Ask about the problem
Habit of Mind:
Questioning means asking
to learn something new.

Problem posing is finding
problems to solve
Habit of Mind Statements:
I will ask questions.
I will understand the problem.
I will find a problem to solve.

Essential Question:
How are structures
and functions
related?
Essential Question Thoughts:
How are body parts connected
and work together?
Pretest:
Instructions: Look at the animal pictures. Write the name
of the body part.

Topic 2: Animal Body Parts
Eyes
The eye is the organ of
sight. Eyes enable
people to perform daily
tasks and to learn about
the world that surrounds
them.
Topic 2: Animal Body Parts
Tongue
The primary function of the
tongue is to taste food.
Topic 2: Animal Body Parts
Nose
The nose is an important
organ, or body part, for
breathing and smelling. The
two openings in the nose are
called nostrils. Many other
animals also have a nose.
Topic 2: Animal Body Parts
Ears
Ears are the organs, or body
parts, in humans and many
other animals that allow them
to hear. Ears work by picking
up vibrations (tiny back-and-
forth movements), usually in
the air or water.
Topic 2: Animal Body Parts
Trunk
The elephant's trunk is an
extension of the upper lip
and nose. It functions for
grasping, breathing, feeding,
dusting, smelling, drinking,
lifting, sound
production/communication,
defense/protection, and
sensing.
Topic 2: Animal Body Parts
The long hairs on a cat’s
face are called
whiskers. They use their
whiskers to feel what is
around them. They can
tell whether they can fit
into a space by using
their whiskers.
Topic 2: Animal Body Parts
Fur
Some animals have
fur to keep them
warm and dry. They
shed their fur
throughout the year.
Topic 2: Animal Body Parts
Gill Covers
Fish breathe oxygen
through their gills.
They take in the
oxygen from the
water. The gill covers
protect the gills.
Topic 2: Animal Body Parts
Fin
a thin, flat body part of
a fish and certain other
water animals which is
used for swimming or
balance. The fish's fins
help it travel through
the water.
Topic 2: Animal Body Parts
Webbed Feet
Some animals have
webbed feet to help
them swim.
Topic 2: Animal Body Parts
Shell
A tortoise’s shell
protects its soft inner
body from attack or
injury.
Topic 2: Animal Body Parts
Feathers
Feathers allow birds to
fly, but they also help
them show off, blend in,
stay warm, and keep
dry.
Topic 2: Animal Body Parts
Wings
A wing is part of an
animal that allows it to
fly.
Topic 2: Animal Body Parts
Beaks
A beak is used for
eating, preening,
manipulating objects,
killing prey, fighting,
probing for food,
courtship, and feeding
young.
Topic 2: Animal Body Parts
Fish and sea mammals use their tail fins for steering and to propel
them through the water.
Grazing animals such as elephants, zebras and giraffes have long,
thin tails with a tuft of hair on the end. These tails function like
built-in fly swatters that enable the animals to protect themselve
from biting insects.
Alligators store fat in their tails, and foxes use their bushy tails like a
blanket to keep them warm in the winter.
A dominant male hippopotamus uses his tail like a propeller to
spreadhis feces (poop) around so other males don’t try to horn in on
his territory.
Monkeys and other primates Tails are designed to help ananimal
with balance as it swings, climbs and jumps through its environment.
A tail can also grab objects and has the ability to
act like an extra arm.
Birds use their tail feathers for steering.
Tail
Topic 2: Animal Body Parts
Legs
Legs support
an animal's
body and
allow it to
get around.
