Romania is located in Southeastern Europe, bordering the Black Sea between Bulgaria and Ukraine. It has a population of around 19 million people and its capital and largest city is Bucharest. Romania has a diverse landscape that includes the Carpathian and Balkan mountains, as well as forests, plains, and the Danube River. The country has a developing economy that was previously centrally planned under communist rule. Agriculture, especially wheat and corn, remains an important industry, though manufacturing and services now account for a larger share of GDP. Romania joined the European Union in 2007 and uses the euro currency.
