Facebook’s timeline

• Facilitating the ordering of narratives, enabling story-telling, and
serving as an archive of reflexive identity-work.
• Two frames:
     – Profiles as reflexive identity-work itself (ordering and communicating self-
         narratives)
     – Profiles as archives of identity-work, that can be reflected upon (journals/records)
Visible/invisible critical moments amidst the mundane

Int.: And what stopped you recently from using it [MySpace]
‘religiously’?

Silvia: I don't know, things just changed. My dad passed away... I got my
boyfriend and everything, who I'm still with. And I sort of just became
more family oriented. I moved on to Facebook where they all were. I
don't live with most of my sisters.
Implications

• Methodological innovation? Has participation on social network sites
produced a ‘culture of journaling’, that can re-shape the nature of
    longitudinal research?

• What are the ethics of ‘friending participants’?

• Invasiveness of Facebook (as entity/institution) doing the ordering of
narratives itself – Timeline roll-out fiascos.
