Dr. Jose Rizal went to Paris in 1885 to specialize in ophthalmology in order to cure his mother's eye ailment. He studied under the renowned ophthalmologist Dr. Louis Wecker and observed treatments at several hospitals. However, the high costs of living in Paris strained Rizal's finances. During his time in Paris, in addition to his medical studies, Rizal learned multiple languages and wrote literary works in French. He also helped his friend Juan Luna with paintings by posing as models.
