The Right to Information Act gives Indian citizens the right to access information from public authorities, helping ensure good governance, transparency, and a more participatory democracy. It has helped expose corruption like the diversion of food grains from poor citizens in Assam, forced disclosure of exam details from UPSC, and obtained toxicity data on GMOs from companies. While it has achieved successes, further expanding environmental RTI laws, waiving initial fees, and requiring more open meetings and spending could strengthen transparency going forward.
