Advantages And Disadvantages Of Lpc Decoders
An attractive alternative to LDPC1 codes are polar codes, discovered by Arikan2, which feature a
highly structured encoder and decoder that asymptotically achieve capacity on discrete memory less
channels. Additionally, they possess the desirable properties of universal rate adaptability, explicit
construction and reconfigurability. As a result, they naturally demand further exploration for the
long block length throughput limited magnetic1recording channel. A typical detector architecture
in magnetic recording channel relies on the turbo equalization3 principle that iteratively exchanges
soft information between a channel detector and an error control decoder.
To make polar codes feasible for such an iterative receiver, we need a decoder ... Show more content

By using SCAN decoder algorithm7 the transition from the hard output SC decoder to the soft
output SCAN decoder is performed. The SCAN decoder in this form requires as many memory
elements as the BP decoder does. To reduce this huge storage requirement we are using another
algorithm that is memory efficient8 SCAN decoder. From Fig 2: In this example9, memory
elements required to store B with corresponding П† displayed next to a particular BО»(П†). In any
iteration, the SCAN decoder does not need {BО»(П†) : П† is even} for the next iteration, and we
can overwrite particular BО»(0) (shown with green rectangles) at any depth О» with { BО»(П†):
П† is even, П†в‰ 0} (shown with yellow rectangles). On the other hand, the SCAN decoder
requires {BО»(П†) : П† is odd} (shown with white rectangles) for processing in the next iteration.
The SCAN decoder reuses B2(0) and B3(0) (shown with green rectangles) by overwriting them
with the values of B2(2),B3(2), B3(4),B3(6) and does not need extra memory for them. From this

Mothers And Daughters In Eudora Welty s The Joy Luck Club
Perhaps the most intriguing and interesting biographical theme that is repeated throughout the
novels is the traditional mother daughter dynamics and expectations. The importance of family and
filial respect for parents is a crucial part of East Asian culture. The family has and still is often
called the basic social unit in China(Welty 198). In Asian culture children are required to be
obedient and respectful in all cases to their parents (Welty 253). Motherand daughter relationships
are an especially intriguing dynamic because in the traditional cultures, women were often second
class and did not retain much respect. This idea is explored in The Joy Luck Club as Ying ying St.
Clair says I know this because I was raised the Chinese way:... Show more content on

Daughters saw their mothers to be lost in the past. When Thanh is unable to adjust to the
American way of life Mai thinks, But somehow at that moment, my mother imperfect and unable
to adjust, died in my mind (Cao 70). This separation often contributed to the feelings of being
lost and unable to live in harmony. Ying ying St. Clair in The Joy Luck Club reiterates this idea
of separation and misunderstanding as she describes her relationship with her mother as lost,
unseen, and unheard (Tan 64). The power in the relationships between mother and daughters,
however, is strong and immigrants can overcome their differences and find restoration and
healing. Thanh describes her powerful connection with her daughter when she writes, It will
always be there, of course. Even Mai has worked her way into accepting that fact, the fact of our
connection, strong and steady like the heart s vascular valves (Cao 169). The conclusion of The
Joy Luck Club follows this theme of the unbreakable bond between mothers and daughters, even
when facing the challenges of Asian assimilation. Jing mei Woo, the daughter who is plagued the
most with her unfulfilled duties as a daughter, travels to China to meet her older Chinese sisters.
She describes, Together we look like our mother. Her same eyes, her same mouth, open in surprise
to see, at last, her long cherished wish (Tan 332).

Movies At Home Vs Movies
According to Redbox, the average person will watch 5,000 movies in his or her lifetime (Smith).
I believe the reason for that is because a movie is the art of one s imagination coming to life on a
screen. The two most common places to see these masterpieces are either in someone s home or a
movie theater. Depending on the person, where they watch a movie can change their opinion on the
filmitself. A movie theaterand a home can have similarities, but when people decide where to see a
movie, the decision is based on differences such as costs, comfort, and immersiveness.
For the most part, the cost of a movie is one of the main deciding factors on if a person wants to
see a movie in a theater or rent it. Some people enjoy staying at home to watch a movie. Renting
a movie may be the best option depending on who the person is. It may only cost around three to
five dollars to rent a movie. This can help save the viewer some money as when renting a movie,
you only have to pay for it once rather than a certain number of tickets for the entire group. Along
with renting a movie, someone who is watching a movie at home may only have to pay one to ten
dollars to feed the group. On the other hand, some people enjoy the theater. At Cinema West, a local
movie theater, a ticket can cost anywhere from eight to ten dollars depending on the movie. Along
with getting into the show, snacks are a common item for moviegoers to buy. Food from an AMC
theater can cost anywhere from three to twenty

My Personal Experience Of Hearing (GPA)
The final statement of page 4 in the notice was wrong. During the hearing I said I had been
taking 3 classes during this summer term; one was only 5 weeks long so it was over and now I
had 2 that I was finishing for the term. This alone shows things I said in testimony weren t
thoroughly listened to in determining my case or making a decision. If you hear the recording
of the hearing he mentions me having a 3.75 GPA, not only do I not know where he got this
information I had a 1.5 GPA for the term prior to this summer of 2015. I have a 2.66 GPA as of the

memory has holes to this day about bits and pieces of the accident. I do know that I also was in
shock from the accident and didn t care about my head or back pain and only cared about my
girlfriend I could hear in the next room in agony. When the nurse/doctor said that he thought I
was okay because I could talk and they could do and MRI or CT but it probably would be a
waste of time and could take hours before I would be released to see her. I jumped at the chance
to skip the tests to see my girl. I had no idea that I could have problems show up later. This was
not a bright idea on my part but I didn t know how a TBI could manifest later etc. as it did.
14FEB15 I started having severe mental issues. This is 9 days after the auto accident and cannot
be compared to my E.R. visit. If you Google TBI symptoms, you can see that it can take days for
them to show, like the concentration, attention etc. However the judge wrapped this up same
paragraph as the E.R. visit, which is not fair, or considering the later documentation. It was 4

Society s Current Structure Of Masculinity
Society s current structure of masculinity is unforgiving in form. It cuts out other forms of
masculinity, it physically and mentally demanding, and its ill effects extend far beyond the men
it infuses itself in. Yet what would we do if we were given other options for masculinity, ones that
allowed for unique blends of attitudes and perceptions? Looking in to the lives of homeless men
we can see the forced strategies which create new masculine codes created for the adaption against
patriarchal pressures. They are made out of survival need to circumnavigate the painful mental and
physical reality that is only made worse by harsh masculine standards. Yet these new masculinities
hold out a form of hopefulness for society. They offer up new discussion to what it means to be a
man, the potential for change, and what we can expect from changes in maleidentity over time.
Using what we learn from the disadvantaged, we can hope to improve the lives of people, although
the process will take time, effort, and careful mediation. Timothy Nonn s Hitting Bottom:
Homelessness, Poverty, and Masculinitytouches on the complicated issues homeless men face,
especially in terms of adapting to pressures of hegemonic masculinity. The mental and physical
stress of homelessness for men stems from a denial of identity due to the rigid construction of
maleness. Homeless men lose their connection to the same power other men come to expect, they
lose their place in society, and because of the way our

A Happier Tomorrow in Today Will Be a Quiet Day Essay
A Happier Tomorrow in Today Will Be a Quiet Day
In the story Today Will Be a Quiet Day written by Amy Hempel, one may be inclined to believe
that there is a tone of depression or sadness among the father and the two children. This is shown
in the opening sentence, while the three are stalled in traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge. The boy
states, I think if the quake hit now the bridge would collapse and the ramps would be left (Hempel
1202). We also learn that the boy had a best friend who committed suicide about a year before.
Finally, the fact that a mother is not mentioned leaves the reader with a suspicion that the parents
may be divorced, separated, or even worse, the mother may be deceased. Even though these

