Rumtek Monastery in Sikkim, India is an important religious site for the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. It was originally built in 1730 but destroyed by fire, and the current monastery was reconstructed between 1962-1966 under the guidance of the 16th Karmapa. The spectacular monastery complex consists of a main prayer hall, monks' quarters, a monastic college, and shrines decorated with murals, paintings, and statues. It attracts pilgrims and tourists interested in Himalayan culture and Buddhism.
