CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
We humans are social beings, no doubt about that! Our life and progress are
depended on each other. But on one level our needs, feelings and desires cause us to act
for our own benefit and without regard for the needs and benefit for others. But this
attitude will not take us forward.
For a sustained development we must join hands and co-operative with our fellow
beings and nature. Social service is one such opportunity through which we can help our
co-beings and work for the society.
Literal meaning of social service social service is a profession and academic
discipline that seeks to improve the quality of life and well-being of an individual, group
or community by intervening through research policy, crisis intervention, community
organizing, direct practice and teaching on behalf of those afflicted with poverty or any
real or perceived social injustices and violations of their civil liberties and human rights".
Social work is a professional and academic disciplining that seeks to improve the
quality of life and subjective well-being of individuals, groups, and communities through
research, policy, community organizing, direct practice, crisis intervention and teaching
for the benefit of those affected by social disadvantages such as poverty, mental and
physical illness or disability, and social injustice including violations of their civil
liberties and human rights.
A person who practices social work is called a social worker. In the UK, the title
social worker is protected by low and only those who have undergone approved training
at university either through a Bachelor or Master's degree in social work and are
registered with the appropriate regulatory boy (the health and care professions council in
England, the Scottish social services council, the care council for Wales, or the northern
Ireland social clear council may practice social work and be called a social worker, social
workers typically undergo a systematic set of training and qualifications that are distinct
from those of social care workers, care assistants or social care workers, who may
undertake a social work or but not necessarily have the qualifications of professional

skins of a qualified social worker. Currently, there are no formal qualifications or training
to practice as a social care assistant, care worker, social care assistant or career, but
mostly ancillary staffs are accountable to a qualified member of staff, such as a social
worker.
Research and the practice of social work focuses on area such as human
development sociologic, psychosocial, psychotherapy, counseling, social policy public
administration social programme evaluation and community development. Social workers
are organized into local, national, continental and international professional bodies. It is
an interdisciplinary field that incorporates theoretical basis from economics, education,
sociology, law medicine, philosophy, politics, anthropology, and psychology. Now
through MG University and our institution Kottayam Institute of Science and
Technology, we were given an opportunity to spare a little time from our busy schedule
and do something good for others. As per rule of total duration of 15 days compulsory
social service was mandatory to register for semester 8.

MODE OF WORK
3.1 Stage 1 (22-06-2017)
It was the first day of our social service program. We all arrived there at about 10
am. The staff and director of the trust and some priests from nearby churches were
welcomed us. We entered into that big family, like some new members. The priests were
come there to conduct the prayer programmes and motivation classes.
Since that was the first day we need to know about the each person in that family
including staffs. We started the interactive section with the members. The staffs helped
us to interact with them. Those persons in that trust were from different parts of the
country such as: some are from Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Mumbai and
also from Kerala itself. There were 90 people in that trust.
That trust provides the help for homeless and mentally retarded or sick people,
who were wandering alone on the public areas such as road sides, bus stands, railway
station etc. While we were interacting with each person a new experience is learned from
them. Not all persons are mentally sick, some are persons with good knowledge and
others were retrieved from the mental problems but they did not have a home to go, hats
why they were still there. But they are not at all sad. They continue their life with prayers,
meditation and the staffs provides a very good caring for them. The members really
satisfied with that, which was revealed from their interactions. Right time medicine,
prayer, caring etc. Bring Back them to the normal life.
With the assistance of the staff we continued the interaction with them. Some
were interested to talk to us but some were not interested as well. Because they were very
reserved personalities. But we tried to talk them and know them. It was a great experience
to interact with them and to learn different life experiences from the most experienced
persons. We were seen a new world through the aged but still glowing and young eyes.