This is shown throughout the car ride when the boy and girl are telling jokes, and the boy constantly
recites humorous bumper stickers. Another example of the father s attempt to have fun with his
children is his initial plan to attend the arm wrestling tournament. This is shot down by the
children, but they still find an interesting place to have a nice lunch. The day proved to be a fun
and relaxing day for the family, and hinted that less disastrous times are in store for them.
Next, the fact that the daughter has just received her driver s license is a step towards happier
times. Driving on her own is probably one of the most exciting times of her life, and she makes it
known to her family that she received the highest grade in the class. The father trusts her and lets
her drive all the way home, which raises her confidence and shows the trusting relationship
between the father and daughter. Another example which shows happier times coming to the
family is when the father tells the children that he has both good and bad news. He goes on to ask
which would the children prefer to hear first. The daughter immediately answers that she wishes to
hear the bad first. This is surprising to her father, but it shows that she is beginning to mature. The
father is glad to hear that the daughter can handle the bad news, when earlier the truth had to be
hidden from her, like the death of the dog. This shows how naive the daughter was in her younger
years, and now that she has

The Supernatural In Elizabeth Bowen s The Demon Lover
With a close examination of Elizabeth Bowen s suspenseful short story, The Demon Lover, I
notice a much more frightening element present in the narrative than what appears to be the
supernatural as this British author highlights her central notion that those who endure abusive
relationships, sustain psychologically scars that may never go away. Although some readers
may believe that Mrs. Drover s former fiancГ©, K., who had gone to battle in the Great War
never to return, may be fulfilling his promise to be with [her] . . . sooner or later (Bowen 145), I
contend that the Mrs. Drover s paranormal experience is more likely a psychological breakdown,
suffered by an abused woman, perhaps brought on by the macrocosm of the world... Show more

After reading the letter which foresees the arrival of her phantom lover at the hour arranged , Mrs.
Drover with heighten apprehension goes to her locked chest and unlatches it, throws up the lid ,
and searches perhaps metaphorically for the answer or the cause of her deteriorating mental state
(Bowen 144). Using a flashback, Bowen unlocks the secrets of the protagonist s tortured psyche,
as she recalls herself as a young girl talking with a soldier about to leave for war in the garden
that once existed outside of the house. Imagery pervades her memories, as the uniformed man
presses her hand, without kindness and painfully to one of his button on his jacket, as he
promises to be with her sooner or later (Bowen 145), more of a threat than an assurance. Later,
her mother would tell her that he never considered [her]. He was set on [her], that was what it was
not love (146). Even after the fiancГ© is reported missing and assumed dead, the protagonist
remains dislocate[ed] from everything, and when she finally marries, Mrs. Drover s movements
remain circumscribed, as she dismisses thoughts that she and her husband are being watched
(Bowen 145). Clearly, whatever the abuse that the protagonist suffered, has made a lasting scar.

I believe the author of this article, Kenneth Chang did a mighty fine job. Mr. Chang presented
his information on the research that is being done at Carnegie institution of science quite well
he explained what a diamond anvil is and how it is built and shaped. He covered the experiment
which was the compression of silicon and sodium into a material that can absorb photons from
sunlight and also other experiments that were being conducted as in the compression of iron,
oxygen, and hydrogen and what they become after being compressed under high pressure by a
diamond anvil and a couple other things as well. But something I don t quite understand is, how
does the compression of materials for instance like silicon and sodium alter the formation of the
molecule, creating a different formation that allows the material do something that it wasn t able
to do before? How can you create a material that is consisting of silicon and sodium that actually
allows photons from sunlight in? To me that seems impossible. Because Silicon is a solid and a
metalloid and sodium in an alkali metal but knowing that sodium is a good conductor of energy; it
sort of makes sense why. But still to me it doesn t make sense how combining these two elements
could create a new structure that has the possibility to absorb sunlight. Within our general chemistry

Summary Of To His Coy Mistress
To his Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell, he uncovered the attempts of a man towards requesting
his sweetheart s glow and decreases of the obscure fancy woman to set down with the fair man

he could spend entire several years regarding her magnificence and her excellence; in any case,

sonnet is composed as an adoration lyric utilizing the conventional love requiem arrange
otherwise called carpe diem and is isolated into three stanzas or graceful passages. It s talked by
an anonymous man, who doesn t uncover any physical or true to life insights about himself, to an
anonymous lady, who is likewise unknown. The excellence of the dialect and the mind boggling
center around the lady s magnificence, the regard demonstrated in that, makes the sonnet very
dynamic and interesting. The man points to smooth talk as well as to awe her. To go up against the
idea of time, he utilizes scriptural references to stamp the changeless idea of reality. By utilizing a
story out of the Old Testament the picture of the immense surge that cleansed the earth as a begin
point and afterward utilized the picture that Armageddon will eventually happen at the
transformation of the Jews as an end point, the man tries to demonstrate the inconceivability of
anticipated human presence. In the meantime anyway he quietly implies toward the second more
agnostic area of the lyric. This symbolism it is fascinating in two regards; first it recommends that
physical human life has been finished by God and will be finished by him once more. In this way,

Research Paper On Betty Friedan
Betty Friedan: Women s Rights
Women have virtually the same rights as men. However, the fault needing to be recognized in
today s society is the way that women are treated. Even in simple areas, such as jobs, women are
put on the back burner. A woman is able to become a CEO of a company, nonetheless, she will
struggle twice as hard as a man would. Even as an employee, women are statistically paid less than
men are.
Betty Friedan believed that women should feel and be treated equal to men. Friedan fought for
women to embody their power and worth. She was an activist for the women s rights movement
and a founder of the National Organization for Women(NOW). Her book, The Feminine Mystique,
connected with her readers by illustrating the standards that women were put under for decades. In
the 60 s, women were viewed as nothing but maids and child bearers. Many women were hesitant
to take a stand for this taboo subject; their own rights. Friedan took initiative when everyone else
was afraid to. Betty Friedan s contribution clearly advanced the progression of women s equality.
She accomplished this by writing her famous book, giving a debatable speech, and founding the
National Organization for Women.
Betty Friedan was born in 1921 in Illinois. She attended Smith College and received her degree
in psychology. She graduated at age 21. After having her second child, she lost her job as a
reporter. She felt that her life as a house keeper was not enough for her. Friedan wanted to

Vitruvius Impact On Modern Architecture
The film proposal is for a small, artistic, Indie drama film. The movie is directed towards future
architects just like Vitruvius writing. The film would copy the message in De Architectura and tell
about the importance of Architects and what an Architect should know. It would be a movie that
professors require first year architecturestudents to watch. It would be educational and provide an
entertaining way to learn about the impact of architecture on society. 3.
The movie takes place in 12 AD Rome and in 2016 at the University of Cincinnati. 12 AD is a time
that Vitruvius would have been alive and Augustus would have been emperor. It s a time before De
Architectura was completed so that the lessons Vitruvius learns in the modern world could
influence the collection of writing. This will help preserve the modern thoughts on architecture in
classical times and push forth innovation years in advance. This plays on the fact that Vitruvius

The film plays off of this and the plot consists of convincing him to not be so conservative. We

had little significance at it s time of writing but with his new understanding on contemporary

modernize the literature I have Vitruvius apply his theories to modern times. The genre of the
original text was not a drama, but anything can be made into a narrative. To do that there is a lot of

