On 6 June, the International Union of Railways (UIC), together with various stakeholders from the rail and road sectors, road safety authorities, academia and international institutions, will gather for the 11th International Level Crossing Awareness Day. Following successful previous events in Brussels, Warsaw, Paris, Geneva, Lisbon, Istanbul, Riga, Montreal and Zagreb, this year’s event will be held in Amersfoort, Netherlands, organised jointly by UIC and ProRail, the Dutch railway infrastructure manager.

Abstract: despite rising levels of urban mobility, access to places, activities and services has become increasingly difficult, particularly for the marginalised urban poor who face long distances or unaffordable travel costs in order to reach places of employment, education or leisure. In cities where access to private travel is uncommon, mass transport systems are essential elements allowing citizens to participate in everyday activities. Following successes in Curitiba and Bogota, mass transit systems such as bus rapid transit have been implemented in many Latin American cities (Medellin, Buenos Aires, Lima), while others are implementing metro systems (Quito, Panama City, Guadalajara, Santiago de Chile). Many such systems are unevenly distributed throughout the city however, with poorer neighbourhoods often poorly connected to the city centre where the majority of jobs and opportunities are located.
In tandem, many Latin American nations have been debating rights-based approaches to tackling social inequality. Ecuador and Brazil have adopted the Right to the City concept as part of their constitutions and Mexico City is developing a similar city charter. A human rights dimension is relevant to the provision of transport systems recognising that ‘the right to mobility is universal to all human beings, and essential for the effective practical realisation of most other basic human rights’ (CEMR 2007). Despite this link, rights-based approaches to social equity have not been studied in the context of mass transport systems. My research attempts to address to what extent rights-based approaches have been, or can be, integrated into decisions about mass transport investment, through the case study of Quito and plans for a new metro line and connecting metrocable routes. This presentation would present preliminary analysis following fieldwork in early 2015.
Bio: Gayle Wootton is a trained planner with a background in ecology, environmental impacts and assessments. Before returning to full-time education in 2013 to undertake her PhD in Inclusive Urban Mobilities, she worked for ten years for organisations involved with providing environmental and sustainability advice to the land-use and transport planning systems of England and Wales. Gayle has previously worked as a Research Officer for the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), ran a £10m European-funded Regeneration Programme for the Welsh Government, and advised on strategic plans for the Countryside Council for Wales and the Environment Agency Wales. Now in the third year of her PhD, Gayle is also Chair of Planning Aid Wales, the postgraduate representative for UTSG and has teaching responsibilities on modules relating to transport economics and sustainable mobility.

The first topic will be shared mobility. This will be explored through a call for evidence and expert evidence sessions from April 2019 involving regular engagement from national, local and regional government, NGOs, business and academics from both the UK and overseas.

US Public Transportation Ridership
This presentation shows trends in US Public Transportation Ridership and the demographics of these trends. I did this presentation for my population geography class project. It was very eye opening, and I have included many important statistical facts from the US census bureau among other sources.

THE MATERA MANIFESTO
This document summarises the results of the discussions between
experts in Universal Accessibility meeting in the international event
entitled "ZERO BARRIERE - L'Accessibilità Conviene" (ZERO BARRIERS:
Accessibility for All), organised on 27 and 28 September 2014 in
Matera by Officina Rambaldi, with the active participation and
patronage of MiBACT (the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and
Activities and of Tourism, the Council of Europe and of many other
local, regional and international institutions.
The participants duly wish to:
- Reiterate the right proclaimed in Article 27.1 of the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights, 1948, which reads: “Everyone has the
right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to
enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its
benefits”;
- Underline the significance of the United Nations Convention on
the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, adopted by the General
Assembly in 2006, with special reference to Art. 30;

