Large eddy simulation (LES) is a computational fluid dynamics technique that resolves the larger turbulent scales in the fluid flow while modeling the smaller scales. LES aims to directly simulate the larger turbulent scales while parameterizing the effects of smaller scales through a subgrid scale model. LES requires significantly more computational resources than Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) modeling but provides more detailed turbulent flow information.
The 2048 Project
International human rights and international humanitarian law both work to protect individuals from abuse. While human rights apply at any and all times, however, international humanitarian law applies only during armed conflicts. To discuss this divide, and to explore what happens when armed, non-state groups involved in conflicts challenge international law treaties, UC Berkeley law professor Kirk Boyd introduces the concepts of international human rights and international humanitarian law and explains how, in times of armed conflict, both apply in complementary ways. Boyd is the founder of the 2048 Project, an effort to draft an international framework for enforceable human rights.
To illustrate the challenge presented by non-state actors, Annyssa Bellal and Gilles Giacca from the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights (ADH), analyze the applicability of and issues related to humanitarian law in the Afghanistan conflict. They describe the Rule of Law in Armed Conflict (RULAC) project, a publicly accessible website that serves as an independent and apolitical source of information on conflicts around the world and their status with regard to international law.

Improving computer vision models at scale presentation
Rigorous improvement of an image recognition model often requires multiple iterations of eyeballing outliers, inspecting statistics of the output labels, then modifying and retraining the model. When testing data is present at the petabyte scale, the ability to seamlessly access all the images that have been assigned specific labels poses a technical challenge by itself.
Marton Balassi, Mirko Kämpf, and Jan Kunigk share a solution that automates the process of running the model on the testing data and populating an index of the labels so they become searchable. Images and labels are stored in HBase. The model is encapsulated in a PySpark program, while the images are indexed with Solr and can be accessed from a Hue dashboard.

Threaded-Execution and CPS Provide Smooth Switching Between Execution Modes
Threaded execution and continuation-passing style (CPS) allow for smooth switching between execution modes in Zag Smalltalk. Threaded execution interprets code as a sequence of addresses like bytecode but is 2.3-4.7 times faster, while CPS passes continuations explicitly like in functional languages and is 3-5 times faster than bytecode. Both approaches allow fallback to debugging. The implementation shares context and stack between modes to easily switch with proper object structures.
Exploring GitHub Actions through EGAD: An Experience Report

Garbage Collector Tuning

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