Sir Francis Bacon And William Shakespeare
1 There are a variety of theories that suggest that Sir Francis Bacon was, in fact, William
Shakespeare. Supporters of these claims refer to Shakespeare s writing style, lack of education, and
reportedly hidden messages within his texts as some of the evidence that indicates that Bacon was
the real author of the many plays and poems attributed to Shakespeare. However, these assertions do
not conclusively substantiate the Bacon theory and only attempt to discredit the real William
Shakespeare. Therefore, Sir Francis Bacon did not write as William Shakespeare. The first theory
of Sir Francis Bacon being the true author of Shakespeare came from the author Delia Bacon no
relation. Delia Bacon was a failed novelist and school teacher. In the late 1850 s, she made the
general public aware of the Bacon theory through both an essay and book on the subject. Bacon
claimed that a comparison of Sir Francis Bacon s writings with those of Shakespeare proved that
Bacon was the true author, as she contended the writing styles were the same. As a result, she did
start the Baconian movement, which many people believe to be true. Her book, The Philosophy
of the Plays of Shakspere Unfolded, was written in 1857, and the preface of the book was written
by Nathanial Hawthorne. Hawthorne s preface never gives support or validation to Bacon s
findings. He ends his preface with the following statement, It is for the public to say whether my
countrywoman has proved her theory. In

Gifts under Muslim Law and the Requirement of Registration:
An analysis of Legal Provisions and the Case Law
Faizan I Nazar*
I. Introduction
Registration of some classes of documents is compulsorily required under the various statutes like
Transfer of Property Act, Contract Act etc. The (Jammu and Kashmir) Registration Act, Svt 1970
(1922 A.D) is a specific Legislation which under section 17 enumerates the documents which have
been compulsorily registered under the Act. The first class of document which is enumerated under
clause (a) sub section (1) of section 17 of the Registration Act (hereinafter referred as the Act ) is an
instrument of gift of immovable property . Thus as a general rule gifts relating to immovable
property must ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
V. Fakhr Jahan Begum and Others referred to Muhammadan law by Syed Ameer Ali and
approved the statement made therein that three conditions are necessary for a valid gift by a
Muslim: a) Manifestation of the wish to give on the part of donor ; b) The acceptance of the
donee , either impliedly or expressly; c) The taking of possession of the subject matter of the gift by
the donee, either actually or constructively.
According to section 129 of the Transfer of Property Act no rule of Mohamedan law shall be
affected by chapter VII of the Transfer of Property Act relating to gifts. It, therefore, follows that
an oral gift made by a Muslim is a valid gift and does not require registration, which otherwise is
not a valid gift under section 123 of the Transfer of Property Act.
In the context of sec.17 (1) (a) the pertinent question is about the applicability of the clause (a) to
written gift executed by a Muslim in the light of section 129 of the Transfer of Property Act and
the rules of Muslim law relating to gifts. The courts for a long time obscured the answer.
In Sankesula Chinna Budde Saheb v. Raja Subbamma, the Andhra Pradesh High Court, after
noticing three essentials of gift under the Muslim law, held that if a gift was reduced to writing, it

Analysis Of Society s Unrealistic Perception Of The Ideal...
Exercising for hours, starving one s self, crash diets and fixatedly recording and calculating
calories are some of the processes people go through to achieve society s perception of the
idealistic body type. Throughout history in the western culture and cultures around the world this
emphasis on the perfect body is associated with being successful, having wealth and other socially
desirable traits. Because society constructs this image that is considered to be the norm some
individuals strive at all cost to meet the bar that has been set and when they perceive they haven
fallen short dissatisfaction with their body occurs. This ideal human physique is seen in the media
and every facet of society; it is has integrated into cultures and the... Show more content on

The article steers the focus off of woman with eating disorder to highlight the findings of males in
growing numbers displaying signs of body dissatisfaction. In society woman were the stereotypical
view of an eating disorder or any harmful behavior in efforts to achieve the perfect body image but
the article presents a paradigm shift, were males are suffering just as much or even more than
females. Pope, Olivardia, Gruber, Borowiecki (1998), suggests that perhaps the perception of body
image and their disturbances are indigenous to American culture predominantly. The suggestion is
supported with evidence of a cross cultural comparison to college men in America and Austria,
American college men reported having a significantly greater dissatisfaction with themselves then
Austrian college men. Agreeably, yes American culture places a strong emphasis on body images
because television shows, magazine, dolls, actors and celebrities continuously portray the ideal
human physique but it needs to be noted that every culture has a perspective of beauty that shapes
the behaviors and minds of persons in that region, it may not be as candid as American culture but it
still exists and influences

Drag Queen Analysis
Drag queens have spent years performing for themselves and for many other people. Their shows
today are a way to express themselves and make people question what they know about gender and
sexuality. Rupp and Taylor in their book, Drag Queens at the 801 Cabaret discuss this subject in
detail, calling their performances a form of protest. They question the roles that society has put
them into, and in turn provoke their audiences to question these things, such as genderand sexuality.
This type of social protest is called subversion. Through this book, we can more specifically look
at two types of subversion that played a major role in the 801 drag queen s performances. The first,
and most obvious, is the idea of masculinityversus femininity, and how the Queens use different
techniques to break free from the traditional way of thinking about these concepts. The second is
the overt way that the Queens portray sex and sexuality, in ways that are impossible for the
audience to ignore. Both these types of subversion have an overarching theme of crossing
boundaries, whether over the division of the gender binary, or the limits of what is socially
acceptable to talk about regarding sex. Drag queens envelop the audience and take many of them
out of their comfort zone.
What it means to be feminine and masculine in our society has been drilled into each and every
one of us since birth. Men are taught to act a certain way, so as to be the breadwinners and
protectors of women. Women

Marge Piercy s Barbie Doll
Barbie Doll by Marge Piercy is a poem that highlights the difficulties that young girls, adolescents,
and woman are confronted by society. There are many interpretations of the ending of the poem.
Two of which are suicide and plastic surgery. Most people believe the child committed suicide
because of the intense pressure of trying to be the perfect image like the Barbie doll. Although the
poem has a depressing tone, the poem itself brings out legitimate points.
Barbie has been the icon for more than fifty years for all woman. At the beginning of the poem, the
unnamed girl has obtained modern toys and seems to be happy during her childhood. The girl is

Freedom of the Press Versus Right to Privacy
Freedom of the press versus right to privacy
ByRobert Skidelsky (China Daily)
Privacy has become a big issue in contemporary jurisprudence. The right to privacy is enshrined in
the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, and guaranteed by Article 8 of the European
Convention on Human Rights. But Article 8 is balanced by Article 10, which guarantees free
expression of opinion . So what right has priority when they conflict?
Under what circumstances, for example, is it right to curtail press freedom in order to protect the
right to privacy, or vice versa? The same balance is being sought between the right of citizens to
data privacy and government demands for access to personal information to fight crime, terrorism,
and so on. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A law that curtails the abuse of press power while protecting its freedom to expose the abuse of
political power would be difficult, but not impossible, to frame. The essential principle is that the
media should not be allowed to pander to the public s prurience under cover of protecting the public
interest.
What famous people indeed ordinary people, too do in private should be off limits to the media
unless they give permission for those activities to be reported, photographed, or filmed. The only
exceptions would be if a newspaper has reasonable grounds for believing that the individuals
concerned are breaking the law, or that, even if they are not breaking the law, they are behaving in
such a way as to render them unfit to perform the duties expected of them.
Thus, a pop star s consumption of illegal drugs may be reported, but not his or her sexual habits
(if they are legal). The private life of a politician may be revealed if it is expected to have
consequences for the way the country is being governed; that of a top executive of a public
company if it may affect the returns to shareholders.
This should be the only public interest defense available to a media outlet that is sued for invasion
of privacy. The media might become a bit drearier, but public life would be far healthier.

