School libraries play an important role in developing 21st century learner skills and supporting student academic achievement. Quantitative studies show positive correlations between various school library measures (e.g. staffing, collections, visits) and reading scores. Qualitative research finds students receive help from libraries to complete schoolwork, develop research skills, and pursue interests. Further research is needed to better understand the costs and infrastructure required for modern school library programs.
Lee Rainie, Director of the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project, will share findings from a new report on e-book lending at libraries. He will also discuss other research about the rise of e-books, their impact on people’s reading habits, and the way that library patrons are hoping to avail themselves of e-book borrowing. Finally, he will explore general reading trends and describe the next steps in the Project’s ongoing research about the evolving role of libraries.
Terra incognita with no GPS: A case study approach to mapping assessmentMargot
Amy Hofer & Margot Hanson. From Loex-of-the-West 2010 conference program: "We need evidence of our value to justify the library budget, gain buy-in from faculty, and please accreditors, but the process of gathering meaningful evidence can be quite a challenge. After all, were you trained to do this kind of research? Neither were we, but the Assessment Coordinator that our university hired in preparation for a WASC visit guided us through our study design. Drawing on this relationship with a neutral expert outside the library, two business librarians at Golden Gate University designed an effective learning assessment of our instruction to our school’s intensive ESL program. We’ll use the valuable lessons we learned as a starting point for small-group exploration of some real-world assessment territory."

The Value & Economic Measures of LibrariesJoe Matthews
A half-day workshop at the 10th Northumbria International
Library Conference, York England July 25, 2013. Topics discussed include performance measures, value, value of information, and the value of library information services.
In the fall of 2011, the Northern Onondaga Public Library Strategic Planning Committee invited people who live in its service district for input and feedback. We asked for help discerning what the library can do better, what it can offer that would make our libraries more useful, and which areas of service are succeeding.

Improving Institutional Repository Search Engine Visibility in Google and Goo...Patrick OBrien
At the DLF Forum in 2010 we gave a general presentation about search engine optimization for digital repositories. In that presentation we revealed some new and surprising information about Google Scholar harvesting requirements, and how they affect institutional repositories’ visibility in the GS index. We learned, for instance, that the Webmaster Inclusion Guidelines for Google Scholar cautions us to “use Dublin Core only as a last resort” for metadata tags. One reason for instruction this is that Dublin Core cannot represent publication citation information very well. We have also learned that getting indexed in Google Scholar results in higher ranking for that same item in Google’s main index. Working with OCLC, we have continued to research SEO practices for Google Scholar as well as for the main Google index, and that research has resulted in a book contract with Neal-Schumann. We also gave a similar presentation at CNI last spring: http://content.lib.utah.edu/u?/ir-main,60502. In this year’s research update we offer a solid set of practices that can be applied broadly to institutional repositories to improve the percentage of items that are indexed by Google Scholar.
Presentation from BISG's "What College Students Think: Making Information Pay for Higher Ed Publishing" Conference, held Feb 9, 2011 in NYC.
TITLE: Creating Textbooks That Are 'Student Tested and Faculty Approved
DESCRIPTION: Since its launch in 2007, 4LTR Press, a division of Cengage Learning, has demonstrated how a student-tested, faculty-approved product development approach can produce increased engagement and tremendous outcomes in the classroom. Neil Marquardt will discuss how 4LTR Press managed to break the traditional textbook publishing mold with an innovative approach to development, design, pricing, and marketing that brought a new breed of textbook to more than one million students.
Open: Decreasing Costs, Improving Access, and Increasing Quality of EducationDavid Wiley
While "open educational resources" initiatives like MIT OpenCourseWare generated media buzz during the 2000s, a new wave of initiatives is leveraging OER to dramatically decrease the cost, improve access, and increase the quality of secondary and higher education for the average student. This presentation demonstrates how "open" is shaping the field of education, and what is coming in the future.
This talk was delivered at the University of Georgia during March, 2013.
