Sony faced major financial troubles in late 2008, losing nearly $1 billion. Its TV business in particular lost money for 10 consecutive years, with accumulated deficits of over $7 billion. While Sony expects profits from its electronics sector including the PS4, analysts believe the TV division will continue to lose $3-4 billion annually. For Sony to achieve a turnaround, it needs to successfully develop new products like the iPad and social games, as simply developing newer versions of existing products will not generate sufficient profits. If Sony does not clarify its future strategy, its recovery will be difficult.