The Built Environment At The Gardens Of Versailles
A review of the built environment at the Gardens of Versailles provides a rich perspective into
the political culture during the Age of Enlightenment as one defined by the absolute rule of the
monarch. Gardens at Versailles were first built by Louis XIII; however, it was during the reign
of Louis XIV that the gardens were extensively expanded and adorned into the spectacle
Versailles is known for today. Perhaps catalyzed by a hurt ego after the construction of Fouquet s
grand Vaux le Vicomte which was suspected to have been built using embezzled crown funds1, in
1661 Louis XIV began his epic project of the gardens designed almost entirely as an expression of
his absolute power. Andres Le NГґtre, Versailles leading landscape architect, believed in the basic
conception that landscape should be more impressive than the buildings it comprehends2. With
over 800 hectares of gardens, the size of Versailles alone is quite daunting. Using forced
perspective, Le NГґtre, further extended the site in the mind s eye creating a scale incomparable to
the surrounding villages3. No doubt those who visited the gardens were filled with awe, perhaps
even fear. Versailles provided an almost urban environment, housing France s aristocracy. Though
the nobility was relatively pampered, there was no question that the king was in charge. Elaborate
terracing, for example, gave the gardens hierarchical structure symbolizing feudal society,
purposefully reinforcing the nobility s servility by literally

La Ventana De Los Cielos Essay
La Ventana de Los Cielos is a nonprofit organization where they offer a variety of activities for
children and adolescents with special needs. The mission of this facility is to promote and improve
the physical and mental functions of those with special needs. This facility has 4 different stations
where the children rotate and are able to participate in each station. Every station focuses on a
specific function such as cognition, motor skills, sensory and social skills with the goal to
enhance each function. Services offered at La Ventana include horse based activities, zoo
interaction, aqua experiences, music and arts and crafts. The standard ratio of staff to patients
is one on one. Although there are times where there might not be enough volunteers or not
enough kids that attend on a particular day, a volunteer may be left without a child or may have
to work with 2 kids. I feel that the standards of ratio of one on one is adequate because it allows
the staff to give the child full attention and are able to get the most out of that child for that
particular day. The client population at La Ventana is mostly Spanish speaking coming from a
Latin culture, although there are some who are American and only speak English. Those who
attend this facility for services age range from 2 21 years old. The majority of the kids are young
under 10 years old. I have observed that there are more males than females that attend La Ventana.

Critique Of Marx s The Capitalist
MARX Thesis: The Capitalist observes the resistance of workers against the unfair lengths of
the work day. He comments on the neglectful legislation supposedly providing workers with
freedom. Marx outlines the roles of many groups during the time period of The Factory Act
including men; children; women; lawmakers; and capitalists. Despite being a capitalist, Marx
tends to side with those of the labourers in this section. He finds the controversial idea of the
working day tedious as he goes through the stages of the Factory act in the 1800 s. Key Points:
In this section Marx addresses the dispute between the working class and the capitalists. He
identifies the roles of all classes involved, including men, women, children, lawmakers, and
capitalists. The workers are providing their labour in order to make a living and feel they should
be treated justly in doing so. Capitalists stand by the acts of hard works and maximizing profit.
They intend to exploit as much of their workers time as they can for labour purposes only. The
authority of lawmakers was also addressed in this section and their slight neglect to treat the unfair
labour laws. Marx claims the lawmakers turned a blind eye towards the capitalist s exploitation of
the workers (Marx pp. 6) This causes difficulty for the working class and their journey to justice.
Even though new Acts are constantly being made and adjusted, they are exploitable and not much
help to the working class. Marx mentions children in the

Roundup Ready Soybeans a crop system that is no tastier, no healthier, and no cheaper than the
way Soybeans have been grown in the past?
Roundup Ready Soybeans
Monsanto s Roundup Ready Soybean (RRS) is a genetically engineered variety of soybeans,
which contains gene sequences from a cauliflower mosaic virus (CMV), a petunia, and a
bacterium (Agrobacterium sp.) (Greenpeace, 1997). The two bacterial genes, in short, provide
for resistance against Roundup, resulting in a crop of soybeans that can be sprayed with
Roundup to protect it from weeds, while not injuring it. In 1996, U.S. farmers harvested about
1.2 million acres of Roundup Ready Soybeans, and although this crop represented only about 2
percent of U.S. soybeans, it will be mixed with conventional soybeans unlabeled to become part of
as much as 60 percent of all processed foods that contain some soy based ingredient (Bruno, 1997).
In the United States, most consumers are likely to have already ingested small amounts of

Similar to the majority of living organisms, bacteria are able to adapt and change depending on

Bruce Springsteen s Tunnel Of Love
Tunnel of Love is unlike any other album that Bruce Springsteen has written. This was an album
full of love songs, songs about the ups, downs, trust and loyalty that come with being in a
relationship. The Tunnel of love album is drastically different from the previous Nebraska and
Born in the U.S.A.; those two albums both talked about the struggles and hardships of the working
class, a motif that does not appear in Tunnel of Love. The beat of this album differs greatly from
that of Born in the U.S.A. this album isn t as up beat and fun, instead the album is more down beat
and sounds somewhat sad.
This album as a whole shows us that when someone doesn t understand himself/herself it can hurt
his or her relationship, and lead to unfaithfulness. Springsteen refers to marriage in the songs Walk
like a Man , Cautious Man , and Spare Parts . Cautious Man is a song about a man who enjoyed
his life of solitude and wandering, and always chose the life he was used to over love until one day
when a woman caught his attention. He fell in love, and married her soon after meeting her. Bruce
Springsteen married American model Julianne Phillips in 1985, after the release of Tunnel of
Love. On the album, many of the songs described his unhappiness in the relationship with Phillips,
and in 1989 (two years after the release of Tunnel of Love) they got a divorce. Although Bruce
Springsteen denies this, many people, including myself, believe that Cautious Man is an

Compare And Contrast Union And Confederate
Advantages of the Union and the Confederacy The Union and the Confederacy. Two different parts
of America. The North and the South. Even though it was still America, the North and South were
very different from each other in more ways than one. On paper, the Union outnumbered the South
in basically every category. Some people thought that it would be a fast war because of the paper
stats, but they were misled. The South and North had advantages in the economic, demographic,
and fields. The Economic advantages. First, advantages for the South. The textile scene was a big
part of the North s economy. So when the South didn t sell cotton to the North anymore, that hurt
the North s economy. The South s economy was based on the slave trade, livestock, and agriculture.
As long as the Confederacy was still standing, the South would continue to make money off slaves
as there were other countries that still allowed slavery and other Southern States. Now for the
North. The North s economy was hurt by no more cotton being sold to them by the South, but it did
not affect them too much. They could just buy cotton from others places like India and Egypt and

The Customs Union And The European Union
The customs union is first and foremost an essential component of the internal market of the
European Union. The customs union is a free trade area with a common external tariff. This is the
common external tariff that transforms a free trade area into a customs union. The European Union
has also developed a common trade policy with third countries which is a complement of the
customs union. The customs union is a central element of the trade policy.
The customs union and the common commercial policy are two of five exclusive competences or
federal powers of the European Union; the other three are the competition rules, monetary policy
and the conservation of marine biological resources.

outermost regions; the overseas territories and the territorial communities of France are, for
example, excluded. It also includes states and territories that are not members of the EU such as
Monaco, San Marino, Jungholtz and Mittelberg, as well as Andorra (the latter only for
manufactured products). Also part of the customs territory of the territorial sea, the inland maritime
waters and the airspace of the Member States of the European Union.
The common external tariff has replaced national tariffs (tariffs in particular); it consists of all
duties on imports into the territory of the Community of products from third countries. For certain
agricultural products the TEC has been replaced by agricultural levies. The resources come from
the TEC and agricultural levies form part of own resources and the budget of the European Union.
Community preference is to give priority to Community production with imports from third
countries to the Community, using three main instruments: customs duties, levies and export
refunds.
In principle, the TEC applies to agricultural products imported from outside the Community. But for
the agricultural products that are subject to market organizations, TEC is replaced by an
agricultural levy.
The agricultural levy allows to enforce

Name three examples of how Hitchcock s shower sequence in the film Psycho is similar to
Eisenstein s Odessa Steps Sequence in Battleship Potemkin . Explain and cite examples.
The first similarity is between the shower scene in Psycho and Odessa step in Battleship Potemkin
is the use of montage. In the Odessa step scenes, Sergei employs montage when he juxtaposes the
images of the soldiers with those of the peasants as they are walking down the stairs. In the shower
sequence, the usage of montage is depicted with the combination of subsequent shots in a short
period to make the scene appear longer, controlled, subjective, and violent.