Before we leaved there, we prepare some coffee and snacks for the staff and
members. And it was distributed by us. We put a graced small opening to our social
service scheme. We leaved there at about 3.30pm.
3.2 Stage2 (23-06-2017)
At about 10 am we all arrived at the Santhi Bhavan trust. That was bright day, so
we decided to start up the occasion with some good things which would lead spark of
light to our life. To make that day special and memorable we got some surprises and gifts
for the members in that family, some of us are good at singing and other for dancing and
the rest of us for encouragement. In that point we decided to conduct some songs,
dances, dramas and some funny games to increase the happiness of the person who did
not get that for a long period of life time.

We arranged the front area of the buildings for the programmers. The people were
really excited to watch and participate in that occasion. We started the programmes after
the usual prayer time in that trust. Meditation and prayer are the most important things
which help them to come back to the normal world apart from the allopathic medicines.
We also took part of that prayer. After the prayer we started the programmes. Mr Stanley
Jameson Mathew and Mr Jerin Mathews were the lead to drama team the members in that
trust also took in part. They also sang some good devotional songs. Some of them are
very intelligent; we really forgot that they are mentally retared people.
After the song some of our boys danced to some funny songs which was more
attracted and enjoyed by the people and staff around. The staff and the members also
were dance with the boys after the dancing section we conduct some funny games for the
members in that trust. Each and every person participates and enjoyed the games and
celebrations very well. At the end of the celebration cheerful, memorable day we gave
them some new and unused clothes and things from our home. To put temporary end of
the celebration we cut cakes and sweets are distributed over them. With some cherishful
moments we leaved the trust at about 3pm.

3.3 Stage-3 (24-06-2017 to 27-06-2017)
During those days we were interested in doing different works which are helpful
for them. The members were finished their breakfast. After the breakfast they must had
some medicines. We helped the staffs in the trust for that purpose. We gave the medicines
to the members. They had the medicines without any kind of negative approaches. After
the food and medicines the next and most important thing is the prayer. Prayer and
meditation was the most important two methods to motivate and help them to come back
to normal life.
The prayer really helped them for that. In that day there were two priests from
different church to conduct and lead the prayer program. We also took in part of the
prayer program. Ms. Sabu was a member of that family for the last 10 years. He had some
mental problems. But now he retrieved from all that problems because of the caring and
prayer. He went back to his home with his family members a one week before we arrived.
3.4 Stage 4 (28-06-2017 to 1-07-2017)
In those days we decided to cook food and give medical facilities for them. We
gave the medicine to the members after the daily prayer programme conducted there, we
were decided cook some food for that family. So we went to the kitchen with some food

items to cook in our hands. We brought the things needed to cook for that day. Staffs in
that trust also helped us. Some members also helped us. The trust authority did not
provide a shelter for the women because of their financial and geographical limitations.
We entered the cooking and interaction with the members and staffs. They were really
happy in those cheerful days.
We prepared the food for lunch. Some members were eagerly waiting for the food.
Everyone get into the dining hall. We distributed the food for everyone. They had the
food with much happiness. While seeing that we felt with satisfaction. After they had
their lunch, we also had out lunch from there. And after that we cleaned up all the plates
and things
We were planned to do something which was helpful for them. We decide to start
up a new thing. We arranged a small prayer meeting for them. We invited priest from
Anickadu church. He agreed with the meeting with much happiness. The priest reached
earlier to interact with the members and staffs.
We arranged the front area for the prayer meeting. It was started in right time.
Everyone in the trust stay calm and quiet while lessoning to the priest. We also took in
part of that prayer. Each and every one enjoyed the meeting very well. That day was a
feel of satisfaction and fulfil. The priest was also very happy and leaved there with
satisfactory mind
3.5 Stage 5 (2-07-2017 to 6-07-2017)
There is a scarcity of firewood at Shanthi Bhavan trust. We helped them to search
and find out firewood from nearby area. And we also put our effort in cutting the wood
into pieces. Mr. Monoj PR who is an employ at Shanthi Bhavan trust also helped in for
the same. The boys extend their helping hands to keep the firewood in proper place.
There is beautiful garden in front of the trust. It was maintained and cared by the
members of the trust itself. The water to the garden was taken from the jalanidhi pipeline.

