Roza – Saum -
Fast
 Fasting is called Saum in Arabic.
 The word Saum means to Sop or
To Avoid.
 A fast is to abstain from eating,
drinking & avoiding all kinds of
sin.
 It is an act of Worship.
In the Light Of Quran
 “O those who believe, the Fasts have
been enjoined upon you as were
enjoined upon those before so that you
be God Fearing.” [2:183]
 “And Eat and Drink until the White
streak becomes manifest to you from
the dark streak at the crack of dawn,
then complete the fast until nightfall.”
[2:187]
Ramazan
 The Month of Ramazan is the
holiest month in the Islamic
Calendar.
 The complete Holy Qur’an was
revealed to Prophet Muhammad
(S.A.W.) during this Holy month
 Duas are easily accepted.
 In this month is the night of Qadar,
which is better than a 1000 months.
Roza
 It was bestowed on Muslims in
2nd Hijri.
 Fasting is Farz for every Muslim
in the month of Ramadan.
 It starts at Subh-e-Sadiq and
ends at Dusk [ Magrib ].
Virtues of Fasting
 Hazrat Abu Huraira (r.a) reports that the
Blessed Prophet ‫ﷺ‬said:
“All the good deeds of believers are
increased from ten to seven hundred
times except for fasting”
 Allah says; fasting is for Me and I alone
will give reward for it as I wish, since the
person has given up his food and
passions for My pleasure.
Double Joy..
There are two joys for the
fasting person:
A joy at time of breaking the fast
A second joy at the time of
meeting his Lord on the day of
Judgement.
The dreadful
Consequences of
Missing the Fast
 Hazrat Abu Huraira (R.A.) reports that
Holy Prophet ‫ﷺ‬said:
"Whoever misses a single fast of Ramadan
without an excuse or illness will never be
able to make up for it even if he fasted for
eternity.”
 This hadith shows the importance of
keeping fast because in real sense there
isn’t any other alternative.
Who must Fast?
Fasting is Obligatory on every
Adult Muslim who is
Sane
Healthy
Not travelling
Children’s Fast
 Fasting is not compulsory on a child till
he reaches the age of puberty (around
13 yrs of age).
 On reaching the age of puberty, he/she
becomes Mukallaf.
 Mukallaf – Account starts
 His Virtues and Sins are recorded since
then.
 But parents should train them to fast
from the early period so they get into the
habit of fasting.
Fast of a Travelling
Person
 When a person qualifies as a travelling
person, he has the option of keeping the
fast or postponing the fast and make up
for it on his return.
 However, if the journey is not difficult
then its much preferred to fast during a
journey.
 But.. Now a days travelling is much
easier, so a person must judge how
difficult the journey is and then decide.
Sick Person’s Fast
 If a person becomes too ill during the
month of Ramadan and finds it difficult
to keep the fast due to his illness, he is
allowed to miss the fast.
 He must make up the missed fasts after
the end of Ramadan.
 It is important to understand that a sick
person cannot miss his fast on his own
presumptions, doubts and on his own
will.

Things that Invalidate the
fast if done on Purpose
 Eat or Drink
 Vomit intentionally
 Sexual Acts
Kaffara or Qaza
 The Kaffara for each fast is
 To free a Slave OR
 To fast for 60 days OR
 To feed 60 poor to their fill
 Any one who leaves out fast purposely
has to Qaza as well as give Kaffara.
 The one who missed fast for valid
reason like sickness, traveling, etc they
must have fast days after Ramadan in
place of the ones they missed
fasting.[Qaza]
