Crispus Attucks was an African American man born around 1723 in Massachusetts who was a former slave. As an adult, he worked on docks and boats after escaping slavery. He became inspired by Samuel Adams to lead 50 men in protest against slavery and injustice. On March 5, 1770, during a protest in Boston, Attucks and others were shot and killed by British soldiers, making Attucks the first person to die in the American Revolutionary War. Though little is known about his early life as a slave, Attucks went on to become a symbol of courage and sacrifice in fighting for freedom and equality.
