The document summarizes the history and development of the railroad in San Angelo, Texas. It discusses how the railroad was first established in 1888 and became an important shipping center in the 1920s. By the 1980s, freight operations ceased but were later revived. The city and railroad operator have worked to replace deteriorated railroad crossings and upgrade the existing rail line to improve safety, operations, and economic development opportunities by increasing rail access for local industries. Funding from government grants and partnerships with other entities have supported rehabilitation efforts to restore the railroad.
The Ports-ta-Plains Alliance focus continues to be the improvement of our
infrastructure and economic growth throughout our region. In 2011 we saw
successes on many fronts. We have worked closely with the Texas Department of
Transportation to identify more than $225 million in projects along t he corridor that
can be constructed with Proposition 12 bond funds. The Texas Transportation
Commission approved those funds September of 2011, and we will see construction
on many of these important projects beginning this summer. These dollars are in
addition to the hundreds of millions of dollars in projects currently under
construction throughout the corridor.

The Third Crossing Society contends that there ought to be a third crossing corridor, to serve the British Columbia population who live between the northern resource belt and the heavily populated southern regions — not to mention others who travel mid-province.

Together with local stakeholders and professional consultants, the municipalities of Belmont, Cramerton, and McAdenville are working to improve the quality of an important corridor that links the communities of eastern Gaston County and the greater Charlotte region. In studying the Past and evaluating the Present, we can create an informed and exciting vision of the Future role of Wilkinson Boulevard, one that continues to serve current and projected traffic needs while also encouraging new opportunities for residents and travelers.