Goods and food items arrived at the trust once a week in a container. Usually members
and staff and trust unload them. But during the period of our service time there, it was our
pleasure to unload the goods and keeps it in the go down nearby trust.
There is nobody to enhance their extracurricular activities. Some of them are
good cricket players. They used to watch cricket in TV. Understanding their passion for
cricket and other sports items .We purchased a new cricket kit and played cricket with
them. It was just starting. More and more members should interested in playing cricket.
We taught them the basics of cricket. Other sports items such as badminton, volleyball
were also played with them. The trust members thus find a new way to spend their time.
This helped them a lot to improve their interaction with other members of the trust as well
as improving their physical and mental health.

3.6 Stage 6 (7-07-2017)
That was the last day of our social service. And we decided to celebrate some
beautiful and memorable moments with them. Our celebration starts with a prayer. And
after that, the members in trust including the staffs sang a song for us. That was a
wonderful treat. Also we distributed cake and sweets to them. At that time we saw the
happiness in their eyes, which fulfil our mind. We will cherish it in memory for ever.
Also we gave dresses for them. One of the members in that family requests us to sing a
song. And we sang a song for them. At that time some of them were dancing and singing
with us. At the end of the celebration, the managing trustee, Mr. Jose Antony delivered
thank for us. Also we conveyed our gratitude to them, to understand their life and to be
with them for some days. We departed back from Shanthi Bhavan on 7 July with great
memories of our service and team.

CONCLUSION
Those 15 days were like 15 gold coins for each of us. We would treasure those moments
for the later life. The experience we gained there each day was indeed more than that
could be taught in classes or seminars. Our perspective about the life of ourselves and
others was completely changed. As we say goodbye we were experiencing something on
our mind, a satisfaction of doing something good for our brothers and sisters for our
society and indeed for ourselves. We learned a lot from them, and we consider it a sour
pleasure working for them. Their blessing and those little smiles that burden on their lips
were the greatest rewards we could take back.

Currently, there are no formal qualifications or training to practice as a social care assistant, care worker, social care assistant or career, but mostly ancillary staffs are accountable to a qualified member of staff, such as a social worker. We all arrived there at about 10 am. The staff and director of the trust and some priests from nearby churches were welcomed us. We entered into that big family, like some new members. The priests were come there to conduct the prayer programmes and motivation classes. Since that was the first day we need to know about the each person in that family including staffs. Those persons in that trust were from different parts of the country such as: some are from Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Mumbai and also from Kerala itself. There were 90 people in that trust. That trust provides the help for homeless and mentally retarded or sick people, who were wandering alone on the public areas such as road sides, bus stands, railway station etc. While we were interacting with each person a new experience is learned from them. Not all persons are mentally sick, some are persons with good knowledge and others were retrieved from the mental problems but they did not have a home to go, hats why they were still there. But they are not at all sad. They continue their life with prayers, meditation and the staffs provides a very good caring for them. The members really satisfied with that, which was revealed from their interactions. Right time medicine, prayer, caring etc. Bring Back them to the normal life. With the assistance of the staff we continued the interaction with them. Some were interested to talk to us but some were not interested as well. Because they were very reserved personalities. But we tried to talk them and know them. It was a great experience to interact with them and to learn different life experiences from the most experienced persons. • 16. KITS SOCIAL SERVICE REPORT 12 DEPT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING CHAPTER 4 CONCLUSION Those 15 days were like 15 gold coins for each of us. We would treasure those moments for the later life. The experience we gained there each day was indeed more than that could be taught in classes or seminars. Our perspective about the life of ourselves and others was completely changed. As we say goodbye we were experiencing something on our mind, a satisfaction of doing something good for our brothers and sisters for our society and indeed for ourselves. We learned a lot from them, and we consider it a sour pleasure working for them. Their blessing and those little smiles that burden on their lips were the greatest rewards we could take back.