Feminist Icon Betty Friedan Testified
On January 29th, 1970, feminist icon Betty Friedan testified before the Senate Judicial committee
to protest the appointment of Judge George Harrold Carswell to Supreme Court
Justice. With this testimony, Friedan hoped to persuade the committee to reject Carswell s
nomination. In her testimony, Friedan was clear, concise, and effective. Friedan employed many
different techniques to provide examples and backings for her assertions. Within the first few
sentences of her speech, the activist establishes credibility and states her reason for being there. As
president of the National Organization of Women, known informally as N.O.W., Betty Friedan
speaks out against the discrimination against women in the employment, education, and in all ...

Friedan also uses statistics to remind the court that 4.1 million mothers in the working force
have children under the age of six and that they comprise 38.9 percent of the nearly 10.6 million
mothers in the labor force today (Friedan). The activist continues to use evidential elements and
statistics in her testimony, stating for every mother of children who worked in 1940, ten
mothers are working today, an increase from slightly over 1.5 million to nearly 11 million
(Friedan). Friedan also makes point that a man applying for the same position would not be
denied because he was father to pre school aged children. The use factual evidence makes many
of Friedan s assertions irrefutable and provides solid backing for her case against Carswell.
However, Friedan does not just use factual evidence. The activist also appeals to emotions in her
testimony, and although this may not be the most effective tool against her targeted audience, it
does give her backing beyond the factual. Friedan asks the committee to place themselves in the
shoes of those she fights for, and asks for empathy. To paraphrase, Friedan asks them to imagine
themselves being denied for reelection, or applying for a job at a company or law firm or
university and being told they are ineligible simply because they had a child (Friedan). After
painting this picture for the committee, Friedan hits back with a question, asking then how do you

Essay on The Roman Catholic View of Marriage
The Roman Catholic View of Marriage
Lots of people, male and female, spend there childhoods dreaming about the big day. White
dresses, fresh flowers, big church and of course the rings, just to name a few of the important
things needing to be arranged. People spend months preparing the big day. The list of things to do
never ends food, clothes, guest list and reception. But how often do we stop and think about the
Christian beliefs on marriage. When did we last ask what do the rings mean? Dress mean? Vows

This is like the story in the bible of the man who asked god why through the hard the bad times of
his life were why there only one set of foot prints, this is like us we need to carry our partners in
hard times.
Christians believed that Jesus believed that separation is wrong and people should not separate
because to separate is to go against the god giving life to the family. And people who do not want
to receive the gift of life have not had a proper marriage;
man shall leave his mother and father and will be
united with his wife and the shall be one flesh..
let them not separate
this shows that Jesus believed that it was hard to separate because we are no longer one but we are
together and one flesh.
God s commandments lead Christians to a happy life in marriage. Even though Christians never
expect a happy unflawed marriage they use the 10 commandments as a guide line;
You shall not covet your neighbor s wife

and lustful way. The 10 commandments are the laws every Christian tries to obey.

Legal Laws Of The U. S. Drug Patent Laws
U.S. Drug Patent Laws Some pharmaceutical companies are feeling grief from a decline in
research slump but the issues are more serious in reference to the United States intellectual
property laws on which these same companies need to inflate their profits. Maybe the focus
should be on an idea that came about several years ago. Give drug patents a shorter term of 15
years but don t start the clock until the FDA approves the drug. Although this may sound like a
simple process, it is unlike how the system works at this time. Currently, patents shield drugs from
imitation types for up to 20 years after the drug is developed. This does not make pharmaceutical
companies happy since it can take eight years give or take after development to... Show more

A flawlessly competitive market has several different representatives selling the exact same
products. These representatives are considered to be price takers in reference to the competition.
Price takers are firms that have no market power. They simply have to take the market price as
given (Lumen, 2017). A monopoly starts when a single company sells a product that cannot be
reproduced. Microsoft is a perfect example of a company that is seen as a monopoly due to its
control of the operating systems market. Monopolistic competition involves many firms competing
against each other, but selling products that are distinctive in some way. For instance, stores that
sell different kinds of apparel; eating places or markets that sells a variety of food. You can even
think about sporting goods and alcohol. These are items that may be similar to a certain extent, but
totally different in terms of perception because of the brands, and how they are marketed. When
merchandise is unique, firms can have a mini monopoly on a certain style or a certain brand.
However, the companies that make these products have to compete with other brand names. The
term monopolistic competition captures this mixture of mini monopoly and tough competition.
Another type of competitive market is oligopoly. Oligopolistic markets are pretty much controlled
by a small amount of firms. A good example of this

Funding Higher Education For Universities
Introduction In the world of higher education today, many universities are facing tight budgets.
Funding higher education has become a major issue for institutions across the nation for various
reasons. University endowments are not what they use to be before the financial crisis in 2008
(Weisbrod Asch, 2010). State appropriations to universities are down and are not as much as they
once were in the past. With a decline in state appropriations, public institutions have been forced to
rely more on tuition revenue. Universities are now competing more than ever with each other to get
students to attend their institution so that they can receive their tuition revenue. As tuition
increases, there becomes an increase for a need of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Separately we are weak, but together we are strong. Ultimately, due to a plethora of reasons, higher
education funding has become difficult and resulted in higher tuition for students and to combat
this issue, university and business partnerships need to be created and become a major goal which
will yield benefits for both parties involved.
University Funding Issues Funding colleges and universities has become a crisis for the higher
education system in America. The higher education funding issue is not caused by one issue but
rather multiple issues like endowment losses, falling investments, declining donations, declining
state appropriations, and increased student financial aid which leads to a decreased tuition revenue
(Weisbrod Asch, 2010). Some of these funding issues create other funding issues like an increase in
tuition revenue that creates an increase in student financial aid and then decreases the tuition
revenue resulting in lower funds for the institution. Since the economic downturn in 2007 and 2008
and even before then, there has been a decline in state appropriations to public colleges and
universities (Weisbrod Asch, 2010). Colleges and universities believe that lawmakers have lost faith
and do not believe in them, which have resulted in the significant and constant loss of state
appropriations to higher education (Longanecker, 2006).

Industrial Advantage And Disadvantage Of Dc Motor
Introduction D.C Motor is used for variable speed operation because in dc motor torque and flux
that can be control independently and that is achieved by armature and field current control
respectively. D.C motor has many advantages delivering high starting torque, ease of control and
non linear performance. But due to certain disadvantage of dc machine such as mechanical
commutator and brush holder required time to time maintenance [1] .So cost of the drive
system is increases. But now D.C Motor is less used in industrial applications. Because of low
cost, better performance and the requirement of maintenance is less as compared to D.C Motor
it make the asynchronous motor advantageous in many industrial applications. SCIM are most
widely used than all the rest of the electric motor as they have all the advantages of A.C Motors
and are cheaper in cost as compared to slip ring induction motor. Because of absence of slip
rings, brush maintenance duration and cost associated with the wear and tear of brush are
minimized. Because of these advantages, the induction motor is used in element of most of the
electrical drive system for all the conditions like starting, braking, change in speed and speed
reversal. To achieve the maximum efficiency of the induction motor drive, so many techniques
are developed in the last few years. Now a day s high switching frequency converters are used for
changing the frequency, phase and amplitude of the input to an A.C. Motor can be changed, hence
the speed and motor torque can be controlled. With the help of power electronic it is possible to...

