State of the Map Asia (SotM-Asia) is the annual regional conference of OpenStreetMap (OSM) organized by OSM communities in Asia. First SotM-Asia was organized in Jakarta, Indonesia in 2015, and the second was organized in Manila, Philippines in 2016. This year’s conference, third in the series, was organized in Kathmandu, Nepal on September 23 – 24, 2017 at Park Village Resort, Budhanilkantha, Kathmandu, Nepal. We brought nearly 200 Open Mapping enthusiasts from Asia and beyond to this year’s SotM-Asia. The event provided an opportunity to share knowledge and experience among mappers; expand their network; and generate ideas to expand map coverage and effective use of OSM data in Asian continent. We chose ‘from creation to use of OSM data’ as the theme of this year’s conference, emphasizing on the effective use of OSM data. We also brought together a government panel from four different countries in this year’s SotM-Asia. We believe this event will deepen the bond and enhance collaboration among OSM communities across Asia. More information about the conference can be found on: http://stateofthemap.asia.

Hennepin County in Minnesota used graph databases to track the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic by integrating multiple non-traditional data sources in real-time, such as Google search trends, transportation data, and credit card spending. They built a Neo4j graph to relate this diverse data and generate a Power BI dashboard for interpreting the complex information and reacting quickly as the situation changed. The graph provided flexibility and easier understanding of relationships that supported public health decision-making during the pandemic response.

The document describes the initiation and work of AQUA-BRIDGE (A-B), an organization that brings clean water to communities using appropriate technology integrated with a web-based ICT platform. A-B was started in 2011 by Peter K. Kang while he was a PhD student studying porous media flow. A-B's first project was in Kiwalani, Tanzania, where they tested water quality, built trust with the community, and installed biosand filters. To address limitations of not having ongoing community data, A-B developed a mobile data collection system and web platform. This allows remote monitoring of filter performance, water quality, and community needs to make data-driven decisions.

ENACTS is a program that aims to improve the availability, access, and use of climate information in several African countries. It works with national meteorological services to quality control and reconstruct climate datasets using station, satellite, and reanalysis data. Major outputs include over 30-year climate time series datasets, installation of an online data library, and tools for generating customized climate monitoring and forecast information products. This document summarizes a team's approach to predicting which items users might be interested in using a recommendation system. It describes extracting features from user and item metadata to train an SVM model, but this was too computationally expensive. Instead, the team used logistic regression with stochastic gradient descent. They tested features like age, gender and network similarities. Their combined model outperformed random prediction baselines on the KDD Cup 2012 Track 1 dataset.

In little more than a decade the State has gone from four operating mines to more than 20 and is rated Australia’s second most popular exploration destination.

South Australia is now a leader in the exploration for next generation energy sources with companies such as Santos and BP leading the charge, while initiatives such as the Government’s Copper Strategy – designed to treble annual copper production to 1 mtpa – is set to establish the State as one of the world’s premier producers of the red metal.
In the energy space, uranium and nuclear energy is another area of keen interest, with the South Australian Government initiating a Royal Commission into Participation in the Nuclear Fuel Cycle in 2016.
The State has become synonymous with innovation, cutting-edge development and a remarkable rate of discovery. From uranium prospects, to geothermal energy and the buoyant hydrocarbons sector, South Australia is now a leader in the exploration for next generation energy sources.
With full support from the Department of State Development, the South Australian Resources and Energy Investment Conference will continue to showcase this burgeoning sector in 2017. From copper plays in the Gawler Craton, to iron ore and graphite developments on the Eyre Peninsula and the emergence of the State as a new hydrocarbon frontier, South Australia’s resources potential is at last being fully recognised.
The conference will feature the success stories and emerging players in the State from both minerals and oil and gas and will also tackle thorny industry issues such as infrastructure, corporate social responsibility and the future of the Woomera Prohibited Area.

