Russia in 1914 was a huge country ruled by Tsar Nicholas II as an autocrat. Most Russians lived in poor conditions as peasant farmers or urban workers. Nicholas II faced growing discontent as he paid little attention to the newly created Duma parliament. When World War 1 began, Russia joined the war but its massive army was ill-equipped, poorly led, and had slow logistical support, posing problems for Russia. Nicholas II took direct command of the army himself.
