Employee Training and Development Programs in Risk
Management
Introduction
Risk is an inherent aspect that is found in each organization
including the health care facilities. There is need to ensure that
risk is managed in the health care facilities to facilitates them in
achieving ethical and legal responsibilities that are stipulated by
the organization and other health or safety organization. Health
organization that manages their risk can achieve effective
competitive advantages in the market.
Summary of risk management plan
Employee Training and Development Programs in Risk
Management is the type plan that I selected within a setting of a
health care facility. In each organization there are some changes
and development or growth that are incorporated which are
directly facilitated by effective training and development
programs to be effective. Employee Training and Development
Programs is one of the fundamental programs that is mostly
utilized by health organization to manage their risk effectively.
This program is more focused to the employee and change
within the organization. New employees are also subjected to
training and development to properly inaugurate them to the
respective roles in the health facility. The employee in general
are the specific audience that the program aims to enlighten in
the process of risk management (Anderson & Mapp, 1996). This
program is very important aspect in risk management process in
every organization that is undergoing any changes thence the
motive for my selection.
Steps of risk management in health facilities
Risk management in healthcare is facilitated by corporations
that are sensible of the fact that healthcare interface poses peril.
Organizations aggressively trailing risk management are hence a
step advanced in the hierarchy in guaranteeing wellbeing of
services and endeavoring for superiority of care as compared to
the establishments that do not have it (McIlroy, Kees &
Kalscheuer, 1996). There are five major steps that health care
facilities utilize in managing their risk and they include;
· Step 1: Create the context- this involve identification of
highly sensitive areas in the health facility that may require risk
management like ICU, operation room, emergency room, and
coronary care units.
· Step 2: Identify risks- entails the time the management of the
health facilities are aware of the risk in the organization.
· Step 3: Analyze risks- this will entail the development of
proper understanding about the risk. For instance, the level of
risk, probable causes, and existing measures.
· Step 4: Evaluate risks- determining whether the risk need
intervention and the development of effective intervention or
strategy for the risk.
· Step 5: Treat/Manage Risks- this includes the treatment of the
risk and control measures that are developed to monitor the risk
in the long run.
Health care risk management need adequate measures or
strategies as this aspect entails the life of the people in the
society. Development of effective risk management plan in the
health facilities will prevent physician and other involved
parties from error which may lead to legal issues. In my risk
evaluation program Total Quality Management (TQM) need to
be include as this will assist employees or team in continuously
improve their capacity to offer on demand products and services
that clients will find of specific value. Total Quality
management is facilitated towards preventing or managing
potential risks that the health facility is prone to face. Regular
training and educational development programs are very
important in ensuring effective communication, ethical practice,
and effectiveness of service delivery to the patient. As
compared to the provided steps of risk management in the health
care facilities this approach will assist in ensuring the practice
of employee training is incorporated as a culture hence
sustained for the best interest of the employee and the patient at
large.
Key agencies and organizations that regulate the administration
of safe health care
There are several agencies that are established to monitor health
care sector and provision of services to ensure the safety of the
public. Also, this institutions or bodies are responsible in
regulating health care facilities towards the achievement of
effective risk management plan in the respective circumstances.
This agency may include Occupational Safety and Health
Administration (OSHA), Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act (HIPAA), Agency for Healthcare Research
and Quality (AHRQ), Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA) was developed to ensure that every person that is
employed is under a safe and healthful working condition. The
main role of OSHA is to make workplaces safe and thenceforth
they are having a role to ensuring that they regulate risk
management program in the health facilities (McIlroy, Kees &
Kalscheuer, 1996). They provide regulations that health care
risk management program is developed observing safety.
HIPAA is another agency that works to lessening the costs
while safeguarding patients and providing better medical care.
They are also responsible in ensuring that the risk management
programs are developed to facilitate the security and better
healthcare provision to the patient and employee as well.
HIPAA goal is to safeguard patient privacy in health-care
surroundings hence in the development of a given risk
management project the organization needs to ensure these
policies are met effectively. On the other hand,Agency for
Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is an agency that is
established under the U.S. Department of Health & Human
Services (HHS) with the aim of regulating the research,
addressing patient safety and reduction of cost in the health
facilities. They play a significant role in risk management
programs development by ensuring that the provided regulations
are observed and adhered to within the organization to avoid
any legal issues. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) is agency that examines the public health and warns in
case of any probable threats from infectious diseases. This
agency is vital in risk management programs development in
health facilities as they notify and enforce the health
organization to comply with the warning hence saving or
protecting the public. Also, the environmental protection agency
(EPA) was developed by the congress to facilitate the provision
and protection of human health and the environment (Brown,
2002). The agency ensures that risk management programs in
the health sector and other sectors are developed in respect of
protection of human health and the environment.
Compliance with American Society of Healthcare Risk
Management
American Society of Healthcare Risk Management is a
professional membership group derived from American hospital
association (AHA) with more than six thousand members from
diverse fields including healthcare, insurance, and law among
other related fields. ASHRM encourages operative and inventive
risk management policies and specialized leadership through
learning, networking credit, advocacy, publications, and
communications with leading health care establishments and
government organizations. The agency or body aims at
providing effective and safe patient practices, reduction of costs
and generally ensuring development of safe working
environment (Brown, 2002).
Employee Training and Development Programs as selected is a
risk management programs that is developed in the healthcare
organization to facilitates reduction of cost in operation due to
enlightened employees, development of safety standards and
generally adhering to the provided regulations to provide safety
to the public. The aim of this employee training and
development program is to ensure that the employee is
enlightened and motivated enough within the healthcare
facilities to maintain proper practices that will facilitate safety
of the worker and patient as well. The other objective of the
employee training and development program is to ensure that
there is effective communication and exchange of ideas which
are in line with the ASHRM regulation or objectives that is all
aimed at ensuring safety in the place of work and the public at
large (Brown, 2002).
Some of the recommendations that I will incorporate in the
employee training and development program for the health care
organization may include development of strategies that will
facilitate flexibility of the working time to create time for more
training and education of the employees. This will in turn
increase or improve the effectiveness of the services and
facilitate security. Also, the increased time for training can
bring more enlightening to the way the organization is supposed
to comply to some the regulations provided by ASHRM. Also,
development of clear policies and regulations within the
training and educational programs will enable the employee and
the team responsible to stay by the stipulated rules which will
in the long run facilitate effectiveness.