This document summarizes a workshop on the role of crisis informatics in disaster management focusing on the 2015 Nepal earthquake. It discusses how OpenStreetMap (OSM) and the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) coordinated the mapping response. Key points include: HOT coordinated hundreds of mappers and partners to map roads, villages, and IDP camps within days; imagery from various providers was critical to map changes; over 17 million edits were made in 6 weeks, more than a whole year of mapping for Ebola; lessons include the need for improved validation and developing workflows with assessment organizations.

NVDNP Annual Meeting in Carson City, NV
The NVDNP Annual Meeting provided updates on the project's progress and changes to its workflow. The project hired new staff and a new digitization vendor. It reworked its workflow to streamline collaboration and submitted batches to the LC. It achieved 25,000 pages digitized so far and aims for 100,000 by August 2018. The meeting also discussed planned additions to the redesigned website like Nevada history essays and an interactive map of historic newspapers. Outreach efforts through social media, tutorials and community events were reviewed to increase awareness of digitized Nevada newspapers.

This document summarizes a project that uses the Open Data Kit (ODK) for data collection with farmers on bean pest and disease management. The project aims to guide pest and disease management efforts and increase technology adoption. It was previously hindered by issues like decentralized data, costly collection methods, and errors. The project now pilots ODK, which allows simultaneous digitized collection and aggregation of data, including multimedia. This reduces costs and improves quality. Lessons learned include the importance of training, testing the tool, and using a suitable smartphone. Future research will compare ODK to paper methods to address participants' concerns about cloud data loss.
Crowd sourcing rangeland vegetation conditions
Crowdsourcing is being used to collect rangeland vegetation condition data in remote areas of northern Kenya. Local pastoralists are equipped with smartphones to submit geolocated surveys on forage levels, distance to water, and livestock presence. Over 75 days, 112 participants submitted around 63,000 observations. Field experiments tested incentivizing uniform spatial data distribution and providing feedback to improve data quality. Preliminary results found mobile technology can effectively crowdsource data in remote areas, and monitoring and feedback increased participation rates and response to incentives. Moving forward, the data will be integrated with remote sensing to create near real-time vegetation maps and test dynamic incentives to improve model accuracy.

This document describes an agriculture assistance project that aims to help farmers analyze soil fertility levels through an NPK-based soil analysis. The project will collect NPK values from soil testing reports and provide analysis to determine suitable crops and fertilizer requirements. It will be developed as a web application to allow many farmer teams across India to access timely information on crops, climate, harvesting, and more. The project aims to improve soil quality and increase crop yields while reducing farming expenses.

GFW_Deforestation Exposed Using High Resolution Satellite Imagery to Investig...
Thanks to the Norwegian Government, Norway’s International Climate & Forests Initiative (NICFI) launched their Satellite Data Program in September 2020 to power projects working to reduce and reverse tropical forest loss. Under this program Global Forest Watch (GFW) users can access Planet’s high-resolution, analysis-ready mosaics of the world’s tropics to reduce and reverse deforestation, combat climate change and more.
During this webinar, we will provide an overview of the satellite imagery and resources available on GFW. We will be joined by program leads from Kongsberg Satellite Services (KSAT) along with partners from Planet to share how this satellite imagery can help users investigate what’s happening in the world’s forests.
We will also highlight voices from local advocacy groups and media outlets. Don’t miss presentations from Mighty Earth, Reporter Brasil and SOS Orinoco on how they use this imagery in their investigations to expose unauthorized deforestation.

Big App Challenge 2014 Post Mortem Report
1) The Big App Challenge saw strong registration and participation numbers, totaling 225 registrations by the deadline.
2) The challenge included an ideation phase with workshops to help generate ideas, a 4-week development period, and finals presentation where winners were announced.
3) The top three winning teams developed apps around dengue outbreak prediction and water management, using techniques like predictive modeling, visualization, and open data.

