Savitribai Phule was born in 1831 in Maharashtra and was the first woman teacher in India. She fought for women's rights and equality and established the first girls' school in 1848 despite facing opposition from conservative forces. As the plague outbreak in 1897, she set up a hospital, treated patients herself, and eventually died from the disease on March 10, 1897. She remains an important social reformer who championed education for all and the rights of women, lower castes, and peasants in India.
