dynamic website infrastructure at the cost and simplicity of a static deployment was once an unachievable dream. That’s no longer the case with the tools and services that AWS offers like Amazon CloudFront, Amazon S3, Amazon API Gateway and AWS Lambda. During this session we will discuss a DevOps approach to managing your code repositories, code quality, continuous integration and deployments. We discuss some static website generators such as mkdocs, Jekyll, and middleman for building knowledge bases, blogs and websites in a serverless architecture.
Featuring an ideal use case for implementing a serverless architecture combining Amazon CloudFront, Amazon S3 and Amazon API Gateway; we explore how we deployed a massively scaled web application for a fraction of the cost of traditional dynamic websites leveraging a world-wide CDN. Going serverless significantly reduced operational costs and complexity because the infrastructure scales on demand without having to manually provision new servers on the ready. Finally, we share the lessons learned and the advantages of this move, leveraging Cloudnexa’s vNOC product which allows for a faster, more affordable user experience. Session sponsored by Cloudnexa.

Cloud based infrastructure for massive scale, without massive costsElmer Thomas
Cloud based services have enabled companies in 2012 to grow their customer base exponentially, in a matter of months. Even the smallest of startup teams can reach massive scale, while maintaining reasonable costs. Recent examples of this phenomena include Quora, Instagram and Pinterest. 10 years ago, without the benefits of cloud-based infrastructure services, how would these have companies fared?
In this session, we will explore the new horizons achievable as a result of the tools available to today's developers and discuss how startups can leverage the latest and greatest technologies to operate lean and build successful, sustainable businesses.
Docker and AWS have been working together to improve the Docker experience you already know and love. Deploying from Docker straight to AWS with your existing workflow has never been easier. Developers can use Docker Compose and Docker Desktop to deploy applications on Amazon ECS on AWS Fargate. This new functionality streamlines the process of deploying and managing containers in AWS from a local development environment running Docker. Join us for a hands-on walk through of how you can get started today.
Amazon Web Services provides startups with the low cost, easy to use infrastructure needed to scale and grow any size business. Attend this session and learn how to migrate your startup to AWS and make the most out of the platform.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
