Pierre De Coubertin is considered the father of the modern Olympics. He started the International Olympic Committee in 1894 to promote international cooperation and goodwill. De Coubertin created the Olympic symbols of the flag and five interlocking rings. He also encouraged ceremonies and pageantry at the Games. London is hosting the 2012 Summer Olympics, having previously hosted in 1908, 1948, and 1944.