Sustainable transport is crucial to address the special needs of countries in special situations by establishing and promoting efficient transport systems that particularly link least developed countries (LDCs), landlocked developing countries (LLDCs) and small island developing states (SIDS) more efficiently to international markets and global supply chains. Sustainable transport systems are also critical to empower vulnerable people, including by providing rural communities with access to major roads, rail lines and public and non-motorized transport options that enable access to economic and social activities. At the same time, accessible, affordable and sustainable transport services are still lacking in many parts of the world, especially in developing countries, constraining mobility and
connectivity to regional and global transport networks. Over 1 billion people still lack access to an all-weather road and adequate transport services. Even where transport
infrastructure and systems are present, they may not provide safe, affordable, and
convenient access for all, particularly for groups in vulnerable situations such as the women, children and youth, older persons, and persons with disabilities, with the poor
often spending one fifth of their income on public transport. Deaths and injuries from
road traffic accidents continue to rise, road traffic crashes kill approximately 1.3 million
people worldwide annually, with disproportionate burden falling on the healthcare
systems and economies in developing countries. Existing transport networks can also face challenges, such as congestion, poor maintenance, and lack of resilience to disasters, extreme weather events and climate
change. It was estimated that additional spending for roads is likely to amount to 2% of
GDP in low-income developing countries to meet the SDG objectives, which do not
include other components of sustainable transport, such as railways, ports, and mass
transit. There is a need to develop and enhance multimodal transport systems that fully utilize and integrate public transport systems, rail, maritime, inland shipping, ferry, and air transport, as well as non-motorized transport such as cycling and walking. Passenger and freight transport, with different stakeholders, require differentiated policy solutions and investment models. As maritime transport accounts for over 80%, by volume, of all global freight, it is
essential to support countries with the lowest shipping connectivity. These countries often face a vicious cycle, of low trade volumes that discourage investments in transport
connectivity, and low connectivity that makes trade even more costly and uncompetitive.

This paper summarized various measures taken for safety in aviation and considered the various responsibilities assigned to different people to ensure that there is a safe flying environment. The paper tries to provide solutions to the aviation industry that are effective for the aviation industry and useful to the employees in the industry, as well as travellers and used a problem-solution analysis. The report was designed to offer viable solutions to the problems that have arisen due to the expansion of air transport. An in-depth analysis of the issues surrounding the aviation management systems as well as the individual contribution to the general operations is highly scrutinized. Weather and climatic conditions were included as part of this study as it has been linked a large number of deaths because of poor insight, which thus have led to accidents. The recommendations include that it is advisable for .

Veterans with Disabilities Toolkit
WASHINGTON, D.C., November 11, 2014—Today the Equal Rights Center (ERC)—a national non-profit civil rights organization—released a new toolkit to help veterans with disabilities advocate for accessible housing.
“Every year, hundreds of thousands of veterans return home to new challenges and barriers due to physical and mental disabilities resulting from their service to and for our country,” said Melvina Ford, executive director of the ERC. “Under the federal Fair Housing Act, these veterans are entitled to accessible housing and beyond that our gratitude and respect.”
According to government sources, 45 percent of the 1.6 million veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are now seeking compensation for service-related disabilities, more than double the estimate of 21 percent who filed such claims after the Gulf War.
The lack of available accessible housing for these veterans with disabilities contributes to higher rates of unemployment and homelessness. Approximately 12 percent of the homeless population is made up of veterans, which in real numbers amounts to almost 50,000 homeless veterans on our streets.
“Our veterans—particularly those who return home with service-related disabilities—deserve equal treatment and opportunity in all aspects of their new lives,” said James Schenck, president and CEO of Pentagon Federal Credit Union (PenFed). “It is imperative that we ensure that veterans with disabilities have the resources and education to be effective advocates for themselves and their families.”
The Veterans with Disabilities Toolkit highlights the rights to accessible housing afforded to veterans with disabilities under Title XIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, known as the Fair Housing Act (FHA). This toolkit provides: an overview of the rights provided by the federal FHA, information on accessible design requirements of multifamily development, how to request a reasonable modification or accommodation from property owners or managers and answers to frequently asked questions.

Thaker, International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Montréal, Canada (presenter) Persons with disabilities make up a significant and growing percentage of the world’s population. They have the same international rights as other citizens, and these rights apply to air travel as to all areas of life. Aviation needs to recognise and accommodate this growing passenger segment. There have been many changes in the provision of accessible facilities and services to persons with disabilities in air transportation worldwide, and this trend requires renewed attention at an international level. ICAO has adopted international standards and practices on the matter, in keeping with the general obligations of States under the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, to promote universal design, to provide accessible information, and to promote the training of professionals and staff working with persons with disabilities. An associated manual provides general guidance to assist the civil aviation community in the implementation of these standards and practices.
