On the engineer's first day, there was a flash and loud boom from the transmitter they were cleaning which temporarily blinded and deafened them. An investigation found a capacitor fail-safe system had failed, allowing a potentially deadly amount of energy to discharge. In response, stringent new safety measures were implemented, including double checking all power was discharged and a two-person system for work. These measures created a highly safety-conscious environment that prevented injuries over subsequent years of work.
