The salivary glands produce saliva, which is essential for the digestion of food and the maintenance of good oral health. There are three major pairs of salivary glands - the parotid glands located near the ears, the submandibular glands under the jaw bone, and the sublingual glands under the tongue. Together the salivary glands secrete saliva through ducts inside the mouth.