This document discusses next generation software and hardware for plant phenotyping and ecosystem monitoring. It outlines challenges such as processing and managing large datasets, and optimizing open data sharing. Emerging tools discussed for high resolution field phenotyping include gigapixel imaging, drones, LiDAR, virtual/augmented reality, and sensor networks. A case study is presented of a sensor array installed at the Australian National Arboretum to monitor the environment, tree growth phenotypes, and genotypes over time at high precision across the landscape. The goal is to address fundamental ecological questions by capturing data at finer spatial and temporal resolutions than previously possible.

This document summarizes a project that uses the Open Data Kit (ODK) for data collection with farmers on bean pest and disease management. Crowd sourcing rangeland vegetation conditions
Crowdsourcing is being used to collect rangeland vegetation condition data in remote areas of northern Kenya. Local pastoralists are equipped with smartphones to submit geolocated surveys on forage levels, distance to water, and livestock presence. Over 75 days, 112 participants submitted around 63,000 observations. Field experiments tested incentivizing uniform spatial data distribution and providing feedback to improve data quality. Preliminary results found mobile technology can effectively crowdsource data in remote areas, and monitoring and feedback increased participation rates and response to incentives. Moving forward, the data will be integrated with remote sensing to create near real-time vegetation maps and test dynamic incentives to improve model accuracy.

This document describes an agriculture assistance project that aims to help farmers analyze soil fertility levels through an NPK-based soil analysis. The project will collect NPK values from soil testing reports and provide analysis to determine suitable crops and fertilizer requirements. It will be developed as a web application to allow many farmer teams across India to access timely information on crops, climate, harvesting, and more. The project aims to improve soil quality and increase crop yields while reducing farming expenses.

Thanks to the Norwegian Government, Norway’s International Climate & Forests Initiative (NICFI) launched their Satellite Data Program in September 2020 to power projects working to reduce and reverse tropical forest loss. Under this program Global Forest Watch (GFW) users can access Planet’s high-resolution, analysis-ready mosaics of the world’s tropics to reduce and reverse deforestation, combat climate change and more.
During this webinar, we will provide an overview of the satellite imagery and resources available on GFW. We will be joined by program leads from Kongsberg Satellite Services (KSAT) along with partners from Planet to share how this satellite imagery can help users investigate what’s happening in the world’s forests.
We will also highlight voices from local advocacy groups and media outlets. Don’t miss presentations from Mighty Earth, Reporter Brasil and SOS Orinoco on how they use this imagery in their investigations to expose unauthorized deforestation.

2) The challenge included an ideation phase with workshops to help generate ideas, a 4-week development period, and finals presentation where winners were announced.
3) The top three winning teams developed apps around dengue outbreak prediction and water management, using techniques like predictive modeling, visualization, and open data.

It outlines challenges such as processing and managing large datasets, and optimizing open data sharing. Emerging tools discussed for high resolution field phenotyping include gigapixel imaging, drones, LiDAR, virtual/augmented reality, and sensor networks. A case study is presented of a sensor array installed at the Australian National Arboretum to monitor the environment, tree growth phenotypes, and genotypes over time at high precision across the landscape. The goal is to address fundamental ecological questions by capturing data at finer spatial and temporal resolutions than previously possible.

