In 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger on a racially segregated public bus, sparking the year-long boycott that helped launch the Civil Rights Movement. Parks received numerous honors for her work including the Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom and remains an iconic figure in the fight against racial segregation and discrimination.
