The sapphire industry recently ended a long period of depressed pricing and achieved US$936 million in revenue for wafer products in 2013. Recovery was helped by an increase in LED demand due to accelerating adoption in general lighting and a resilient LCD backlight market. But the saving grace was new consumer electronic (CE) applications: camera lens and fingerprint reader covers, mostly driven by Apple in 2013. Adoption at other vendors is progressing at a slower pace than anticipated in 2014. LG even reversed the trend with its flagship cellphone: its G2 model featured a sapphire lens cover but the G3 uses glass. However, we are optimistic for the mid-term with adoption increasing in Taiwan and China. In addition, new applications such as LED filaments could further increase sapphire consumption.
After almost 2 years of losses, the price of sapphire cores increased more than 50% in 2013. In Q2-2014, tier-1 sapphire vendors were finally selling at breakeven prices. However, we expect that prices will decrease again in Q4.

Established applications could generate US$366 million in 2018. But adoption of sapphire for smartphone display covers could generate an additional $1.3 to $2.6 billion depending on the adoption scenario.
Sapphire is currently used in some exotic, luxury phones. However the sapphire price reduction combined with the massive adoption of touch screen in smartphones have stimulated the interest of cell phone OEMS for this material. Crystal growth equipment manufacturer GTAT is leading the charge and recently created a lot of buzz around this application and on the OEM front. Apple is rumored to have conducted an extended due diligence.
Adoption of sapphire in mobile display covers represents the single largest opportunity discussed in this report. It remains, however, uncertain. We see 4 major challenges: technology, supply chain, cost and market acceptance. Crystal growth and finishing technologies still need to be optimized in order to guarantee stable performance and reduce the price gap with chemically strengthened glass like Corning's Gorilla. We estimate that the current cost of manufacturing a sapphire display cover is around $22 but could drop to $12 and ultimately below $10. It remains to be seen if the Bill Of Material increase vs. the $3 glass display cover will be absorbed by the OEM in exchange for increased market share or if the consumer will value the increased durability brought in by the sapphire cover and accept paying a premium.
It is difficult to predict the success of sapphire in this application. However, we expect that some OEMs will probe the market and introduce some models featuring sapphire by late 2013 - early 2014. Initial customer reaction will have a strong influence on the future of the technology. If successful, strong market traction could ease the funding for the more than $1.5 billion in capex needed to serve this industry and set up the supply chain to serve this application.
Glass cover lens manufacturers might seize the opportunity. Because of their vast existing glass finishing capacity that could be converted to process sapphire and their privileged access to leading smartphone OEMs, those companies could beat established sapphire finishing companies into this market. However, another scenario would see collaborations between some leading sapphire and cover lens makers in order to pool technical knowledge, capacity and customer access under the push of some smartphone OEMs.

Where insufficient water is available for a full irrigated cropping program on Sapphire
and Murragoran, unused irrigation acreage will be allocated to dryland farming
Cropping decisions will be based on soil moisture available with the planting window for
each variety and market prospects for those crops. The mix will be approximately

In favourable seasons, this would enable the fattening of an additional 15,000 cattle for
100 days, gaining 1.0 to 1.2 kg per head per day
The economics of crop fattening versus grain production will be evaluated before
committing to a forage cropping program
Silage reserve A silage reserve will be established at Woodlands to enable the Woodlands feedlot to
serve as a drought relief facility for the backgrounding operation;
It is intended to establish a reserve of 30,000 tonnes and silage over a three year period
requiring an average 500ha per year planted to graze and grain sorghum varieties
This tonnage is sufficient to feed the backgrounding cattle one year in four for 60 days
The silage reserve will be replenished as seasonal conditions permit

provided consulting services to an extensive range of clients
including Meat and Livestock Australia and Ray White Rural.
Ian McLean Business manager Ian has worked in various positions in government, industry affairs
and livestock production since graduating with a commerce degree
in 2005.
Arnel Corpuz Feedlot manager Arnel has managed feedlots in the Philippines and Queensland
since 2000. He has worked closely with Shane during this time
and has agreed to take over the management of the Sapphire
feedlot.
Alex Leonard Pastoral manager Alex has tertiary qualifications in animal science and has held
management and strategic planning roles with AACo as well as
running his own livestock contracting business. He will be based
at Woodlands with responsibility for that site’s cattle operations as
well as coordinating the other backgrounding properties’
