Organizational design involves aligning various elements like strategy, business model, systems, structures, people and procedures to meet business objectives. Top management decides on goals and strategic direction through a SWOT analysis. They analyze internal strengths and weaknesses and external opportunities and threats. The choices made in setting strategy and organizational design determine organizational effectiveness. Strategic intent provides an overall goal that directs all resources, while different parts of the organization have goals that help meet the overall mission. There are two main models for formulating strategies - Porter's competitive strategies of differentiation or low cost leadership, and Miles and Snow's typology of prospector, defender, analyzer or reactor strategies.
