Zinc plays an important role in diarrhea by inhibiting fluid secretion, improving absorption of water and electrolytes, and enhancing immune response. It helps maintain the intestinal barrier and promotes healing. Studies show zinc supplementation in addition to oral rehydration therapy can reduce the duration and severity of diarrhea, as well as the inappropriate use of antimicrobials. The recommended dosage for treating acute diarrhea is 10-20mg daily for 10-14 days, depending on age.