Mentally Ill And Violent Crimes
Abstract
In recent years, there has been a connection linked with individuals who are mentally ill and violent
crimes that occur within them. Mental Illness is often associated with why people commit crimes.
A person that is considered mentally ill will sometimes steer in the direction of violence. Mental
illness is a term in history that refers collectively to all mental disorders that are diagnosable.
Schizophrenia has been labeled as the most common mental disorder individuals have for the reason
to why they commit violent crimes. Schizophrenia is a very serious mental disorder in which a
person cannot think or behave normally and often experience delusions.
Keywords: Schizophrenia, Delusions, Substance Abuse, Murder, Hallucinations, Treatment
Mental Illness and Crime
Crimes are illegal acts committed by people from all walks of life, such as: rich people, poor
people, young people, old people, normal people, or mentally ill people. Many people have their
own reasons for committing crimes, but mentally ill individuals sometimes unknowingly, commit
crimes or acts of violence. The reasons and purpose of the research is to identify the most
commonly known mental disorders associated with violence and crime. It is important to research
this topic because individuals who are mentally ill and sick are more prone to commit a crime
more than the normal individual. Studies and tests should be applicable as to why this is accurate.

Hospital Acquired Infections Essay
Healthcare acquired/associated infections (HAIs) are caused by viral, bacterial, and fungal
pathogens. These are infections we can get while we are receiving medical treatment in a healthcare
facility. These infections can be serious, but are also very preventable. The most common HAIs are
central line associated bloodstream infections, nosocomial pneumonia, catheter associated urinary
tract infections, and surgical site infections. The most frequent mode of transmission of hospital
acquired infections is by direct contact. These infections are very serious and can possibly lead to
death, so prevention of these infections are extremely vital. This is why hand washing, wearing

Nosocomial pneumonia is a lung infection that can occur in patients 48 72 hours after being
admitted to a healthcare facility. This type of pneumonia occurs mostly in patients that are on a
ventilator, a machine that helps them to breathe, or patients who are critically ill and have a
compromised immune system. Hospital acquired pneumonia can also be spread by healthcare
workers, who can pass germs from their hands or clothes from person to person (direct contact) or
by droplets (coughing, sneezing, etc.). Some ways to prevent this type of infection from happening
is by placing the patient in a semi upright or upright positioning [that may] reduce the risk of
aspiration and pneumonia and noninvasive ventilation using continuous positive airway pressure
(CPAP) (Sethi, 2017). Generally, the main pathogens that cause this infection are Streptococcus
pneumoniae, Streptococcus species, Haemophilus influenzae, Enterobacter species, Escherichia
coli, Klebsiella species, Proteus species, Serratia marcescens and methicillin susceptible
Staphylococcus aureus (Rotstein et al., 2008). Antibiotic resistant bacteria are a very important
concern. Catheter associated urinary tract infections, also known as CAUTI, are the most common
type of HAI with approximately 75% [being] associated with a urinary catheter ( Catheter