This document outlines a mapping strategy to develop OpenStreetMap (OSM) data for Surabaya and DKI Jakarta, Indonesia. The strategy involves mapping lifeline infrastructure and administrative boundaries over multiple stages from October 2016 to October 2017. Field surveys are conducted using OpenMapKit and ODK Collect to collect detailed attribute data, which is quality assured and uploaded to OSM. Challenges encountered include accurate GPS on smartphones and heavy rain during surveys. This document discusses completeness assessment of maps. It defines completeness as how well map details reflect the real world. Completeness is important to identify areas for focus editing and understand community health. The document outlines prior work assessing 80 cities and computing details for 1 billion map tiles worldwide. It proposes establishing a "gold standard" of highly complete tiles rated by multiple mappers to measure quality in other datasets and regions. Early findings show dense tiles often have higher completeness, but some less dense tiles are also high quality, so completeness depends on multiple complex factors. State of the Map Asia (SotM-Asia) is the annual regional conference of OpenStreetMap (OSM) organized by OSM communities in Asia. First SotM-Asia was organized in Jakarta, Indonesia in 2015, and the second was organized in Manila, Philippines in 2016. This year’s conference, third in the series, was organized in Kathmandu, Nepal on September 23 – 24, 2017 at Park Village Resort, Budhanilkantha, Kathmandu, Nepal.
We brought nearly 200 Open Mapping enthusiasts from Asia and beyond to this year’s SotM-Asia. The event provided an opportunity to share knowledge and experience among mappers; expand their network; and generate ideas to expand map coverage and effective use of OSM data in Asian continent. We chose ‘from creation to use of OSM data’ as the theme of this year’s conference, emphasizing on the effective use of OSM data. We also brought together a government panel from four different countries in this year’s SotM-Asia. We believe this event will deepen the bond and enhance collaboration among OSM communities across Asia.

In response to the urgency and scale required to effectively address climate change, open source solutions offer significant potential for driving innovation and progress. Currently, there is a growing demand for standardization and interoperability in energy data and modeling. Open source standards and specifications within the energy sector can also alleviate challenges associated with data fragmentation, transparency, and accessibility. At the same time, it is crucial to consider privacy and security concerns throughout the development of open source platforms.
This webinar will delve into the motivations behind establishing LF Energy’s Carbon Data Specification Consortium. It will provide an overview of the draft specifications and the ongoing progress made by the respective working groups.
Three primary specifications will be discussed:
-Discovery and client registration, emphasizing transparent processes and secure and private access
-Customer data, centering around customer tariffs, bills, energy usage, and full consumption disclosure
-Power systems data, focusing on grid data, inclusive of transmission and distribution networks, generation, intergrid power flows, and market settlement data

Imagine an IoT processing system that is already quite mature and production-ready and for which client coverage is growing and scaling and performance aspects are life and death questions. The system has Redis, MongoDB, and stream processing based on ksqldb. In this talk, firstly, we will analyze scaling approaches and then select the proper ones for our system.
From Natural Language to Structured Solr Queries using LLMs
This talk draws on experimentation to enable AI applications with Solr. One important use case is to use AI for better accessibility and discoverability of the data: while User eXperience techniques, lexical search improvements, and data harmonization can take organizations to a good level of accessibility, a structural (or “cognitive” gap) remains between the data user needs and the data producer constraints.
That is where AI – and most importantly, Natural Language Processing and Large Language Model techniques – could make a difference. This natural language, conversational engine could facilitate access and usage of the data leveraging the semantics of any data source.
The objective of the presentation is to propose a technical approach and a way forward to achieve this goal.
The key concept is to enable users to express their search queries in natural language, which the LLM then enriches, interprets, and translates into structured queries based on the Solr index’s metadata.
This approach leverages the LLM’s ability to understand the nuances of natural language and the structure of documents within Apache Solr.
The LLM acts as an intermediary agent, offering a transparent experience to users automatically and potentially uncovering relevant documents that conventional search methods might overlook. The presentation will include the results of this experimental work, lessons learned, best practices, and the scope of future work that should improve the approach and make it production-ready.

ScyllaDB Tablets: Rethinking Replication

In this keynote, ScyllaDB co-founder and CTO Avi Kivity explains the reason for this shift, provides a look at the implementation and roadmap, and shares how this shift benefits ScyllaDB users.
Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

How information systems are built or acquired puts information, which is what they should be about, in a secondary place. Our language adapted accordingly, and we no longer talk about information systems but applications. Applications evolved in a way to break data into diverse fragments, tightly coupled with applications and expensive to integrate.
