Jason Tomas, a former US Marine sergeant born in 1974, responded immediately after the 9/11 attacks by putting on his uniform and going to the rubble of the World Trade Center to help with search and rescue efforts. Along with another former Marine, Dave Karnes, he went into the collapsed building despite it being deemed too dangerous, calling out for anyone trapped below. They found two Port Authority police officers trapped 20 feet underground who were preparing to die, and pulled them to safety with just minor injuries. One of the officers had asked to radio his wife to name their unborn daughter Olivia.