  • 2. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Lpc Decoders An attractive alternative to LDPC1 codes are polar codes, discovered by Arikan2, which feature a highly structured encoder and decoder that asymptotically achieve capacity on discrete memory less channels. Additionally, they possess the desirable properties of universal rate adaptability, explicit construction and reconfigurability. As a result, they naturally demand further exploration for the long block length throughput limited magnetic1recording channel. A typical detector architecture in magnetic recording channel relies on the turbo equalization3 principle that iteratively exchanges soft information between a channel detector and an error control decoder. To make polar codes feasible for such an iterative receiver, we need a decoder ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By using SCAN decoder algorithm7 the transition from the hard output SC decoder to the soft output SCAN decoder is performed. The SCAN decoder in this form requires as many memory elements as the BP decoder does. To reduce this huge storage requirement we are using another algorithm that is memory efficient8 SCAN decoder. From Fig 2: In this example9, memory elements required to store B with corresponding П† displayed next to a particular BО»(П†). In any iteration, the SCAN decoder does not need {BО»(П†) : П† is even} for the next iteration, and we can overwrite particular BО»(0) (shown with green rectangles) at any depth О» with { BО»(П†): П† is even, П†в‰ 0} (shown with yellow rectangles). On the other hand, the SCAN decoder requires {BО»(П†) : П† is odd} (shown with white rectangles) for processing in the next iteration. The SCAN decoder reuses B2(0) and B3(0) (shown with green rectangles) by overwriting them with the values of B2(2),B3(2), B3(4),B3(6) and does not need extra memory for them. From this we save five memory ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Mothers And Daughters In Eudora Welty s The Joy Luck Club Perhaps the most intriguing and interesting biographical theme that is repeated throughout the novels is the traditional mother daughter dynamics and expectations. The importance of family and filial respect for parents is a crucial part of East Asian culture. The family has and still is often called the basic social unit in China(Welty 198). In Asian culture children are required to be obedient and respectful in all cases to their parents (Welty 253). Motherand daughter relationships are an especially intriguing dynamic because in the traditional cultures, women were often second class and did not retain much respect. This idea is explored in The Joy Luck Club as Ying ying St. Clair says I know this because I was raised the Chinese way:... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Daughters saw their mothers to be lost in the past. When Thanh is unable to adjust to the American way of life Mai thinks, But somehow at that moment, my mother imperfect and unable to adjust, died in my mind (Cao 70). This separation often contributed to the feelings of being lost and unable to live in harmony. Ying ying St. Clair in The Joy Luck Club reiterates this idea of separation and misunderstanding as she describes her relationship with her mother as lost, unseen, and unheard (Tan 64). The power in the relationships between mother and daughters, however, is strong and immigrants can overcome their differences and find restoration and healing. Thanh describes her powerful connection with her daughter when she writes, It will always be there, of course. Even Mai has worked her way into accepting that fact, the fact of our connection, strong and steady like the heart s vascular valves (Cao 169). The conclusion of The Joy Luck Club follows this theme of the unbreakable bond between mothers and daughters, even when facing the challenges of Asian assimilation. Jing mei Woo, the daughter who is plagued the most with her unfulfilled duties as a daughter, travels to China to meet her older Chinese sisters. She describes, Together we look like our mother. Her same eyes, her same mouth, open in surprise to see, at last, her long cherished wish (Tan 332). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Movies At Home Vs Movies According to Redbox, the average person will watch 5,000 movies in his or her lifetime (Smith). I believe the reason for that is because a movie is the art of one s imagination coming to life on a screen. The two most common places to see these masterpieces are either in someone s home or a movie theater. Depending on the person, where they watch a movie can change their opinion on the filmitself. A movie theaterand a home can have similarities, but when people decide where to see a movie, the decision is based on differences such as costs, comfort, and immersiveness. For the most part, the cost of a movie is one of the main deciding factors on if a person wants to see a movie in a theater or rent it. Some people enjoy staying at home to watch a movie. Renting a movie may be the best option depending on who the person is. It may only cost around three to five dollars to rent a movie. This can help save the viewer some money as when renting a movie, you only have to pay for it once rather than a certain number of tickets for the entire group. Along with renting a movie, someone who is watching a movie at home may only have to pay one to ten dollars to feed the group. On the other hand, some people enjoy the theater. At Cinema West, a local movie theater, a ticket can cost anywhere from eight to ten dollars depending on the movie. Along with getting into the show, snacks are a common item for moviegoers to buy. Food from an AMC theater can cost anywhere from three to twenty ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Society s Current Structure Of Masculinity Society s current structure of masculinity is unforgiving in form. It cuts out other forms of masculinity, it physically and mentally demanding, and its ill effects extend far beyond the men it infuses itself in. Yet what would we do if we were given other options for masculinity, ones that allowed for unique blends of attitudes and perceptions? Looking in to the lives of homeless men we can see the forced strategies which create new masculine codes created for the adaption against patriarchal pressures. They are made out of survival need to circumnavigate the painful mental and physical reality that is only made worse by harsh masculine standards. Yet these new masculinities hold out a form of hopefulness for society. They offer up new discussion to what it means to be a man, the potential for change, and what we can expect from changes in maleidentity over time. Using what we learn from the disadvantaged, we can hope to improve the lives of people, although the process will take time, effort, and careful mediation. Timothy Nonn s Hitting Bottom: Homelessness, Poverty, and Masculinitytouches on the complicated issues homeless men face, especially in terms of adapting to pressures of hegemonic masculinity. The mental and physical stress of homelessness for men stems from a denial of identity due to the rigid construction of maleness. Homeless men lose their connection to the same power other men come to expect, they lose their place in society, and because of the way our ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A Happier Tomorrow in Today Will Be a Quiet Day Essay A Happier Tomorrow in Today Will Be a Quiet Day In the story Today Will Be a Quiet Day written by Amy Hempel, one may be inclined to believe that there is a tone of depression or sadness among the father and the two children. This is shown in the opening sentence, while the three are stalled in traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge. The boy states, I think if the quake hit now the bridge would collapse and the ramps would be left (Hempel 1202). This is shown throughout the car ride when the boy and girl are telling jokes, and the boy constantly recites humorous bumper stickers. Another example of the father s attempt to have fun with his children is his initial plan to attend the arm wrestling tournament. This is shot down by the children, but they still find an interesting place to have a nice lunch. The day proved to be a fun and relaxing day for the family, and hinted that less disastrous times are in store for them. Next, the fact that the daughter has just received her driver s license is a step towards happier times. Driving on her own is probably one of the most exciting times of her life, and she makes it known to her family that she received the highest grade in the class. The father trusts her and lets her drive all the way home, which raises her confidence and shows the trusting relationship between the father and daughter. Another example which shows happier times coming to the family is when the father tells the children that he has both good and bad news. He goes on to ask which would the children prefer to hear first. The daughter immediately answers that she wishes to hear the bad first. This is surprising to her father, but it shows that she is beginning to mature. The father is glad to hear that the daughter can handle the bad news, when earlier the truth had to be hidden from her, like the death of the dog. • 11. The Supernatural In Elizabeth Bowen s The Demon Lover With a close examination of Elizabeth Bowen s suspenseful short story, The Demon Lover, I notice a much more frightening element present in the narrative than what appears to be the supernatural as this British author highlights her central notion that those who endure abusive relationships, sustain psychologically scars that may never go away. Although some readers may believe that Mrs. Drover s former fiancГ©, K., who had gone to battle in the Great War never to return, may be fulfilling his promise to be with [her] . . . sooner or later (Bowen 145), I contend that the Mrs. Drover s paranormal experience is more likely a psychological breakdown, suffered by an abused woman, perhaps brought on by the macrocosm of the world... Using a flashback, Bowen unlocks the secrets of the protagonist s tortured psyche, as she recalls herself as a young girl talking with a soldier about to leave for war in the garden that once existed outside of the house. Imagery pervades her memories, as the uniformed man presses her hand, without kindness and painfully to one of his button on his jacket, as he promises to be with her sooner or later (Bowen 145), more of a threat than an assurance. Later, her mother would tell her that he never considered [her]. He was set on [her], that was what it was not love (146). Even after the fiancГ© is reported missing and assumed dead, the protagonist remains dislocate[ed] from everything, and when she finally marries, Mrs. Drover s movements remain circumscribed, as she dismisses thoughts that she and her husband are being watched (Bowen 145). • 15. Research Paper On Betty Friedan Betty Friedan: Women s Rights Women have virtually the same rights as men. However, the fault needing to be recognized in today s society is the way that women are treated. Even in simple areas, such as jobs, women are put on the back burner. A woman is able to become a CEO of a company, nonetheless, she will struggle twice as hard as a man would. Even as an employee, women are statistically paid less than men are. Betty Friedan believed that women should feel and be treated equal to men. Friedan fought for women to embody their power and worth. She was an activist for the women s rights movement and a founder of the National Organization for Women(NOW). Her book, The Feminine Mystique, connected with her readers by illustrating the standards that women were put under for decades. In the 60 s, women were viewed as nothing but maids and child bearers. Many women were hesitant to take a stand for this taboo subject; their own rights. Friedan took initiative when everyone else was afraid to. Betty Friedan s contribution clearly advanced the progression of women s equality. She accomplished this by writing her famous book, giving a debatable speech, and founding the National Organization for Women. Betty Friedan was born in 1921 in Illinois. • 16. Vitruvius Impact On Modern Architecture The film proposal is for a small, artistic, Indie drama film. The movie is directed towards future architects just like Vitruvius writing. The film would copy the message in De Architectura and tell about the importance of Architects and what an Architect should know. It would be a movie that professors require first year architecturestudents to watch. It would be educational and provide an entertaining way to learn about the impact of architecture on society. 3. The movie takes place in 12 AD Rome and in 2016 at the University of Cincinnati. 