The ruminant stomach has multiple chambers that allow for the rechewing and breakdown of cellulose. The first chamber, the rumen, is where fermentation occurs. Following the rumen are three additional chambers that further digest food before it reaches the small intestine.

Absorption
The small intestine absorbs nutrients through different mechanisms: it actively transports monosaccharides and amino acids, uses facilitated diffusion for monosaccharides and amino acids, absorbs fat micelles and lipoproteins through simple diffusion and exocytosis, respectively.
