In Brazil, only 23% of the population has acess
to private healthcare, and the rest of the
population has to rely on an overstretched and
underfunded public healthcare system. To
change that reality, we created the health tech
Sami. In less than two years of operation, we
have been able to achieve 12 thousand
members with this purpose - 75% of whom
did not have health insurance before.

With an innovative model that combines
technology (Sami mobile application +
interoperability) with primary care, we
reduce inefficiencies and waste in the
sector, and we deliver more medical quality.

personal health team
(doctor, nurse, coordinator)
that records all their
information:
habits,diseases or
predisposition and exams
75% of the Health Team's
appointments are online,
the customer satisfaction
index is at 92, and 90% of
contracts with Sami are
renewed.
Interoperability
Sami is a pioneer in Brazil in interoperability
with data security supported by the
exclusive HL7 FHIR, whose integration allows
the exchange of patient data between Sami
and accredited reference hospitals in São
Paulo. It makes care more efficient and has a
direct positive impact on diagnoses - which
come out faster and are more accurate -
besides allowing the plan to be cheaper.
Clinical ROI
When accessing the Sami app, the member
goes through a health questionnaire that
returns to the clinical team their clinical risk
based on self-reported responses. Patients
classified as high and medium risk are
referred to the family medicine health
team and go through the clinical activation
process, where a nurse presents the
model, the team and collects more
information.
Our data shows that the member who has clinical
activation as a first event at the operator and
performs the event in less than 60 days of plan has an
average medical cost 20% lower than those who
perform activation as a later event. This impact is
mainly observed in hospitalization and emergency room
events (the cost of the emergency room is up to 50%
lower).
In this way, to achieve the objective of increasing the population with
activation as the first event, it was necessary to reduce the time between
the start like a client and activation.
With investment in people, technology and process in the first half of 2022
compared to the second half of 2021 it was observed that time decreased
by 38%, which increased the share of the population with activation as the
first event by 10%.
This change generated monthly savings per member of R$71.57 compared
to the group that does not have activation as a first event an operating
cost of R$61.37, which generates a total monthly avoided cost of
R$40,714.38 and an ROI of 0.17.

Sami - Insurer transformation Award 2022

  • 1. Sami The healthplan evolution. Everyday health at a fair price.

Democratize access In Brazil, only 23% of the population has acess to private healthcare, and the rest of the population has to rely on an overstretched and underfunded public healthcare system. To change that reality, we created the health tech Sami. In less than two years of operation, we have been able to achieve 12 thousand members with this purpose - 75% of whom did not have health insurance before. 160 million Brazilians do not have guaranteed access to good quality health care services because they can't afford it.
  • 3. Sami Cost- effectiveness. With an innovative model that combines technology (Sami mobile application + interoperability) with primary care, we reduce inefficiencies and waste in the sector, and we deliver more medical quality.

  • 6. Patient has access to the personal health team (doctor, nurse, coordinator) that records all their information: habits,diseases or predisposition and exams
  • 7. 75% of the Health Team's appointments are online, the customer satisfaction index is at 92, and 90% of contracts with Sami are renewed.
  • 8. Interoperability Sami is a pioneer in Brazil in interoperability with data security supported by the exclusive HL7 FHIR, whose integration allows the exchange of patient data between Sami and accredited reference hospitals in São Paulo. It makes care more efficient and has a direct positive impact on diagnoses - which come out faster and are more accurate - besides allowing the plan to be cheaper.
  • 9. Clinical ROI When accessing the Sami app, the member goes through a health questionnaire that returns to the clinical team their clinical risk based on self-reported responses. Patients classified as high and medium risk are referred to the family medicine health team and go through the clinical activation process, where a nurse presents the model, the team and collects more information.
  • 10. Our data shows that the member who has clinical activation as a first event at the operator and performs the event in less than 60 days of plan has an average medical cost 20% lower than those who perform activation as a later event. This impact is mainly observed in hospitalization and emergency room events (the cost of the emergency room is up to 50% lower).
  • 11. In this way, to achieve the objective of increasing the population with activation as the first event, it was necessary to reduce the time between the start like a client and activation. With investment in people, technology and process in the first half of 2022 compared to the second half of 2021 it was observed that time decreased by 38%, which increased the share of the population with activation as the first event by 10%. This change generated monthly savings per member of R$71.57 compared to the group that does not have activation as a first event an operating cost of R$61.37, which generates a total monthly avoided cost of R$40,714.38 and an ROI of 0.17.