12 AD is a time that Vitruvius would have been alive and Augustus would have been emperor. It s a time before De Architectura was completed so that the lessons Vitruvius learns in the modern world could influence the collection of writing. This will help preserve the modern thoughts on architecture in classical times and push forth innovation years in advance. This plays on the fact that Vitruvius writings were conservative at the time and his dislike of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... De architectura had little significance at it s time of writing but with his new understanding on contemporary architecture it would become very popular and not be lost for hundreds of years like it was. To modernize the literature I have Vitruvius apply his theories to modern times. The genre of the original text was not a drama, but anything can be made into a narrative. To do that there is a lot of other dialogue besides just direct quotes from Vitruvius writing. It would be a boring film to just watch a series of lectures so there needed to be entertaining elements of time travel, violence, stealing, competition, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 17. Sir Francis Bacon And William Shakespeare 1 There are a variety of theories that suggest that Sir Francis Bacon was, in fact, William Shakespeare. Supporters of these claims refer to Shakespeare s writing style, lack of education, and reportedly hidden messages within his texts as some of the evidence that indicates that Bacon was the real author of the many plays and poems attributed to Shakespeare. However, these assertions do not conclusively substantiate the Bacon theory and only attempt to discredit the real William Shakespeare. Therefore, Sir Francis Bacon did not write as William Shakespeare. The first theory of Sir Francis Bacon being the true author of Shakespeare came from the author Delia Bacon no relation. Delia Bacon was a failed novelist and school teacher. In the late 1850 s, she made the general public aware of the Bacon theory through both an essay and book on the subject. Bacon claimed that a comparison of Sir Francis Bacon s writings with those of Shakespeare proved that Bacon was the true author, as she contended the writing styles were the same. As a result, she did start the Baconian movement, which many people believe to be true. Her book, The Philosophy of the Plays of Shakspere Unfolded, was written in 1857, and the preface of the book was written by Nathanial Hawthorne. Hawthorne s preface never gives support or validation to Bacon s findings. He ends his preface with the following statement, It is for the public to say whether my countrywoman has proved her theory. Fakhr Jahan Begum and Others referred to Muhammadan law by Syed Ameer Ali and approved the statement made therein that three conditions are necessary for a valid gift by a Muslim: a) Manifestation of the wish to give on the part of donor ; b) The acceptance of the donee , either impliedly or expressly; c) The taking of possession of the subject matter of the gift by the donee, either actually or constructively. According to section 129 of the Transfer of Property Act no rule of Mohamedan law shall be affected by chapter VII of the Transfer of Property Act relating to gifts. It, therefore, follows that an oral gift made by a Muslim is a valid gift and does not require registration, which otherwise is not a valid gift under section 123 of the Transfer of Property Act. In the context of sec.17 (1) (a) the pertinent question is about the applicability of the clause (a) to written gift executed by a Muslim in the light of section 129 of the Transfer of Property Act and the rules of Muslim law relating to gifts. The courts for a long time obscured the answer. In Sankesula Chinna Budde Saheb v. Raja Subbamma, the Andhra Pradesh High Court, after noticing three essentials of gift under the Muslim law, held that if a gift was reduced to writing, it requires registration under section 17(1) (a) of the Registration Act. Exercising for hours, starving one s self, crash diets and fixatedly recording and calculating calories are some of the processes people go through to achieve society s perception of the idealistic body type. Throughout history in the western culture and cultures around the world this emphasis on the perfect body is associated with being successful, having wealth and other socially desirable traits. Because society constructs this image that is considered to be the norm some individuals strive at all cost to meet the bar that has been set and when they perceive they haven fallen short dissatisfaction with their body occurs. Pope, Olivardia, Gruber, Borowiecki (1998), suggests that perhaps the perception of body image and their disturbances are indigenous to American culture predominantly. The suggestion is supported with evidence of a cross cultural comparison to college men in America and Austria, American college men reported having a significantly greater dissatisfaction with themselves then Austrian college men. Agreeably, yes American culture places a strong emphasis on body images because television shows, magazine, dolls, actors and celebrities continuously portray the ideal human physique but it needs to be noted that every culture has a perspective of beauty that shapes the behaviors and minds of persons in that region, it may not be as candid as American culture but it still exists and influences ... • 20. Drag Queen Analysis Drag queens have spent years performing for themselves and for many other people. Their shows today are a way to express themselves and make people question what they know about gender and sexuality. Rupp and Taylor in their book, Drag Queens at the 801 Cabaret discuss this subject in detail, calling their performances a form of protest. They question the roles that society has put them into, and in turn provoke their audiences to question these things, such as genderand sexuality. This type of social protest is called subversion. Through this book, we can more specifically look at two types of subversion that played a major role in the 801 drag queen s performances. The first, and most obvious, is the idea of masculinityversus femininity, and how the Queens use different techniques to break free from the traditional way of thinking about these concepts. The second is the overt way that the Queens portray sex and sexuality, in ways that are impossible for the audience to ignore. Both these types of subversion have an overarching theme of crossing boundaries, whether over the division of the gender binary, or the limits of what is socially acceptable to talk about regarding sex. Drag queens envelop the audience and take many of them out of their comfort zone. What it means to be feminine and masculine in our society has been drilled into each and every one of us since birth. What famous people indeed ordinary people, too do in private should be off limits to the media unless they give permission for those activities to be reported, photographed, or filmed. The only exceptions would be if a newspaper has reasonable grounds for believing that the individuals concerned are breaking the law, or that, even if they are not breaking the law, they are behaving in such a way as to render them unfit to perform the duties expected of them. Thus, a pop star s consumption of illegal drugs may be reported, but not his or her sexual habits (if they are legal). The Built Environment At The Gardens Of Versailles A review of the built environment at the Gardens of Versailles provides a rich perspective into the political culture during the Age of Enlightenment as one defined by the absolute rule of the monarch. Gardens at Versailles were first built by Louis XIII; however, it was during the reign of Louis XIV that the gardens were extensively expanded and adorned into the spectacle Versailles is known for today. Perhaps catalyzed by a hurt ego after the construction of Fouquet s grand Vaux le Vicomte which was suspected to have been built using embezzled crown funds1, in 1661 Louis XIV began his epic project of the gardens designed almost entirely as an expression of his absolute power. Andres Le NГґtre, Versailles leading landscape architect, believed in the basic conception that landscape should be more impressive than the buildings it comprehends2. With over 800 hectares of gardens, the size of Versailles alone is quite daunting. Using forced perspective, Le NГґtre, further extended the site in the mind s eye creating a scale incomparable to the surrounding villages3. No doubt those who visited the gardens were filled with awe, perhaps even fear. Versailles provided an almost urban environment, housing France s aristocracy. Though the nobility was relatively pampered, there was no question that the king was in charge. Despite being a capitalist, Marx tends to side with those of the labourers in this section. He finds the controversial idea of the working day tedious as he goes through the stages of the Factory act in the 1800 s. Key Points: In this section Marx addresses the dispute between the working class and the capitalists. He identifies the roles of all classes involved, including men, women, children, lawmakers, and capitalists. The workers are providing their labour in order to make a living and feel they should be treated justly in doing so. Capitalists stand by the acts of hard works and maximizing profit. They intend to exploit as much of their workers time as they can for labour purposes only. The authority of lawmakers was also addressed in this section and their slight neglect to treat the unfair labour laws. Marx claims the lawmakers turned a blind eye towards the capitalist s exploitation of the workers (Marx pp. 6) This causes difficulty for the working class and their journey to justice. With this testimony, Friedan hoped to persuade the committee to reject Carswell s nomination. In her testimony, Friedan was clear, concise, and effective. Friedan employed many different techniques to provide examples and backings for her assertions. The activist continues to use evidential elements and statistics in her testimony, stating for every mother of children who worked in 1940, ten mothers are working today, an increase from slightly over 1.5 million to nearly 11 million (Friedan). Friedan also makes point that a man applying for the same position would not be denied because he was father to pre school aged children. The use factual evidence makes many of Friedan s assertions irrefutable and provides solid backing for her case against Carswell. However, Friedan does not just use factual evidence. The activist also appeals to emotions in her testimony, and although this may not be the most effective tool against her targeted audience, it does give her backing beyond the factual. Friedan asks the committee to place themselves in the shoes of those she fights for, and asks for empathy. To paraphrase, Friedan asks them to imagine themselves being denied for reelection, or applying for a job at a company or law firm or university and being told they are ineligible simply because they had a child (Friedan). Price takers are firms that have no market power. They simply have to take the market price as given (Lumen, 2017). A monopoly starts when a single company sells a product that cannot be reproduced. Microsoft is a perfect example of a company that is seen as a monopoly due to its control of the operating systems market. Industrial Advantage And Disadvantage Of Dc Motor Introduction D.C Motor is used for variable speed operation because in dc motor torque and flux that can be control independently and that is achieved by armature and field current control respectively. D.C motor has many advantages delivering high starting torque, ease of control and non linear performance. But due to certain disadvantage of dc machine such as mechanical commutator and brush holder required time to time maintenance [1] .So cost of the drive system is increases. But now D.C Motor is less used in industrial applications. Because of low cost, better performance and the requirement of maintenance is less as compared to D.C Motor it make the asynchronous motor advantageous in many industrial applications. SCIM are most widely used than all the rest of the electric motor as they have all the advantages of A.C Motors and are cheaper in cost as compared to slip ring induction motor. Because of absence of slip rings, brush maintenance duration and cost associated with the wear and tear of brush are minimized. Because of these advantages, the induction motor is used in element of most of the electrical drive system for all the conditions like starting, braking, change in speed and speed reversal. To achieve the maximum efficiency of the induction motor drive, so many techniques are developed in the last few years.
