Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the modern Olympic Games in 1894 to promote international friendship. The first modern Olympics was held in Athens, Greece in 1896. Since then, the Olympics have been hosted in various cities around the world, including London in 1908, 1948 and 2012. The Olympic flag features five interlocking rings representing the five inhabited continents, and its colors were chosen because at least one appears on every country's flag. An Olympic torch relay brings the flame from Greece to the host city as a symbol of peace and friendship. Opening and closing ceremonies celebrate each host country's culture and mark the beginning and end of the Olympic Games.
