2. Romulus Augustus reigned from October 31st, 475
CE, until September 4th, 476 CE.
His father Orestes crowned him emperor at a young
age.
Because Romulus Augustus was so young, he was
more of a figurehead, and his father actually ruled.
After about 10 months, his
reign and the Roman
Empire ended when Odoacer
defeated him and he
was sent to live with his
extended family. After this
event, he vanishes from
historical records.
3. There were actually no accomplishments under the
rule of Romulus Augustus. This is because he was a
very young boy when crowned emperor. Also, he only
ruled for a very short time. During this time, the
Roman Empire fell, but historians say that this was not
Romulus Augustus’ fault.
4. He is known for being the last Roman Emperor of
the West.
His name holds great significance, since he was
named after the founder of Rome (Romulus) and
the first emperor of Rome (Augustus). It also
holds great irony. This
is because Romulus
founded Rome, yet
Romulus Augustus
ended the Roman
Empire.
5. He was considered by many to be
the last Roman Emperor.
Romulus Augustus was a very young boy when
he was crowned king on October 31st.
His name was eventually changed to Romulus
Augustulus, which meant “Little Augustus.”
During his reign, his father, Orestes, actually
was ruling under his name.
A German warrior Odoacer captured and
killed Orestes, but spared Romulus Augustus
since he was so young.
