Europeans were motivated by their Christian faith and a desire for profit to explore distant lands using new technologies. The caravel ship and tools like the astrolabe and magnetic compass enabled exploration. Prince Henry of Portugal supported exploration of Africa, leading to Portuguese trading posts and Bartholomew Diaz sailing around the southern tip of Africa in 1488. In 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed for Spain hoping to reach Asia but landed in the Americas, opening the region to European colonization. Vasco da Gama then sailed from Portugal to India in 1498, returning with valuable cargo.
